Alabama & Tennessee River Railway Southbound Freight Train M715 ( Guntersville Turn ) works in Guntersville, AL. before heading back to Gadsden, AL. with a pair of former CN GP40-2LW’s in charge. ATN GP40-2LW 9401 is the only locomotive on ATN that is painted in the parent company OmniTrax paint scheme.
Alabama & Tennessee River Railway's M715 job exits the yard limits at Guntersville as it heads south, about to begin its ascent of Sand Mountain. This part of the ATN is a former NC&StL branch line; the 88.5 milepost is measured from Decherd, TN, where the branch left the mainline between Nashville and Chattanooga. This line featured a car float operation whereby rail cars were ferried by barges on the Tennessee River between Guntersville and Hobbs Island (south of Huntsville), a practice which lasted into the 1950s.

Who doesn't love OmniTrax, right? Don't answer that!
In a huge stroke of luck on this Halloween in 2015, the stars aligned and the only painted locomotive on the entire Alabama & Tennessee River RR roster actually led in good light. Train M715 is working Tucker Milling in Guntersville, AL before heading back to Gadsden.

The Kaiser Jeep M715 is an American wheeled military vehicle based upon the civilian Jeep Gladiator. In 1965 the design and developing for the M715 began. The U.S. Government purchased these trucks to replace the M37. Between 1967 and 1969 over 33,000 trucks were produced at the Toledo, Ohio plant. The overhead cam 6 cyl engines were not very reliable due to lack of knowledge on the overhead cam design and lack of maintenance. They had been dropped from civilian models by 1968. The trucks were replaced by the Dodge M880 series. Kia currently produces an M715-type vehicle named the KM450 for the South Korean Army on license from the U.S. Government. India's Tata/Vectra is also entering an M715 type vehicle as a candidate for the Indian Army's LSV requirement. In 2010 Mopar developed the concept vehicle Jeep NuKizer 715. It was a tribute to the original M715.

This was a lucky catch back in 2015. Periodically, OmniTrax goes on a bender and decides they are going to paint locomotives and care about their image. Then, like everyone else, they wake up the next morning full of regret. This is the sole painted locomotive on the Alabama & Tennessee River, and received this paint job courtesy of a trucking company whose tractor trailer it obliterated in Albertville, AL. 9401 leads two other units (including the first GP20 demonstrator 5625) down Sand Mountain at Littleton, AL.
