SAN DIEGO (Nov. 4, 2016) Lt. Kevin Beasley is congratulated by Rear Adm. William Byrne, commander, carrier strike group 11, during a graduation ceremony for Naval Surface and Mine Warfighting Development Center's (SMWDC) 17 new Warfare Tactics Instructors at Naval Base San Diego. Beasley was the 100th surface warfare officer to graduate from SMWDC's intensive 90-day WTI course. Byrne the ceremony's key note speaker said, "You are now teachers, coaches and mentors for the fleet -- teach well, coach well and lead well." Akin to Navy Fighter Weapons School (TOP GUN) for the Navy's best aviators, SMWDC is charged with increasing the tactical proficiency of the surface fleet by selecting an elite cadre of surface warfare officers to become WTIs - the best of the best in tactics. WTIs come from three surface warfare communities: amphibious warfare, anti-submarine/anti-surface warfare or integrated air and missile defense. SAN DIEGO (April 17, 2015) Boatswain's Mate 2nd Class Matthew Dixon embraces his son Julian following the guided-missile frigate USS Gary (FFG 51) return to Naval Base San Diego after completing its final deployment where it operated in the U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command/U.S. 4th Fleet and U.S. 3rd Fleet area of operations. During the seven-month deployment, Gary, the embarked "Scorpions" of Helicopter Maritime Strike (HSM) 49 Detachment 4, and a U.S. Coast Guard law enforcement detachment (LEDET), played an integral role in Operation Martillo.
