the backside of a massive meso cyclone

This astonishing supercell mesocyclone is just one frame from my new timelapse film I recently shot in Tornado Alley nofollow">weatherholidays. The film is a work in progress. I will be posting more images from the film in the coming weeks. The film will be published on my YouTube Channel.

A freebuild for Brethren of the Brick Seas on Eurobricks. Meso-American style watch tower inspired by the style of Gideon's Jungle Temple. Also I obtained one of the new Lego jaguars and desperately needed to build something to show it off! :)

A Myzec warrior takes Colonel Dirk Allcock to an overgrown watchtower on the outskirts of Myzectlan where the guards have reported frequent sightings of one of the elusive big cats prolific on Cascadia. In the early hours of the morning, Dirk finally sights one of the islands magnificent jaguars.

Well, it seems each Summer Joust the duration of build time for my first build gets longer: I started this quite a while ago, but at least it's here now. I hope you like it! I was inspired by the Aztec Game where they try to hit the ball through the stone hoops. I tried to make the ring smaller, but couldn't get that done. Also I tried to make the posing more dramatic, but couldn't do that without cheating with glue or something, which I had rather not ;) . I'm happy with it though, been a while since I had done a Meso-American MOC: or any MOC at all, for that matter!

What a day this one turned out to be. Definitely one of the top scenes of the summer for me in Arizona. I had been chasing around the Camp Verde area earlier and saw a little rotating storm, then headed north of Cottonwood to watch this one roll off the mountains. It was a bigger cell earlier but as it came over the mountains, it split into two and the left side suddenly became this brief but gorgeously sculpted mesocyclone. I was freaking out at the time and I have the entire genesis of the storm on time-lapse (which you can see in my Monsoon II film).

This was a shot with my third camera and a lightning trigger…you can make out the bolt there on the right side of the cell.

Hoping to get lucky and see more of this kind of thing next summer!

This was one of those builds that took ages and I am finally glad that it is finished. The build looks far bigger in real life, the photos make it seem quite compact!

Anyway, thanks for looking, good luck to all those competing in the Summer Joust this year and thank you once again to all the organisers!

Sometimes in Arizona you get lucky when you're out chasing and happen to stumble on a storm that not only looks pretty great from far away, but it also suddenly begins to form structure on it right before your eyes and the next thing you know, you have a bonafide mesocyclone. These are kind of a rare occurrence out here, but lately they seem to be happening more often. EIther they've always happened and no one sees them in the wide open lands of Arizona, thus an influx of storm chasers has suddenly revealed these hidden gems...or El Nino and climate change are the reasons. Or a combination of both. Either way...August 2nd south of Holbrook was amazing!

Not the most angry and intense storm ever, but this is Arizona! Such a treat to see something like this.

9 meses ya...

No te acerques a mi tumba sollozando.

No estoy allí. No duermo ahí.

No estoy allí. Yo no morí.

As the messy part of the meso started to move over my area, I was about to blast east to get out from under it, but stopped and stood outside as the storm glowed a beautiful turquoise blue. I've seen videos of storms that appeared a green/blue due to the sunlight's angle on the storm, but seeing it first hand in person was absolutely mesmerizing. Lightning was striking all around, and the hail shaft came extremely close up on the left of this photo as I snapped away. While I didn't notice it during this time, after looking back at this image I noticed a part of the storm that looked like it was producing a funnel. It's rather hard to tell due to how wide angle I was shooting, but in the center of the frame above the road, let me know what you think it might be. Scud, or a funnel cloud? Anyways, I was going to post pictures of the supercell I saw back on the beginning of October, but I came across this photo from June and thought it was much more post worthy. Hope you enjoy!

CAT:
