While the ground in front of me tell a story of many people at the depot in Durand, they tell only lies. While many likely came from Amtrak passengers that arrived hours earlier, there was not a soul there with me that night. The bitterly cold wind and temps in the 20s were fierce on any exposed skin, and the rush of light snowflakes in the draft of a fast moving M394 with a Dash-8 that had been pulled off the Iron Range.

After shooting it a couple days prior, the still very fresh EJ&E heritage unit came back through Michigan leading M394. Unlike the first time, I was limited to a one-and-done shoot which I had to make count. Passing by St. Mary Cemetery in Swartz Creek, I had deja vu with a heritage version of something I had done before.

Nothing like hiking a couple of miles in a blizzard to nab a shot of M394 with the old GTW coal tower in Lansing, MI. The snow was deeper than the tops of my boots but what a fun way to spend a snowy afternoon! 2/2/22

With a frosty fog, fresh coating of icy snow, and a chill in the air, it was the perfect setting for a first light CN M394 with a wonderful surprise leader. Coming into Battle Creek with CN 2454 leading, their 3rd unit, a UP GEVO, was cut off and a CN SD40-2W was added on the point. With marker problems plaguing the train, it gave me the time delay I needed to get some daylight and make all of this possible and worthwhile.

With a 4 pack of different GE units, Cn M394 makes it's way through London Ontario this morning. Cn 2032,2500,2450 and 2551.

I was shooting a CP close to London when I heard RTC talking to M394 about meeting a westbound west of London. With the help of someone whom had access to ATCS, I was able to make it to McLeod Interlocking just before the train. When I learned why the signal set-up here looked so unique I was reminded of CP Turnpike on the CSX Pemberville Sub. Similar to CSX Turnpike and its relation to Interstate 80/90, CN lowered the heads here at McLeod when the Adelaide Street overpass was completed many years ago to increase sight lines for crews.

When this train rounded the curve I was surprised and saddened to see the trio of cowls DIT likely going for scrap. I was particularly sad to see BCOL 4615 as just a few years ago I chased it solo on the Flint Sub with Colt Jeffries.

Well, not always I am i excited about a rebuild nowadays, but for this one, I can say that CN has done a fantastic job with the design. Hopefully, expanding on the comfort of the original SD75i, that it continues to serve as a unit of reliability, but only time will tell. Here was my first catch of the new ACC's leading CN M394, passing under the approach Goreway signals which has had a slight change in 2024. The north track signal used to have a staggered head just like the one the south (left), but now only has one due to upgrades at Goreway which are now the LED Vader signals.

CN 2436 is teamed up with a GECX junker as they hammer by Wayne Gretzky Parkway in Brantford with CN M394. On this day, 3/4 freights I shot had C40-8M leaders.

CN no.394 looks like something out of Ontario's foreign power era (especially with the additive that I shot it on film) with a BNSF pumpkin leading a CN Dash 9 at Hamilton West on the Dundas Sub. I took this on the day of the 2022 Bayview meet.

CN M394 rounds the bend at Paris Junction on its way east towards Brantford. In the background stands the now abandoned Medusa cement plant named after the mythical Greek Gorgon that turns people into stone who stare into it. The plant is one of many iconic and historic landmarks along the mainline in Paris.

CN M394 is seen curving through Paris Junction with SW1200RS SVGX 1343 trailing the power. Back on home rails after many years, this former CN unit built in 1959 with the same number was sold to CANAC in 1999, and later to Savage Services Corp. and it would appear has spent a number of years working at the Whiting, Indiana BP Refinery.

While normally a night/very early morning train on the Flint Sub, M394 was considerably late on the perfect day. With one of the two veterans units CN recently released leading, the train passes through Durand under the modern signal cantilever near the diamond.

What was a pile of boards before Christmas is no more now than a cobblestone foundation, the original Meal & More is gone. With a wonderful train to shoot a hole in the ground, CN M394 hustles through town with a pair of cowls and a BC Rail Dash-9, well worth the sleep loss.
