Male anhinga.
Blue eye shadow means mating season. Anhingas develop this bright blue around the eyes when they are in mating season.
The anhinga (/ænˈhɪŋɡə/; Anhinga anhinga), sometimes called snakebird, darter, American darter, or water turkey, is a water bird of the warmer parts of the Americas. The word anhinga comes from the Brazilian Tupi language and means devil bird or snake bird. When swimming the origin of the name snakebird is apparent: only the colored neck appears above water so the bird looks like a snake ready to strike. They do not have external nares (nostrils) and breathe solely through their epiglottis.
The anhinga is placed in the darter family, Anhingidae, and is closely related to Indian (Anhinga melanogaster), African (A. rufa), and Australian (A. novaehollandiae) darters. Sonnenberg Gardens, also known as Sonnenberg Gardens and Mansion State Historic Park, Canandaigua, New York, USA, at the North end of Canandaigua Lake, in the Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York. The house and gardens are open to the public every day, May through October.
The property was once the summer home of Frederick Ferris Thompson, a prominent banker in New York City, and his wife Mary Clark Thompson, whose father, Myron Holley Clark, was Governor of New York State in 1855. The Clark family was from Canandaigua, NY. Mr. & Mrs. Thompson's main home was in NYC in a large townhouse on Madison Avenue. The Thompsons purchased the Sonnenberg property in 1863, keeping the name, Sonnenberg (which means "sunny hill" in German). In 1887, they replaced the original farmhouse with a forty-room Queen Anne style mansion. The property also had a 100-acre farm to the east. Sonnenberg's gardens were designed and built between 1902–1919, and originally consisted of nine gardens in a variety of styles.

Fall usually means the end of Milky Way season in the northern hemisphere. And so it is…along with the change of colors in the trees.
I drove just a couple hours north from Albuquerque, through Santa Fe, Nambe, Truchas, and lastly Peñasco on my way to Santa Barbara Campground, almost. (It was closed for the season.) Fall only just began near Albuquerque, but it was in full flow by the time I got to Truchas where the Aspens were clearly visible on the nearby slopes below some early snow-capped peaks.
A little hiking would bring me deep in the foliage, but I didn’t quite have the time to do much more than car camping. I was able to find a nice site nestled at the base of some cliffs and bordered by a mountain stream. Night sky photography is a bit tricky in enclosed landscapes. How much of the sky should I give up on? How faceted is the boundary between landscape and skyscape? I chose this small clearing for the lines of the trees and how they would frame the image, point to the sky. A bit of luck that this pointed me southwest where the Milky Way would be right after it got dark. I did set the scene slightly by taking a nearby daisy and relocating it to be in the frame—focus stacking puts this small object as a rather large element in the frame of my 14mm lens. The landscape was shot a bit after the area fell into shadow of the mountains—one of the easier lighting techniques to use for large areas! I might have gotten away with a long exposure and just starlight, but I doubt the colors would have been as lively. The moon would be non-factor this night, just one night past the new moon.
I shot the Milky Way with kind of a standard formula - 15s exposure, f3.2 (not the lens limit), ISO 3200, 14 mm lens and a Canon Ra camera. At 8,500 feet, my camera captures an insane density of stars. My processing involved 3 passes to reduce the star size / density. (Plenty left.) I like to set up my kit to take a series of images over 30 to 120 minutes just to make sure I get some options for the location of the Milky Way and clearness of the sky. It also lets me have a bit of fun putting together time lapse movies.

The Alba is closing from astern and starboard towards our Brim Explorer. She's more veteran, but has a certain charm and elegance (and speed!!) lacking in our more modern boat. Alba means "dawn" in Catalan, so we saw this "Dawn" at dawn.

When I was a kid; I was always ready to buy fall clothes in August... getting ready for fall! Now I want to pull out the cozy Blythe knits - I adore my collection of WoollyRockers "Kozy rollers" and skirts... can't have too many!

Day 192/365 for a doll a day
A photo from last year as I haven't been able to get out and about much due to tiredness caused by chemotherapy. I've sold half a dozen copies of this particular photo in my recent fundraising for Macmillan nurses and soon it will also be on a wall in Basingstoke hospital, where my life was saved just over three months ago.
A quick update for those of my Flickrfriends who are interested. Through the sale of a selection of my photos, all of which have been on Flickr and most on the BBC weather bulletins, and proceeds from the garden party, the total raised in the last two months is approaching £8,250. I will be presenting a cheque for this amount to Macmillan at the Causeway Hospital on Wednesday, where I have been asked to launch the new Cancer Pod (a walk-in information centre).
Thank you, my Flickrfriends, who have been with me on this journey, and who turned up en masse at the garden party. Thank you also to Geoff Maskell, the BBC weatherman, who also attended it. Oqaatsut (which means “cormorants” in Greenlandic) is a small settlement situated about 23km north of Ilulissat on the shores of Disko Bay. Originally known as Rodebay, it was established in the 18th century as a trading post for Dutch whalers. Its main industry now is fishing and tourism, and there are several adventures on offer from the small village. It is possible to stay overnight in Oqaatsut, and for keen hikers, you can walk all the way back to Ilulissat. The settlement has over 50 houses and buildings, a church, incinerator and a school. Many inhabitants still work with fishing in the nearby waters.

The three components that comprise a jaw coupling, sometimes also referred to by the brand name shown in the picture, used to attach a motor to a driven device, typically in industrial equipment.

Apparently that word means the warmth of the sun in the winter. As glorious as that feeling is, it pales in comparison to the delight experienced in witnessing this scene. I have lost count of the innumerable times I have stood here and photographed this landscape and yet simply cannot wait to revisit and recapture magical moments like this for as long as I can.

The Ijen volcano complex is a group of stratovolcanoes in the Banyuwangi Regency of East Java, Indonesia. It is inside a larger caldera Ijen, which is about 20 kilometers wide. The Gunung Merapi stratovolcano is the highest point of that complex. The name "Gunung Merapi" means "mountain of fire" in the Indonesian language.

Torc Waterfall, which means "cascade of the wild boar", apparently. It was our first stop on the Ring of Kerry. We didn't see any wild animals, but we got there ahead of the Ring of Kerry tour crowds, as we drove clockwise (tour buses go counter-clockwise).
