One of the most noticeable features of the castle is the red bridge that contrasts the dark color of the castle. The bridge leads to the Uzumi-mon entrance.

Matsumoto-jo is a National Treasure of Japan. Built in 1504 by Shimadachi Sadanaga of the Ogasawara clan, it served as a base for various lords until the Meiji Restoration. Although the gates and outer castle structures have been rebuilt or taken down all-together, the inner walls and main keep remain in tact. This makes Matsumoto-jo one of the most special castles in Japan--a true original. It is known as the Black Crow Castle, for it's dark color, a comparative moniker to the White Heron Castle, Himeji-jo.

Also known as the "Crow Castle" due to its black exterior. It is also one of the last original castles in Japan. I personally think it's one of the most beautiful castles in Japan

There remain very few original Japanese castles from ancient times, and Matsumotojo is one of the most beautiful and best preserved of them. The tower features an impressive keep and a smaller turret and other annexes. They were built in wood in the late 16th century and early 17th centuries on top of the stone defensive walls protected by a moat.

Matsumoto castle is known as the black crow castle and is a very picturesque example of the architecture of Japanese castles. Although parts of the castle have been rebuilt from time to time, the tower is one of Japan's National Treasures.

松本城

Matsumoto's castle also known as Karasu-jô, the "crow castle" due to the color of his walls. It was erected in 1595 and it's one of the 4 castes listed as a national treasure. It is located in the city of Matsumoto in the prefecture of Nagano.

Matsumoto was one of my favourite cities in Japan.

I wasn't in very good mood in the morning when I arrived from Tokyo to Matsumoto. It was Monday, and my final week in Japan was starting. I could already feel the end of my holiday approaching. I was also leaving behind all my friends in Tokyo, and didn't have any more meetings planned for the rest of the trip.

But Matsumoto turned out to be really charming a city, and my blues washed away pretty quickly. The town is situated in a beautiful location on a small plateau in the middle of Japanese Alps. It has about the same population as my home town, Tampere (although Matsumoto felt a little bit smaller). And it felt like a real town, unlike my other destination in the Alps, Hida-Takayama, which felt like only a tourist destination.

And most importantly, Matsumoto is the home my favourite bar in all of Japan. "Main Bar Coat" has seats for only 22 customers, and when those seats were filled, no more customers were allowed in. Serving the customers there was a staff of three bartenders, and more people in the kitchen. All bartenders spoke pretty good English and engaged in small talk with customers. The place had an excellent selection of Japanese whiskeys, which the staff was happy to introduce, and which I was happy to sample.

Matsumoto Castle as seen from across one of the castle's moats. As you can see, the castle is built on an artificial island cut into the center of the (relatively shallow) moat. The sides of the island are supported and defended by cut-stone walls.

The red bridge is one of two ways over the moat which access the castle. It is built with an attractive kink in the middle of the bridge, which also served a defensive purpose, making it harder to transport siege machinery across the bridge.

Matsumoto Castle is found in Matsumoto, Nagano prefecture, Japan. Matsumoto castle in one of the oldest castles in Japan, and one of only two "black" castles left in the country.

For over 400 years, Matsumoto Castle has stood proudly in the center of Matsumoto City. While it was built during the Warring States Period, it never saw battle, and instead of becoming a symbol of war, became a symbol of the people who worked so hard to protect it.

The castle is a National Treasure, not just because it is one of the few surviving castles left in Japan, but also because of its beauty and its unique construction. Both first-time visitors to Japan and seasoned castle enthusiasts can appreciate its chic black-and-white exterior and the majestic Japanese Alps in the distance.
