Bâti sur les plans d’un palais vénitien au XVIe siècle, le château de Chenonceau, doté de cinq arches enjambant élégamment le Cher, est l’unique château-pont au monde.
Surnommé le château des Dames, son histoire a été marquée, entre autres, par celle de cinq femmes, cinq grandes séductrices ou femmes de pouvoir : Diane de Poitiers, Gabrielle d’Estrées, Louise de Lorraine, Louise Dupin et Catherine de Médicis. Ces femmes l’ont, tour à tour, embelli, protégé, restauré, sauvé…
Le monument est sorti de terre en 1531 sous les ordres de l’architecte Catherine Briçonnet, épouse d’un grand bourgeois, qui l’a fait construire à l’emplacement d’une vieille forteresse médiévale détruite entre Tours et Selles-sur-Cher. Le domaine devient propriété de la couronne sous François Ier, puis Henri II en fait cadeau à sa belle maîtresse, Diane de Poitiers, qui y crée à son tour de magnifiques jardins.
Catherine de Médicis, reine d’origine florentine, récupère le bien de force à la mort du roi son époux Henri II et fait édifier les deux galeries, qui donnent l’impression que Chenonceau est un Ponte Vecchio tourangeau.
À la révolution, madame Dupin, femme d’esprit du Siècle des lumières, sauve le château des révolutions des sans-culottes contre les royalistes. Son tombeau est d’ailleurs toujours visible dans le parc du château. Au XIXe siècle, c’est une femme de la bourgeoisie industrielle qui restaure et embellit le monument : madame Pelouze. En 1913, Henri Menier fait l’acquisition du château et sa famille en est toujours l’heureuse propriétaire.
Aujourd’hui, il constitue un joyau unique de la Renaissance, sa façade éblouissante, due à la pierre blanche de tuffeau, s’accordant parfaitement aux courbes de ses tourelles...

View down the central funnel inside of the Reichstag dome on top of the Reichstag building, the seat of the German parliament (the Bundestag). The funnel is a so-called "light-diverting element" with mirrors that guides diffuse daylight into the plenary hall of the German Bundestag ten meters below and also serves as an exhaust "pipe" that deflects used air from the plenary hall through the 10-meter-wide central opening at the apex of the dome (which you can't see here).
For whatever reason the checked "pattern" of the reflective windows on the funnel's base (theoretically one could take a look into the plenary hall) always reminds me of a gambling table at a casino, hence the title which I've borrowed from one of the best James Bond movies (and I also like the 1967 parody). But of course, there's nothing "royale" or "gambling-ish" about this profoundly democratic place (which, as you know, it hasn't always been). Surrounding the funnel's base you can find the permanent exhibition "From the Reichstag to the Bundestag" which tells the eventful history of the Reichstag building from its beginnings to the present day.
