Estimated to have been built around 340 BCE and has a long history with many uses from ship tax collection, quarantine hospital, radio station, and lighthouse.
Was also featured in the 1999 James Bond "The world is not enough," where the terrorists placed a nuclear submarine underneath the tower.
Today its a restaurant and a great setting for photographers :-)

Это Девичья скала, расположенная в старинном горном селении Старый Гоор. По местной легенде, девушки, страдавшие от несчастной любви совершали самоубийство, спрыгнув с этой скалы.
Когда мы выбрались из ущелья, солнце было высоко и было так приятно погреться в его лучах. Идеальное время для второго завтрака, тем более, что путь предстоял не близкий. Мы собирались посетить горный аул Старый Гоор и нам нужно было торопиться, потому что место довольно популярное и туристы начинали просыпаться. Голубое небо, огромные облака, мы ехали по горному серпантину и предвкушали будущие шедевры. Все шло хорошо, пока машина не заглохла и отказалась заводиться. Наверное, оказаться посреди нигде в сломавшейся машине довольно неприятно, но я думал только о том, что останусь без шедевров. Довольно эгоистично, признаю. Стоит отметить, что в Республике Дагестан автомобильное топливо не очень хорошего качества, и это обычное дело, что машины глохнут. Когда машину брали в прокат, ее снабдили запасными деталями и иснтрукцией, что и как заменить в случае такой ситуации. Пока мы меняли деталь, мы облили двигатель бензином. Фотографы... Полчаса мы стояли и проветривали подкатопное пространство. Машина завелась и мы продолжили свой путь. Когда мы поднялись в горы, старый дружище по имени дождь нас радушно встретил.
Я даже и не удивился, привык наверное. Туристов было много. Пытаясь мыслить позитивно, я решил - какое же разнообразие моделей. Я заснял десятки незнакомых мне людей на этой скале. Было довольно интересно, наблюдать за их эмоциями, когда они переступали свой страх. Но свой шедевр я так и не получил...

This is Maiden Rock, located in the ancient mountain village of Stary Goor. According to local legend, girls who suffered from unrequited love committed suicide by jumping off this cliff.
When we got out of the gorge, the sun was high and it was so nice to bask in its rays. The ideal time for a second breakfast, especially since the path was not close. We were going to visit the mountain village of Stary Goor and we had to hurry, because the place is quite popular and tourists were starting to wake up. Blue sky, huge clouds, we drove along the mountain serpentine and looked forward to future masterpieces. Everything was going well until the car stalled and refused to start. Probably, being in the middle of nowhere in a broken car is rather unpleasant, but I only thought that I would be left without masterpieces. Pretty selfish, I admit. It is worth noting that in the Republic of Dagestan, automotive fuel is not of very good quality, and it is common for cars to stall. When the car was rented, it was supplied with spare parts and instructions on what and how to replace in case of such a situation. While we were changing the part, we doused the engine with gasoline. Photographers... We stood for half an hour and ventilated the undercar space. The car started up and we continued on our way. When we climbed into the mountains, an old friend named rain greeted us cordially.
I'm not even surprised, I'm probably used to it. There were many tourists. Trying to think positively, I decided - what a variety of models. I photographed dozens of people I didn't know on this rock. It was quite interesting to watch their emotions as they overcame their fear. But I never got my masterpiece...

Oh dear, I seem to be on a wine theme...well I'm sure no one will hold that against me since we are currently functioning in a deep freeze here. This is from the Harlan Estate Vineyards, Napa Valley 2008. Trust me we did not buy this bottle of wine, it was a thank you from one of the many people we work for. Mark says it tripled the value of his "cellar"...LoL!

The Denby Maiden is a steam wagon built by the Yorkshire Patent Steam Wagon Co. in 1905. The wagon has a horizontal cross boiler rather than the vertical boiler or the longitudinal boiler that most steam wagons of the time have.
This pair of Canadian Geese had only one gosling and they were keeping a very close watch as it went on its first swim.
The beautiful maiden pink, Dianthus deltoides, is a small, perennial wildflower now on the Amber list as vulnerable because of habitat loss caused by overgrazing.
It grows on dry, lime-rich grassy banks and sand dunes in southeast Scotland, and seems to be thriving at St Cyrus National Nature Reserve, where it is monitored. I bought some seeds from Scotia Seeds, and it's now also thriving in a pot in my garden!
I love their serrated petals and the blue pollen.
The first of three SD35s purchased by Great Lakes Central from the Montana Rail Link exited the shop building in Owosso yesterday and hit the road on the northbound ONTN with a new road number and patch job. Conductor Rob gives a friendly wave as his train rips through Carland with a monster 72 cars heading for Clare and points along the way.

