I think he was mid-yawn when I snapped this photo.

Lucifer hummingbirds do not nest in the Davis Mountains as far as anyone knows for sure. Lucifers visit our feeders from late spring through early fall.

These birds wander after breeding and visit us in the spring and summer in Davis Mountains of far West Texas.

In about 6 days Crocosmia will be in full bloom.

Regarded as one of the hardiest cultivars, 'Lucifer' adds a tropical flair to northern gardens. Beginning in midsummer and continuing into early autumn in some climates, brilliant flame red flowers stand in rows on wiry, gracefully arched stems that are perfect for cutting.

Crocosmia's broad, sword-like leaves are attractive even when the plants are not in bloom and, from a design standpoint, are effective for adding a spiky textured element to the landscape.

These 'buds' are coming out now and within days, the magnificent red will show through.

These birds nest farther south from us, but wander after nesting and sometimes show up in our yard.

Montbretia (Crocosmia) are a genus of plants in the iris family (Iridaceae). The habit of the species and varieties is vaguely reminiscent of gladioli. Some varieties are planted as ornamental plants in parks and gardens. The only seven to twelve species are native only south of the Sahara to the Capensis and on Madagascar. The genus is named after Antoine François Ernest Coquebert de Montbret (1780-1801), a (German-) French scientist. WIKIPEDIA

Forgot what these were as they did not bloom for 4 years...had a good laugh when I looked them up and found the name..Lucifer.

Lucifer is the name of an angel

Who is the angel Lucifer?

He is often seen as a fallen angel or the fallen archangel Lucifer, who was cast out of heaven by God when he rebelled against God. Satan is the leader of rebellious fallen angels, who have abandoned God under his leadership, and is seen as the personification of evil.

Part of the crocosmia family and one of my favourites in the garden. Quoted by Monty Don ...) "metre high sprays of blazing red flowers, "Lucifer" adds a touch of devilish drama to the high summer garden" ) I totally agree !!!

This is a pre bloom shot, taken toady .... its not the best quality shot but as i was fighting with the wind!

Strenuous 2.25 mile uphill hike to this beautiful waterfall, followed by a sketchy water crossing in order to get in front. The waterfall is pretty damn big. Found at the end of the Gorge Trail at Robert Treman state park in NY state.
