went pretty wild on this edit. I'm not sure what to think about it. All opinions are appreciated!

The Meatpacking District is a neighborhood in the New York City borough of Manhattan which runs roughly from West 14th Street south to Gansevoort Street, and from the Hudson River east to Hudson Street, although recently it is sometimes considered to have extended north to West 16th Street and east beyond Hudson Street.

The much awaited High Line opened this week - its probably the first new tourist attraction in the city of New York in well over 25 years and the people are really excited.

"The empty buildings were gutted by fires in 1971 and in 1973. The latter blaze, fueled by 70 years' worth of animal fat, burned for three weeks. Afterward, owners hired a company to demolish what was left, but after breaking three wrecking balls on the massive brick structures, Hearne Wrecking and Lumber admitted defeat.."

After the plant closed in 1971, the place was heaven for graffiti taggers, a plot of urban wilderness routinely explored by teenagers and photographers... however in the next few years, it may change that.

Meatpacking District - “AP 3851” from ex libris (2010-2012) by Emily Jacir, translation and painted mural, Alexander and Bonin Gallery, New York, 2014.

The installation ex libris (2010-2012) commemorates the approximately thirty thousand books from Palestinian homes, libraries, and institutions that were looted by Israeli authorities in 1948. Six thousand of these books are kept and catalogued at the Jewish National and University Library in Jerusalem under the designation “A.P.” (Abandoned Property). Jacir photographed these books during repeated visits to the library. Her work not only addresses the looting and destruction of books but also raises questions regarding repatriation and restitution. She also translated selections of the handwritten inscriptions from the books and exhibited them on billboards. For the New York presentation of ex libris, one of the inscriptions was painted on a 25 x 50 foot wall near the gallery.

The streets of the Meatpacking District. The Meatpacking District is an interesting area of NYC that has undergone quite a transformation over the years. Once home to over 250 packing establishments and the like, it became an area known for all kinds of shady activity during the 1980's. These days, one can find high-end shops in the area (and only a couple dozen meat-packing places). One aspect that I enjoy can be seen here... The old school look of the streets.
