Detail of the decoration of the South side of the Versailles castle. Inside, on the main floor, is the Salon de la Paix and the room of the Queen.
The style of the back of the castle shown here is very different from the style of the castle from the cour d'honneur. Louis XIV was always very strict in keeping the brick and marble style of the pre-existing hunting lodge of his father when expending the front of the palace, unlike for the other parts.
Scaffoldings were hidding large parts of the castle, making it difficult to get a good picture. I like the angle in this photograph however.
La perspective vue un soir de juin 2009... Le parc était fermé, il n'y avait donc aucun touriste en vue ! Profitez de ce rare spectacle...

Peinture de Louis XIV assistant, dans le parc de Versailles, à l’inauguration de la statue du Milon de Crotone de Puget par Gabriel Lemonnier (1819), musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen, Seine-Maritime, Normandie, France.
This set of buildings constituted Louis XIV’s second residence and offered him a life less constrained by the protocols of the Court. Constructed by Jules Hardouin-Mansart in 1687, this “little palace of pink marble and porphyry with delightful gardens” was inspired by Italian architecture. The furniture displayed in the rooms dates from the First Empire and testifies to Napoleon's many periods of residence at the Grand Trianon, with his wife the Empress Marie-Louise.
Le pavillon central (conçu par Liberal Bruant) qui donne accès à la cour d'honneur (ancienne cour royale) forme un arc triomphal. Sa voûte est soulignée d'une guirlande de trophées dont le point culminant est un soleil à visage humain. Il surmonte un groupe sculpté réalisé par Guillaume Coustou en 1732/33. Louis XIV y est représenté en impérator romain avec en dessous l'inscription en latin "Louis le grand par munificence royale pour ces soldats et prévoyant pour la suite des temps, a fondé cet édifice en 1675".. cette inscription est encadré par les statues de deux vertus, la Justice avec sa balance et la Prudence avec son miroir, elles valorisent la sagesse du souverain.
Au-dessus de la porte un mascaron représente la tête d'Hercules.
De chaque coté de la porte on trouve la statue de Mars dieu de la guerre et de sa sœur Minerve déesse de la sagesse et de la guerre.
The central pavilion (designed by Liberal Bruant) which gives access to the court of honour (former royal court) forms a triumphal arch. Its vault is underlined by a garland of trophies, culminating in a sun with a human face. It surmounts a sculpted group made by Guillaume Coustou in 1732/33. Louis XIV is depicted as a Roman emperor with the Latin inscription "Louis the Great, by royal munificence for his soldiers and with foresight for the future, founded this building in 1675". This inscription is framed by the statues of two virtues, Justice with its scales and Prudence with its mirror, which emphasise the wisdom of the sovereign.
Above the door, a mascaron represents the head of Hercules.
On either side of the door are statues of Mars, god of war, and his sister Minerva, goddess of wisdom and war.

We're back home... just in time to share a quick photo of the day! We spent the day at Palais de Versailles. We only got to see the palace though, the gardens were closed because of the snow and ice, and I did not get to see Marie Antoinette's estate :(
I had to shoot this through the glass, because the table was encased in a glass box to protect it. And I would have loved to back up a little to get a bit more of the chandeliers on the table, but I couldn't because there were around 20 people pushing behind me to see the table as well ;) (soooo busy!)
Loved the bokeh I got in this shot, so I quickly choose this one as photo of the day. I'll browse through the rest of my photos tomorrow and post more on my blog.

Designed for Louis XIV at Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte, the ornate Chambre du Roi did nothing to did nothing to save Nicolas Fouquet from Louis' anger -- the King had been persuaded by Colbert to believe that his minister's magnificence was funded by the misappropriation of public funds and had him arrested. Louis was only 22 at the time, but he could not bear to think that one of his ministers could have something better than he. Louis sent architect, landscape architect and painter-designer to design the palace and gardens of Versailles.
The château was restored to its original glory in the late 19th century after decades of neglect.

Les appartements de Mesdames, filles de Louis XV, ont été ré-ouverts à la visite du public le 25 avril 2013, après d'importants travaux de restauration et remeublement. Ils sont désormais accessibles tous les jours de la semaine.
Elles surplombent la cour de marbre, et font face aux deux autres continents connus à l'époque, l'Afrique et l'Amérique.
Statue de Louis XIV, moulage en plomb effectué en 1988 d'un marbre du Bernin (Gian Lorenzo Bernini) modifié en statue de Marcus Curtius par Girardon, en 1687, sur l'ordre du roi.

to be in Versailles is always a great pleasure when we visit Paris. Now it was the third time to stay in Versailles and just having day trips to Paris...a very individual concept...
Gardens of Versailles : Bassin de Latone
Located on the east-west axis just west and below the Parterre d’Eau, is the Bassin de Latone. Designed by André Le Nôtre, sculpted by Gaspard and Balthazar Marsy, and constructed between 1668–1670, the fountain depicted an episode from Ovid’s Metamorphoses. Latona and her children, Apollo and Diana, being tormented with mud slung by Lycian peasants, who refused to let her and her children drink from their pond, appealed to Zeus who responded by turning the Lycians into frogs.

This is the first and last picture at the Palace of Versailles, when I was able to escape the hordes of tourists.
This royal palace was expanded in the 1660s under Louis XIV to become the largest palace in Europe, reportedly housing 20,000 people.

Un palais dans l'océan
"Appartement du roi" (1er étage) : seul phare au monde disposant d'un logis royal, bien qu'aucun roi n'y soit jamais passé, il a été aménagé à la demande de Colbert lors d'une importante réfection du bâtiment (1661-1664). Il est pavé de marbre gris clair et noir, possède une cheminée en état de marche, et un décor sculpté de style classique, au chiffre LMT (initiales de Louis XIV et de son épouse Marie-Thérèse d'Autriche). De là lui vient son surnom de "Versailles de la mer".
Près de la boulangerie se trouve la "chambre de vannes" qui récupérait la chaleur pour chauffer l'eau.
La "chambre des vannes" est le lieu utilisé par le Gouverneur et les Officiers supérieurs comme salle de bains et Hamman.
Au sol circule une des trois sources de la forteresse. Par l'utilisation des vannes l'eau était envoyée dans la citerne(au fond de la salle) chauffée grâce à la présence de deux fours à pain situés au dos de la citerne.
Cette eau chaude circulait ensuite tout autour de la pièce, dans le muret, via une canalisation en plomb. Puis elle se déversait dans le bassin "réservoir"(à l'entrée de la salle) remplissant ensuite le bassin du bas "baignoire".
Cette circulation d'eau chaude permettait de chauffer, aussi, la pièce. Un banc était positionné sur la grille du sol. Le Gouverneur pouvait s'y asseoir pour prendre un bain de vapeur.

The artillery tower was built during the reign of king Louis XIV and the fort was upgraded during the nineteenth century, for fear of an english landing.
The bunker behind the bushes was built by the Germans during the Second World War as part of the Atlantic Wall.

La présence d'un château à Maintenon est attesté depuis le XIIIème siècle. Il appartient à la lignée des Amaury et reste en leur possession jusqu'au XVIème siècle. En 1674, Françoise d'Aubigné, future Mme de Maintenon achète l'ensemble du domaine grâce au soutien financier de Louis XIV. Classé aux monuments historiques en 1944.
