Last year I was the Grand prize winner of California Academy of Science's Love Life photo contest. I won a chance to go behind-the-scenes with the penguins at the Academy. Last month I visited San Francisco and finally had the chance to take the tour.
The Academy has a colony of 20 endangered African penguins. It's one of 45 institutions that participates in a population management program called the Species Survival Plan. All of the institutions work together to maintain the most diverse gene pool possible. Penguins are transferred between the 45 institutions around North America to mature and breed.
The exhibit at the Academy is a replica of Boulders Beach in South Africa, a location where the penguins are found in the wild. The Academy mimics their natural environment by changing the air and water temperatures based on the season. They also use a complex lighting setup to provide the penguins with sunrises, sunsets, mid-day sunlight, longer summer days and so on. Having realistic environmental changes are important for stimulating hormones, egg laying and replacement of feathers.
It was so interesting to observe the social dynamics of the colony and was surprising to see the many different personalities. There was a rebellious penguin, a very outgoing and social penguin that loved posing for my camera, a shy penguin and even a couple that has been together for 15 years and spends much of their time together.

possibly the most important thing i'm going to take away from the last year of taking pictures of myself is i am no photographer, nor will i be one. and i'm okay with that. sure, ideas come and go, but never in a manner that needs to be taken care of RIGHT NOW! i've no aspirations for anything further with photos. i'll leave that to the pros.
but now it's over.
interesting, going through pictures and finding memories of taste and longing with each one. maybe a joke or smile. anyway.
Being a fashion designer is so awesome, sometime I made my outfit a day before I want to wear it. I made this plaid skirt yesterday and wore it to Church this morning for Christmas mass. When I got home, I was feeling like dancing... My Christmas Day just went like that and this...Very relaxing and fun...
Contact me if you would like to purchase this plaid skirt. Available in different solid colors, prints, and patterns.
(I did not bring my iPad to Church today, so proud of myself :) )
Merry Christmas 🎄
And Happy New Year 🎊
xoxo

graffiti on the side of my building. of course the graffiti police had to power wash it away - and i did like being reminded to love life.
I found this praying mantis while on a bike ride and stopped to take some photos. Does anyone know what the dots on it's arm are? I'd guess that they're just natural markings for this particular species. They reminded me of a tattoo sleeve, but somehow I doubt that's the case.
the last in the current set of mixed media pieces, called "love (every minute of) life." 45rpm vinyl with a spray painted (blood orange) CD on top, with poker chips, Lego pieces, Lite Brite pegs, dice, matchsticks, a chess castle, Monopoly-style houses, a fortune cookie fortune and a blue plastic airplane. All epoxied together super tight.
metal wall hanger on the back.
Complex lighting system that gives the penguins sunrises, sunsets, twilights, mid-day sun, longer days in summers and shorter days in winters. Having realistic environmental changes are important for stimulating hormones, egg laying and replacement of feathers.
