The "Marceline Local", BNSF Train L CHI0071 28I makes its way across the Missouri River Bridge at Sibley on the BNSF Marceline Sub. The local doesn't come east every day of the week, and oftentimes it only does so light power, so seeing it with a nice sized cut of cars for Hardin, Carrollton, Bosworth, and Mendon, along with the Cement City cars doesn't happen every day.
This job gets busier in the spring with the agricultural chemicals moving around as farmers put anhydrous into the soil ahead of corn. It doesn't always draw "vintage" power, so the SD60M/SD40-2 combo made it worth driving the entire two miles from the house to this spot.

Deadhead OCS move NS Train 956 rolls through a severe thunderstorm up to WB Jct. just east of Carrollton on the NS Kansas City District. They will wait for a high wind warning to expire before proceeding onto the BNSF Marceline Sub. joint trackage. The weather wasn't particularly conducive to photography early this morning, but I couldn't hardly pass up A-B-B-A F-Units that hadn't visited in 7 years.
I'd gotten off the Local 81 in Topeka early that morning and driven straight out to Carrollton hoping to get this train as far east as I could and chase it into KC. Hindsight being what it is, I wish I'd have gotten out the next day as well as the train went east since this turned out to be the last trip they'd make to town. These engines were soon up for sale due to Norfolk Southern's incessant PSR urge to strip the company of assets and line the pockets of executives and shareholders at the expense of a lot of interesting operations, equipment, and more importantly, the livelihoods belonging to hundreds of their employees.
The railfan in me is glad the other PSR roads have (so far) mostly abstained from such an egregious disposal of their heritage equipment. The railroader in me continues to be disgusted with the sacrifices and struggles the carriers have bestowed unwillingly upon thousands of their workers.
But anyway, here are some F-Units.

I didn't quite expect to be shooting a snow storm in Missouri in mid-April. Guess Mother Nature had other plans.
Dynamics howl as 2 GEs blaze thru the small town of Elmer on the Marceline Sub. The 2 units fight snow on the rail as San Bernardino bound vehicles push the train at track speed down a .7% grade. Shows a population of 65 people in 2019 in this mighty northern Missouri town. This old pickup truck has been here since at least 2018.
The DPU's on BNSF Train Q LACCHI6 14L make their way west on Main Track 2 of the BNSF Marceline Sub.-NS Kansas City District as NS Train 21T comes west on Track 3. The LACCHI had BNSF 6553, BNSF 5012, and BNSF 7187 on the head end.

The "Marceline Local" BNSF L CHI0071 25 streaks out of town past an old Santa Fe sign next to the BNSF Marceline Sub.-NS Kansas City District with their Warbonnet B40-8W trailing.
After dying in the previous night in the Ray-Carroll County Grain Growers loop track, the regular crew has tagged their job and will head to Marceline light power to grab tie cars before returning to Argentine tonight.
We'd hoped they would come out of here and head west back towards home with the 558 leading, but they decided to head further east to work. I guess this will do for now. Daylight saving time can't get here fast enough.

A trio of Heritage 2 ES44DC's and an SD70ACe move BNSF Train Z WSPNBY7 23L west down Main Track 1 of the BNSF Marceline Sub. past the Santa Fe coaling tower that still stands in the yard. Rumor is that the coaling tower is on the near future demolition list.

A westbound stack train passes under former Sante Fe signals during a momentary break in the clouds on an otherwise dreary afternoon on the Marceline Subdivision.
With a pair of KCS units and a pile of 6 SD60's coming off lease, NS Train 224 makes its way west on the BNSF Marceline Sub.-NS Kansas City District on Main Track 3 just east of Henrietta.
The SD60's are all former Oakways with the exception of the blue one, which is one of the SD60 demonstrators once EMD 3 and equipped with HTC-R Trucks. That one, GMTX 9000, was part of a joint lease between the Providence & Worcester/Vermont Rail System starting in 2014, and wears a unique variant of the GATX paint scheme.
They were all part of a batch leased from GATX and painted for the New York, Susquehanna and Western Railway with a couple different iterations of their paint scheme; some with NYSW reporting marks and "horsepower" numbers, some with GMTX reporting marks and 9000 numbers. After their stint on the Susie-Q, they were working an RJ Corman Property out of Lexington, KY until late 2022.
None of them are strangers here, having been leased from OWY to BN and later BNSF with "EMD" initials, running this track countless times. Oddly enough, the Susquehanna paint scheme isn't exactly a stranger to the Transcon in this area.
Back in 1995, NYSW acquired a 40% interest in the Toledo Peoria & Western, with full control going to Delaware Otsego Corporation in 1996. During that period, TP&W units wore the same scheme as parent company Susquehanna and were dispatched out of Cooperstown, NY. Why is this relevant? The TP&W ran an intermodal train out of Peoria, IL to Kansas City, via the ATSF/BNSF at Lomax, and it operated right through here, often with power wearing this same scheme up until they were bought by RailAmerica in 1999.
All that's old is new again. Sort of.

The Conrail Heritage Locomotive is on the point of NS Train 224 crossing all the way over from Main Track 1 to 3 on the BNSF Marceline Sub.-NS Kansas City District. This territory is operated as Joint Track with NS maintaining the former Wabash Main 2 between WB Jct. and Hardin, and Main 3 between here and CA Jct. Main 1 east of here, and Main 1 and 2 west of here are all former Santa Fe. They are all dispatched by BNSF in Ft. Worth between WB and CA Jct.
While several of the NS heritage units "tickle my fancy", the CR one is a favorite on the basis that of all them, it's the only predecessor scheme of theirs that I remember seeing in service prior to or after a merger.

The coaling tower at Marceline still stands the test of time. I didn't find a build date for this tower, but did find that the round cement part was used to hold sand. Cars of sand or coal would be spotted in the covered areas next to the coal or sand towers. The contents of the cars would be dumped through grates onto conveyors and lifted into the storage areas. Marceline once served as headquarters for the Missouri Division for the Santa Fe. Not much is left of the yard here, the headquarters is now a museum, and trains blast thru here with crew runs between Fort Madison/Galesburg and Kansas City. Here a westbound Q-train rolls down main #1 just west of downtown Marceline with containers traffic bound for San Bernardino, CA.
A BNSF C44-9W and 3 other motors lead another cookie cutter, run of the mil stack train over the Marceline subdivision, somewhere in northern Missouri.

A duo of BNSF GEVO's brings this Barstow, CA to Galesburg, IL mixed freight across the Missouri River on BNSF's Marceline Subdivision of the Transcon. Once the double track project around Matfield Green, KS is completed, this bridge will be the only remaining piece of single track on the entire BNSF Transcon between Chicago, IL and Los Angeles, CA. 6/23/20

Continuing the recent theme of "Goat Boat" Heritage 1 leaders, here's BNSF Train H GALTUL1 07A at the 422 signal on Main Track 1 of the BNSF Marceline Sub. just west of Floyd. It's incredible that it's Heritage 1 Dash-9's getting me over to the track lately, but here we are. I always liked these anyway, so it's nice to see them back on the point, or even in service for that matter. It as also neat to see all 3 BNSF schemes in chronological order in one consist.

Its Monday October 12th, 2020. On this Monday changes would go effect making this the 1st day of tri-weekly service between Chicago and LA for the Southwest Chief. Unfortunately long distance trains are getting the cuts in October from Amtrak due to Covid, or so they claim. As the week goes on everything from equipment, people, and traditions will change as this segment changes to 3 day a week service. Here #4 races across the Marceline Sub at Gorin as they make their way towards the next station stop at Fort Madison, IA, 40 miles ahead.
