An NS merchandise train rolls east across the flatlands of northern Indiana on NS' Ex-NYC Chicago Line between Ligonier and Brimfield.

More freight action. That's Rt 83 in the background, and before anyone asks, no, you cannot get photos from up there, the barrier you see is a tall, sound absorbing wall. Before the bridge was rebuilt there was a staircase on the east side of the bridge that was great for photos. Not any longer unfortunately!

The Merchandise Mart (currently branded as the Mart), designed by Graham, Anderson, Probst and White, was the largest building in the world at its opening in 1930. Its 4 million square feet of floor space is located at the junction of the Chicago River's branches. Built by Marshall Field & Co. and later owned for more than half a century by the Kennedy family, the Mart centralized Chicago's wholesale goods business by consolidating architectural and interior design vendors and trades under a single roof. My grandfather, a ladies’ undergarments salesman, had an office here for many years.

Unused merchandize racks sit on the sidewalk

I photographed these well-worn and utilitarian merchandise racks on a walk down a Chinatown side street last summer. It almost appeared that they had been demoted from active use to side-street storage, and that perhaps they were just waiting to be dragged away, or possibly they were being kept around long enough that they could still be pressed into service if needed.

I like trying to read (or read into) the possible history of artifacts like these. For example, they give every indication of being "home-made" by folks who don't follow construction "rules," but who have probably built such things before. The colors are wild, between the fluorescent green and the yellow, red, and blue of graffiti. I love the angle on the lower front of the rack at the left — all I can figure is that it must have been designed to match the slope of the particular San Francisco street where it was once used.

I miss this chain. Quality merchandise, good prices. Remember taking your slip to the cashier, paying, then waiting for your item(s) to come down the conveyor belt? The chain (and this store) closed in early 2002. Photo taken March 27, 2008.

Update: Still there as of June 2013!

Update: 2016: U-Haul bought the building and they're renting moving vehicles and supplies. The building is being renovated as storage units.

The Shenango Valley Mall in Hermitage, Pennsylvania... The mall was opened in the late 1960s and originally featured JCPenney, Sears, and W.T. Grant as anchor stores. The W.T. Grant store became Strouss in 1976. Strouss was later rebranded as Kaufmann's then Macy's.

Shenango Valley Mall lost both its Sears and Macy's stores on March 26, 2017. It has also lost FYE and Rue 21 since Sears and Macy's closed. These pictures were taken when Sears and Macy's were still closing.

This was originally an Albertson's. I have no idea when Service Merchandise took over or when it closed.

Former Sears department store - Closed 2009

The Randall Park Mall was opened in 1976 and was briefly the largest shopping center in the world, topping in at 2 million square feet. JCPenney, Horne's, Sears, May Company, and Higbee's were the original anchor stores. Sadly, the mall had a decline which led to its closure in 2009. Burlington Coat Factory (former Horne's), the final anchor store, closed in January 2015. The Power Sport institute and a furniture liquidation center are the only remaining businesses here. Much of the vacant space of the mall is undergoing demolition as of mid 2015.

in metro manila there is a saying, "if you can't find what you're searching for, go to divisoria". divisoria is the premier place for cheap, difficult to find merchandises. it is located in manila very close to the port area. here are some images

I just received the Disney Designer Collection Premiere Series merchandise that I ordered online when they were released last Monday, September 17, 2018. They are the notecard set, the limited edition ornament set, and the limited edition pin sets. All of these items sold out on the release day. The notecards and possibly the ornament set will be available in stores later this month.

The two pin sets have three of the Designer Princesses each, ordered by the year of their original movie's release. Set one contains Snow White, Cinderella and Ariel. Set two contains Belle, Jasmine and Tiana. They are LE 4800 and cost $24.95 each. The pins are screen printed, and are not covered by clear enamel, unlike other printed pins that I have. They are only 1.5 inches high. That is much smaller than previous Designer pins, which were to 2.5 inches high or wide, except for the 2 inch pins in the 2017 set. They are nice looking as a set next to each other, but look pathetic next to previous Designer pins, especially the ones prior to 2017. I demonstrate this by placing the various Designer Snow White pins next to each other.

A large ‘Prisioner’ merchandise badge featuring the logo of The Prisoner Appreciation Society (Six of One) www.sixofone.org.uk/ . I found this surreal image very appealing and reminds me of something from a Salvador Dali painting. The badge measures 2 1/8” in diameter (about 54mm).

‘The Prisoner’ TV series is somewhat cryptic in it’s meaning and whose symbolism can be hard to explain, but that seems to add to it’s mystery and cult status. The meaning of the penny-farthing was explained during an interview with Patrick McGoohan (who co-wrote and produced the series) and is reproduced here;

“What does the penny-farthing symbol represent?

McGoohan's only reference to it in interviews has described it as an "ironic symbol of progress" - McGoohan claimed things were going faster and faster with little reflection on whether new inventions were of benefit or not. The incongruous canopy is said to have been added to represent the "overprotective" nature of modern society, as encapsulated by the "caring" façade of the Village.” (Ref: www.web-sighted.co.uk/franks/faq2.html#q225 )

‘The Prisoner’ was a British TV series in the spy/sci-fi genre that was broadcast between September 1967 to February 1968. There were 17 episodes made which rapidly attained a cult status worldwide wherever it was shown. The series centre around ‘The Prisoner’ known as ‘Number 6’ who was played by Patrick McGoohan (1928-2009).

Thank you for reading.

Visit to Disneyland Resort, on February 16, 2014.

Visited the World of Disney Store, and bought some key chains and pins, mostly new Tinker Bell issues. They have finally restocked the Frozen Booster Pin Set after a couple of months but I didn't see the Frozen Princess Jewel (Snowflake) Pin there. The Frozen merchandise section had Mattel Anna dolls for sale, but were all out of Mattel Elsa dolls that they had last week. No Disney Store Frozen dolls at all. They finally had the Animators' Tinker Bell doll for sale. No Pirate Fairy dolls for sale except for the mini doll set.

Then in the Emporium on Main Street, I saw the Frozen Snowflake Pin. It was actually behind glass, in a display with limited edition pins, even though the Frozen pin is open edition. I was glad to see it, nevertheless.

I went to my favorite ride, the Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters, and got a good score even though my aim was off today. It was #4 high score of the day, at 1,242,900. In the LGM Command Store, I saw that they had a good supply of both the Frozen Booster Pin Set and the Frozen Snowflake pin. The latter was out in the What's New section, under a row of Tinker Bell pins.

Afterward, I ate lunch at Plaza Inn, while I browsed Flickr. I laid out my pins so I could inspect them and take a quick photo. The flower vase on the table had the usual pink carnation, and also a cute little pink heart left over from Valentine's Day.

Program Guide - go get one - Mirai is on the cover with the AX mascot MAX. I also worked with Ikkyuu-san on all the artwork you see around the halls.
