Minutes after meeting a coal empty in the siding at Starr, a Union Pacific Wattis, Utah to Barstow, California coal train is back on the move, whistling for the 200 North crossing in Mona on a spectacular Aug. 24, 1990 evening in Juab County, Utah.
What’s up guys? Let me start the week with the sunset from the last weeks end. Friday cloud formations were changing quite fast and this frame was capture just before the downpour hits Northerly Island. What do you think?
-- a few minutes after sunset. We had a little storm pass through last night, and another, stronger one forecast for Thursday. Unsettled weather makes for good clouds and dramatic sunsets!
Viewed on my walk out on one of the many Fiscalini Ranch trails.
Another shot from Govetts Leap for sunrise which was only 5 minutes from the hotel. The previous shot was at 120mm so easy to compare the difference of a 10x zoom ;-)
The sun rays came out nicely at f/16.
The trees in left foreground lit up nicely in the early morning sunlight!
Victor and I were hoping for the sky to go crazy with the high level cloud but there must have been too much cloud on the horizon unfortunately. Still a great a sunrise though.
Govetts Leap lookout is right at the carpark so no hiking required.
Why are the Blue Mountains blue? Wikipedia tells us
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Mountains_(New_South_Wales)
....the tinge is believed to be caused by mie scattering which occurs when incoming ultraviolet radiation is scattered by particles within the atmosphere creating a blue-greyish colour to any distant objects, including mountains and clouds. Volatile terpenoids emitted in large quantities by the abundant eucalyptus trees in the Blue Mountains may cause mie scattering and thus the blue haze for which the mountains were named...
or that we really don't know but the blue can be easily seen at 120mm.
... a few minutes after my last upload was taken (in first comment), there happend a tough, nosiy fight under a overhanging tree on the riverbank.
It went on for about 2 minutes with a lot of splashing and roaring, but it was impossible to see anything of this action because of the dense tree.
After that, there was a moment of silence and then we saw the successful hunter dragging a caiman out of the water,
finally disappearing with his hard earned breakfast in the adjoining forest.
Part 30 and last part of a series of pictures of the hard job of a Jaguar, trying to get his breakfast ...
If you want to see the previous pictures of that little story in chronological order, have a look at my Jaguar Morning-Album.
Thanks for your interest and I hope you could feel some of the thrill we experienced while watching this fantastic jaguar for such a long time.
Have a good start to the weekend!
Amtrak 8, the 'Empire Builder', is in the last few minutes of its cross-country journey, about to enter the "tunnel" at North Canal Street that leads to Chicago Union Station.
Just minutes before sunrise, I noticed a Blue heron doing something I have only witnessed a few times before. It was floating like a swan in deep waters at the mouth of Silver Glen.
As the needle fish began to break the waters surface, no doubt running from any number of predators, the heron made one quick full body movement and snatched one of them right out of the air. Normally a shore bird, it no doubt placed itself in the middle of the bass/needlefish feeding frenzy much like a grizzly stands at the top of the falls and awaits the leaping salmon.
Here he is at takeoff, heading ashore to enjoy his catch.
With only 20 minutes to spend inside the Olympic Stadium at @olympiapark in Munich, I had to make the most of the views I could find.
Wide, middle and detail shots with the @CanonUSA 17-40mm and the @TamronUSA 100-400mm lenses.
This is another medium-view image. The seating was fantastic for photographing patterns, repetition and shapes.

when one goes out with the 300mm
was not expecting such a sunset
maybe it worked out for the better
as this one just needed cropping
The crew on this U790 from Two Harbors has just informed CN customer service to notify the mine they are 30 minutes away from being spotted for loading a the giant U.S. Steel MinnTac mine at Mountain Iron.
It was so overcast and foggy at sunrise that I almost drove right by this little beauty as she was nicely perched on a fencepost only 40 feet in from the road.
I was able to quietly park behind a large bush and slowly walk back along the road and set up my tripod and shoot for 20 minutes before she flew off after something out in the field. She screeched several times in two directions and I assumed she was advertising that this was her exclusive territory. All other Snowies KEEP OUT!
We are so blessed to have these wonderful birds come back into our area year after year (less than 15 minutes from where I live).

