Looking down the canyon you can see a little of the floor of Death Valley and the Panamint range from the chef's window. There were two stoves and 3 gas refrigerators in the camp.

Seagulls really do love chips. On the beach a Whitianga after a dinner of fish and chips we gave some leftovers to some eager wildlife.

I wish I could claim all the credit for this but the camera was doing all the hard work!

This is one of the many abandoned mine shafts in the Skidoo area in Death Valley National Park.

………A shot from our Pembrokeshire trip a few weeks ago, this is The Blue Lagoon formed from the abandoned Slate Mine at Abereiddi. When I looked at this I was thinking Mono’ - a thought I don’t often get at the time of shooting, I normally decide at home!! Still have family up so Flicker time is limited, catch up soon, Alan:-)…….

"A person who I can depend on, one of the few that knows me better than myself sometimes, someone who I cannot be without"

An important friend of mine who I cherish. Him and Kitty are mine, I cannot nor will give them away to anyone, I need them for myself.

"Mine" he said.

"Yours" she whispered.

FIMX 4021 departs the Lhoist limestone mine in Crab Orchard, TN with the day's eastbound turn bound for the NS interchange in Rockwood. Besides the railroad's power, bits of the Southern's presence on the former Tennessee Central still survive, as evident by the old whistle board just outside the plant.

Climbing and exploring old abandoned mines in Sweden.

Yes, it's a selfie 😉Here is a link to a video from the tour down into the mine. There is about 50m SRT climbing to this level, and another 10m to the water.

I'm creating quite a backlog of work as my 365 Project draws to an end. As there unlikely to see the light of day post project I am likely to post 2+ shots per day to share some of my other recent photographs.

My visit to Magpie Mine was heralded unexpectedly by the (day after the) Supermoon which was still pretty bright. So it wasn't ideal to attempt a star shot.

But...I did anyway and here it is. This is such a cool place and I probably took 5+ shots worth posting.

The Goderich salt mine is the world's largest underground salt mine. The salt in mined 550 metres underneath Lake Huron, in Ontario, Canada.

Levant Mine and Beam Engine is a National Trust property at Trewellard, Pendeen, near St Just, Cornwall, England, UK. Its main attraction is that it has the world's only Cornish beam engine still operated by steam on its original site. There is also a visitor centre, a short underground tour, and the South West Coast Path leads to Botallack Mine, via a cliff-top footpath.

In 1919 the engine used to transport men between the different levels of the mine failed, leading to the deaths of thirty-one men. Since 2006, the area has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape.

The property is on the site of the former Levant Mine, established in 1820 and closed in 1930, where tin and copper ores were raised. The mine reached a depth of about 600 metres. It got the nickname "mine under the sea", because tunnels were driven up to 2.5 km from the cliffs under the sea. The surviving beam engine was built c. 1840 by Harvey's of Hayle.

The tin deposit in the Abbaretz region has been exploited for a very long time, since the Gallo-Roman period. But it was at the beginning of the 20th century that significant research work began by the Nantes company of West Minerals (SNMO). The main mining was carried out in the open pit on the Bois Vert site west of the village of Abbaretz from 1952. The open pit mine reached depths ranging from 40 to 70 m. During operation, the materials extracted with a mechanical shovel were transported by conveyor belts either to the north of the departmental road directly in the case of discovery rock or ore too poor in prop, or to the plant of ore processing. At the plant, the ore was crushed and ground to recover the tin. Once the latter was recovered, the treatment residues were sent to large settling areas north of the departmental road. This activity generated the Bois Vert slag heaps visible today: the conical slag heap made up of waste rock (more or less coarse materials, less loaded with metals) and the tabular slag heaps in the form of trays made up of processing residues (materials finer sand type, more loaded with metals). The recent study carried out by BRGM concludes that there is a relatively high concentration of metals in the soils (arsenic in particular) present in the residues of old ore processing activities. This area, which has given rise to mining in the past, naturally contains higher levels of metals than the average soil initially loaded with metals. This report indicates that apart from a walk along the hiking trail and on the climb to the belvedere of the conical slag heap, other uses are not compatible with the site.

Quadra Island

"From one end to the other, Quadra Island measure 37 km (23 miles) as the eagle flies. Its wide northern end, rising up in rocky bluffs and mountainous peaks, is short on roads and population, but to make up for that it has a scattering of lovely lakes and a sprawl of hiking trails. ..."

I'm not sure just what he was going after, but this gull was very vocal about claiming it for himself.

We gathered with family at my brother-in-law's & sister-in-law's "cow camp" accessed by 20 some miles of dirt roads deep in the rugged and remote Challis National Forest. There was just us, the horses and the cows, surrounded by beautiful mountains, for 1.11 seconds of eclipse totality. Having never shot an eclipse, I bracketed and changed things up but didn't work it to the point of not enjoying what was going on. Still, I was really hoping I caught the sun's red flare-ups and little diamond ring that I could see through the lens :) The cows roaming around added an interesting element by bedding down for the night as darkness fell with total eclipse! An eerie and overwhelming experience when everything went so cold, dark and still -- nothing to hear but our oohs and awes.

Rosedale lies in the centre of the North York Moors about nine miles North West of Pickering.

The iron mining and railway community came into being in the 1850's. It flourished for two or three generations but by 1929 had come to an end.

The East Mines were opened around 1859 and the ironstone was initially quarried from the hillside but soon tunnels were dug into the hillside.

At first the ironstone was transported by horse and cart from the mines to the railway at Pickering but it soon became clear that a railway of their own was needed.Plans were drawn up by the North Yorks and Cleveland Railway company to build a railway from Rosedale to the iron smelting works on the banks of the River Tees. The line was opened in March 1861
