Somewhere in South Western Ontario Canada

If you missed the train I'm on

You will know that I am gone

You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles

A hundred miles, a hundred miles,

A hundred miles, a hundred miles

You can hear the whistle blow a hundred miles

Not a shirt on my back

Not a penny to my name

And the land that I once loved is not my own

Lord I'm one, Lord I'm two,

Lord I'm three, Lord I'm four

Lord I'm five hundred miles away from home

A hundred tanks along the square

One man stands and stops them there

Someday soon the tide'll turn and I'll be free

I'll be free, I'll be free

I'll come home to my country

Someday soon the tide'll turn and I'll be free

If you missed the train I'm on

You will know that I am gone

You can hear the whistle blow a…

Taken a few years ago at 4 Mile Beach, Port Douglas

Rode through Seaside, Monterey's Fisherman's Wharf and Cannery Row, Pebble Beach and its 17-Mile Drive, and Carmel.

I called it a day and managed to find a place for the night and a hot meal in Carmel.

Embarking on a new discovery for me, Infrared photography. I’ve embraced it during the last few days in Derbyshire while looking after two of my grandchildren in Chapel en le Frith. The appeal was obvious as I love black white photography and it’s ideally suited for my dog walks in summer. Maybe the Peak District was not the right place to start this journey, the place is beautiful and I couldn’t help snapping photos wherever, whenever. Getting these photos back in LR OMG, underwhelmed was not the word. Then I came to this photo and the Lyric’s to a Cat Stevens (Yusuf Islam to the Young’uns) song came into mind… “Miles from nowhere, Guess I'll take my time Oh yeah, to reach there. Look up at the mountain, mmm I have to climb, Oh yeah, to reach there”. I guess they sum up where IR photography is forme. Do you think I'll reach there?.

(Cat Stevens, paraphrased)

Miles from nowhere

Guess I'll take my time

Oh yeah, to reach there

Look up at the mountains, mmm

I've had to climb

Oh yeah, to reach there

Lord, my body has been a good friend

But I won't need it when I reach the end

Miles from nowhere

Not a soul in sight

Oh yeah, but it's alright

I have my freedom

I can make my own rules

Oh yes, the ones that I choose

Lord, my body has been a good friend

But I won't need it when I reach the end

Miles from nowhere

Guess I'll take my time

Oh yeah, to reach there

(Update on doggie neighbor Maggie: we saw her yesterday morning, so she's still hanging in there. John corrected us on her age, she's not sixteen...she's seventeen!)

One of the things I wanted to see in our road trip is Lund where Mile 0 of Highway 101 starts/ends.

“Mile 0” of Highway 101 is located at Lund BC, at the north end of the Pacific Coastal Route (see route below) on British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast. Lund has the initial/final leg of the Pacific Coastal Highway, one of the longest highways in the world, which ends in Chile, approximately 15,202km south.

Best viewed large.

Yes, and back again :)

The Day Gas finds itself just east of Dixon, MT on the MRL 10th Sub. On this day October 26, 2024 the Day Gas had departed late from Missoula shortly after 0800, thus making the return trip back to Missoula in the middle of the afternoon. Clocking in at about 40mph MRL 4400/4406 cruises eastward with about 30 some odd miles left til Missoula.

He loves to lay on my chair in the dining room. I guess it's because it has my scent on it. Miles is almost 10 months old now.

He's a very affectionate, loving and active young cat.

I got up to do a few things and Miles took over my chair!

I held him in my lap for almost an hour when I returned.

The last time I was on this part of Monterey Highway, it was still US101, before they built the bypass...I was with my half-brother enroute to Long Beach to purchase a Detroit Deisel 271 for his first salmon trawler...(it was the slowest boat in the fleet)...got a flat tire right about here too while it was over 100*...

This dreary and colorless November afternoon had me hoping for an early Spring. The mood of that sky brought to mind some lyrics from an old Ian & Sylvia number:

"Wild geese flyin' by

Callin' on the downwind as they go

No answer they send

And springtime has too many miles to flow. . . ."

Another addition to my "Milepost" Series. This is along Highway 12 in Idaho. Highway 12 cuts accross north central Idaho connecting Washington and Montana. It's one of the most beautiful drives in the country.

Shots like this were why I was excited to come to the Midwest: being able to fit a train in excess of a mile long into a single frame. Loaded hoppers full of coal roll east on the BNSF Sand Hills Subdivision with two locomotives leading the train off in the distance, and a single GEVO shoving on the rear. The sun was directly behind me and lit up the reflective striping and headlights and glinting off the sides of the aluminum cars.

A breathtaking road stretches through the rugged landscapes of Arizona and Utah, flanked by towering red rock formations and majestic mountains. The sun casts a golden hue over the sandstone cliffs, highlighting their layered history—millions of years of geological evolution shaped by wind and water. This iconic route has long been a passage for travelers, from Native American tribes who first inhabited the land to pioneers and modern explorers seeking the untamed beauty of the American Southwest. The vast open sky, the winding asphalt cutting through the desert, and the towering mesas on either side create a scene both timeless and awe-inspiring, embodying the spirit of the Wild West.

He has the prettiest and longest eye lashes for a 4 month old. His mom's definitely jealous. In this photo his eyes apear to be turning a bit green. They normally look like a slate blue color.

It took me only about 5 hours to get to Mono Lake from Ventura County. I made a quick stop, but then straight to Mono Lake to catch the sunset (will post tomorrow). But then, because I do things in reverse order, decided to look for a campsite AFTER shooting Mono Lake at sunset. Being a weekend in the summer, the SMART thing to do, would have been to find a campsite first, and then go shoot. But I wasn’t going to lose the sunset.

So after the sunset, I went up Tioga Pass Road to find a campsite at the handful of campsites. Full. Full. Full. Full. Crap. And then I had a tip from Jeff Sullivan about a small spot near Mono Lake which is not only sandy, but somewhat legal. So I found that, set up my tent, and then headed back to Lee Vining to eat at the gourmet gas station. I had the carnitas tacos which I will dare to say were probably some of the best I’ve ever had. Sure they were $11, but WELL worth it. Probably the best food within 100 miles.

So this is my tent with the Milky Way behind it. Shot it at 30seconds at ISO 4000, lit internally by my cell phone. Drove almost 1000 miles in 3 days, including shooting a wedding with Jeff. The rest of the week will be Mono Lake, Yosemite & maybe some hot springs (as long as I keep the location confidential)

On the right is one of the few Michigan Central relics left in Chicagoland: a stone mile marker marking the 265th mile from Detroit on the mainline into Chicago. The Michigan Central paralleled the IHB up to Calumet Park where it split northwest and joined the Illinois Central at Kensington. Until 1957, New York Central's Wolverine still ran over the Michigan Central via Kensington.