Racing down the main at Mt Morris and passing yard job Y110, Z120 has just about covered half of its journey to Wixom with a heavy train of soybeans on the drawbar. Splitting the intermediates at Coldwater, the 2 SD50's have been in a hard pull for most of the trip and just down the road the trailing unit would cook a traction motor thus bringing the train to a stop.
Seven minutes after the delayed mixed freight and with cirrus clouds slowly building up, an old friend passed by in the form of Re 420 320 in orange, with the Friday-only empty diesel oil train from St. Gallen Haggen to Cornaux. Attikon, 01-10-2021.
The second picture from a series that I took while having a nice sunset near the sea.
It was taken near 'La Jovera (Tamarit), just aside from the trail (Carrer A) to walk from Tamarit to 'Platja de la Mora'.
It is an experiment since this shot is made up of six shots which were taken from 20:06 to 20:20, and blended as HDR.
"Your tour does not include the admission to enter Hassan II Mosque. Let's take a vote, majority rules, how many would like to enter the mosque?"
One solo hand raised; not mine!
"You have 15 minutes to look at it from the outside.", said our tour guide.
In case you wonder, his name was Mohammed. 😊
OMG, what a mistake for not voting yes once we arrived to this impressive and magnificient architecture!
15 minutes barely gave us enough time to walk from the parking lot to the front of the mosque. 😞
With so many tourists and worshippers on the ground and not knowing the layout, taking good photos would be a challenge.
Goodness gracious, so glad I was able to see the potential of the shadows from the surrounding structures. 😁
I fell behind the group, got low, waited for a clearance, and snapped this photo.
I may be petite but I could walk a mighty fast! 😉
Got to the mosque and found out it's built right next to the beautiful North Atlantic Ocean; ugh, the clock's ticking!
Nope, with a clear blue sky and harsh midday sun, there's no more magic I could pull, until I bumped into this Smiling Lady.
(Yes, I have darkened the boring blue sky a lot during post-processing.)
Most of the group spent about 25 minutes on the ground with the exception of the few of us, we needed another ~10 minutes or so.
Ooopsie, but no one gave us a mean look; phew!😅
The next stop was the hotel, so why couldn't they give us an hour here?!? 🤔
It's Eclipse Day, good luck to all; looking forward to seeing your awesome shots!
Within 15 minutes of driving, biking or walking, I can visit seven first class Bernalillo County, City of Albuquerque or City of Corrales open spaces. Los Poblanos is one of these and is well known to birders with 216 species reported in 2023 on 2,332 checklists in eBird, as of today. It’s a great place for a walking, dog walking, birding and great wildlife photography opportunities. Each year there are also several well-known and attended seasonal events and festivals.
Early Thanksgiving Day morning, out to do a quick check for cranes, geese and waterfowl and I’m not disappointed. I estimate and record over 275 geese, crane, crow and other smaller birds. The migrating Sandhill Crane is the star of the show and a coveted photograph in several world class locations across New Mexico and mostly in the Rio Grande valley.
To see a large amount of well documented information in a very interesting format about the Sandhill Crane (and all migrating birds in the USA) and most importantly their migration patterns visit this great Audubon site: Sandhill Crane - Migration Map | Bird Migration Explorer (audubon.org). It's an eye- opener.
It is getting easier and easier to be up in time for sunrise. I see that today we have a total of 9 hours 23 minutes of daylight, so the days are indeed getting short. With the short days we have cool nights, so ponds are just beginning to freeze.
Not the greatest composition with lots of pretty blank sky, but I was just getting warmed up...one of the first images taken on this morning's visit to Elk Island National Park. I will likely make it a series. Haven't checked them out yet, but I am hoping there will be some nice ones...it was a lovely morning.

Happy New Year to all my Flickr-Friends!
Anticipation mounts, just minutes to go... after three long, covid-fuelled years away, it was a great pleasure to return to London’s Royal Albert Hall this week – and what better way to celebrate than the triumphant joy of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, the Choral.
The orchestra was the Philharmonia, conducted by Toby Purser, Head of Conducting at the Royal College of Music – plus the thrilling sound of the 150-strong Crouch End Festival Chorus and the spectacular finale, Ode to Joy. Simply glorious.

This cute squirrel was sitting on the ground for many minutes and took its breakfast. It let me approach close so I was able to take a decent picture.
She stood alone in the gazebo as the sun began to sink into the earth. Water lapped at the fringes of her dress, but she didn't seem to mind.
From the outskirts I watched her for a moment, the fading light hitting her cheeks and bouncing off the dress. Why was she standing in the water? Was it to deter people from getting closer, or maybe it was something else?
A few moments had passed and I knew that if I stood there any longer I would regret it for the rest of my life. Water was not going to keep me from destiny . . .
I'm back from a trip round the island of Spitsbergen in the Svalbard Archipelago so I'll be uploading pictures from there for a while. These Polar Bears were photographed in the pack ice north of Spitsbergen which is where most Arctic seals breed and the natural habitat of Polar Bears. When we arrived one male bear was feeding on what appeared to be a dead Walrus. It had no skin but was huge, much longer than the Polar Bears. Two more bears arrived and muscled in on the food. They growled loudly at each other but there was no real aggression and all three bears enjoyed a feed. Walrus prey is unusual as Polar Bears cannot tackle an adult Walrus so I wondered if they found a dead one. These bears are both males but the third bear was a female. Incidentally this was above 80 ° North, so if you imagine the world as a clock face with the North Pole at midnight, we were less than two minutes to midnight.