I looked this up on the WTA website and the photo they had did not prepare me for the beauty of this hike or the falls. This is about 10am and the sun is beaming but can't get through the canopy in this fairy tale spot. Easy hike and never saw another soul.

The meaning of the fell's name is obscure, the name "Maiden" is given to many prehistoric hill forts but there is no evidence that a hill fort ever existed on the fell, it may refer to a place where games or rituals were played where maidens took part.
Lake State Railway's 2022 Santa Train was the first assignment from the paint booth for both LSRC 6433 and 6351. The train is near Sterling, Michigan, deadheading back to Saginaw.

On the units maiden run in fresh INRD paint, INRD 7009 and another ex NS SD70M waste no time departing the CN interchange at Newton, IL with a BNSF H1 dash 9 and a handful of freight cars. The train, NTHW 25, will head to Palestine, IL to do some switching before heading back to Hiawatha yard in Jasonville, IN.

A washout in Somersworth on Tuesday morning suspended operations on the south end of the New Hampshire Northcoast for the week. Two units (NHN 3825, FURX 5509) were trapped south of the washout with a train of empties. Another set of sand cars was trapped in Boston for the week. The railroad ended up running a couple short shuttle trains to Rochester with all the cars remaining on the north side of the washout. They spent Wednesday working the bugs out of the NHN 3823, recently returned from a rebuild/repaint at NRE. On Thursday the 3823 made its' debut along with the GP18 and a short train of recently repainted sand cars. The mid day departure from the pit in Ossipee gave a chance to put the high sun to use to get this shot from a private farm overpass in East Wakefield that is always shaded.

The Maiden's Tower (Turkish: Kız Kulesi), also known as Leander's Tower (Tower of Leandros) since the medieval Byzantine period, is a tower on a small islet at the southern entrance of the Bosphorus strait 200 m (220 yd) from the coast of Üsküdar in Istanbul, Turkey.
After the naval victory at Cyzicus, the ancient Athenian general Alcibiades possibly built a custom station for ships coming from the Black Sea on a small rock in front of Chrysopolis (today's Üsküdar). In 1110 Byzantine Emperor Alexius Comnenus built a wooden tower protected by a stone wall. From the tower an iron chain stretched across to another tower erected on the European shore, at the quarter of Mangana in Constantinople. The islet was then connected to the Asiatic shore through a defense wall, whose underwater remains are still visible. During the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople (Istanbul) in 1453, the tower held a Byzantine garrison commanded by the Venetian Gabriele Trevisano.Subsequently, the structure was used as a watchtower by the Ottoman Turks during the reign of Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror.
The tower, often named Leander's Tower in reference to the legend of Hero and Leander (which took place in the Dardanelles strait, also known as the Hellespont in antiquity), was destroyed during the earthquake of 1509, and burned in 1721. Since then it was used as a lighthouse, and the surrounding walls were repaired in 1731 and 1734, until in 1763 it was erected using stone. From 1829 the tower was used as a quarantine station, and in 1832 was restored by Sultan Mahmud II. Restored again by the harbour authority in 1945, the most recent restoration began in 1998 for the James Bond movie The World Is Not Enough, and steel supports were added around the ancient tower as a precaution after the 17 August 1999 earthquake.
Today the interior of the tower has been converted into a café and restaurant, with views of the former Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman capital. Private boats make trips to the tower several times a day.

When I turned 18 I was up for the draft as the Vietnam War was raging on. Rather than dodge bullets I enlisted in Rickover's Navy nuclear engineering program, getting a great education I later served as a nuke on 2 boomer submarines, deep underwater for a total of 577 days safe from any bullets. Was quite a unique experience. Was hard but joining the Navy was one of the best decisions I ever made. Came out a better man. And as it turned out I would have been drafted...my number came up.
We celebrate our veterans in America on this date. Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918.
