On the right of shot is the Mermaid Inn. It was established in the 12th century. The current building dates from 1420 the cellars built in 1156 still survive
The entire wall of the Sydney Acquarium cafe was covered with these pretty scales, that were far too big to fit any mermaids.

Apart from having minimal aesthetic merit, and being a grim east coast day, the wreckage is the remains of a beautiful, 80 foot Thames spritsail barge called Mermaid that was my home for two years. This was taken some 15 years later and I had to squelch through the mud to get to her. Last time I looked there was nothing left to be seen at all.
Mermaid was a "stackie", designed to carry vast amounts of hay to feed the horses of London. In her hey day, she'd have looked something like this

Perched gracefully on her rock by the Langelinie promenade, the Little Mermaid statue continues to captivate visitors from around the globe. Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's enduring tale, she's a beautiful tribute to love, sacrifice, and the enduring power of stories. So glad to have finally seen her in person!

Probably the most famous street in Rye is Mermaid Street. Often taken from the top of the bottom it's got some good buildings in between.
Mermaids seen here racing along the east coast of Ireland between Rush and Lambay Island. Mermaids are a very popular boat and there is an ever growing fleet of these handmade crafts racing every weekend, mainly long the east coast but also in Limerick Kerry and Cork in the South of Ireland.
Did I capture a mermaid? The story is that the mermaid myth came from sailors seeing Manatees. This isn't a Manatee.
I've always loved mermaids. (Who doesn't?!) They are beautiful and a fun concept, and the art that has been created around the myth has been terrific. This Christmas ornament was hanging in a window in St. Augustine last August. I needed something red for my photostream, and as I looked through my archives, there she was!
I can't remember exactly what area the store was in, but the geotag is an approximate, for anyone who might want to venture up to St. Augustine!
