To begin with, it takes great pride to see the art of drama which started in the era of kings continues till date through centuries. Its also a worthy mention to share with you all that the art of acting in our country started this way.
The art of Drama / Stage shows have always been a cultural part of India and are always related to the Legendary epics, eg., Ramayana and Mahabharatha.
In this case the series is about Mahabharatha happening every year around the Legendary city of Kanchipuram, the home place of the Pallavas. This series was shot @ Ocheri. The play took place throughout a week every day from dusk to dawn and I was very unlucky to watch only a night's play.
With actors of current age struggling to make a good performance in a single movie, a group of few people (may be 10 max) play all the characters to be done (just imagine only the very important characters in Mahabharatha). After completion of a character, they go backstage, remove the make-up, switch on to the next make-up, and prepare themselves for the next role to be enacted. Each and every Artist do their work themselves.
It was an interesting night altogether with a great experience.

Natungram Wood Carvings/Katwa Dolls
Ethnic character dolls handmade from Katwa (Bardhamaan District, West Bengal); carved in wood and decoratively painted by a group of rural artists. These artisans are referred to as 'Sutradhars' (meaning 'narrator' or 'story teller'), probably because they make characters from ancient folklore and mythology and tell stories through their dolls. People bring these dolls home as an auspicious element, like Lord Krishna with Radha.

The Hindu God Lord Krishna. Krishna is one of the most worshipped Gods in whole world.
Krishna is also called by several other names such as Govinda, Mukunda, Madhusudhana, and Vasudeva. Krishna is often portrayed as an infant eating butter; a young boy playing a flute, and as in the Bhagavata Purana, a young man along with Radha; or a young man surrounded by women devotees; or as an elderly gentleman giving direction and guidance, as in the Bhagavad Gita. The stories of Krishna appear across a broad spectrum of Hindu philosophical and theological texts. They portray him in various perspectives: a god-child, a prankster, a model lover, a divine hero, and as the Supreme Power. The principal scriptures discussing Krishna's story are the Bhagavata Purana, the Mahabharata, the Harivamsa, "Krishnacharitmanas" and the Vishnu Purana.

All carvings are done in uniquely Indian style. Most of these styles were developed in 10th and 11th centuries, when many of India 's temples and sculptures were built. Get these religious and inspirational collectible figurines to achieve divine feelings at home.Brass sculpture of Krishna comes from norther part of India. Krishna took birth at midnight on the ashtami or the 8th day of the Krishnapaksha or dark fortnight in the Hindu month of Shravan (August September). According to most Hindus, He is the God himself, the Supreme Being. The great exponent of the Gita, Krishna is the ninth and the complete incarnate of Lord Vishnu. The birth of Krishna is a transcendental phenomenon that generates awe among the Hindus and overwhelms all with its super natural events. When Devaki gave birth to her first child, her brother, the evil king Kamsa came to the prison cell and slaughtered the newborn. This way, he killed the first six sons of his sister one after the other. Suddenly Lord Vishnu appeared before them and said he himself was coming to rescue them and the people of Mathura. Vishnu assured them that nothing shall bar your path. At midnight on ashtami, the divine baby was born in the prison. Remembering Vishnus instructions, Vasudeva, Devakis husband clasped the child to his bosom and started for Gokul. His legs were in chains. He jerked his legs and he was free. The massive iron doors unlocked and opened up. While crossing river Yamuna, Vasudeva held his baby high over his head. The rain fell in torrents and the river was in spate. However, the water made way for Vasudeva and a mighty five headed snake followed him from behind and provided cover over the baby with its hood.

Patan Durbar Square is situated at the centre of Lalitpur city. It is one of the three Durbar Squares in the Kathmandu Valley, all of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. One of its attraction is The Ancient Royal Palace where the Malla Kings of Lalitpur resided.
The Durbar Square is a marvel of Newa architecture. The Square floor is tiled with red bricks. There are many temples and idols in the area. The main temples are aligned opposite of the western face of the palace. The entrance of the temples faces east, towards the palace. There is also a bell situated in the alignment beside the main temples. The Square also holds old Newari residential houses. There are various other temples and structures in and around Patan Durbar Square build by the Newa People.
The square was heavily damaged on 25 April 2015 by a major earthquake.
HISTORY
The history of the Durbar Square is not clear. Although the Malla Kings of Lalitpur are given credit for establishing the royal square, it is known that the site is an ancient crossroad. The Pradhanas who settled around the site before the Mallas have connections with the Durbar Square. Some chronicles hint that the history of patan Thakuri Dynasty built a palace and made reforms to the locality but the evidence is minute. Scholars are certain that Patan was a prosperous city since ancient times.
The Malla Kings did make important changes to the square. Most of the current architecture is from the 1600s, constructed during the reign of King Siddhinarasimha Malla and his son Srinivasa sukriti. Some of the notable Mallas Kings who improved the square include Purandarasimha, Sivasimha Malla and Yoganarendra Malla.
IMPORTANT STRUCTURES
Patan is one of the oldest known Buddhist cities. It is a center of both Hinduism and Buddhism with 136 bahals or courtyards and 55 major temples. Most of these structures are in the vicinity of the Durbar Square.
KRISHNA MANDIR
Krishna temple is the most important temple in Patan Durbar Square. It is built in the Shikhara style imported from India although it is unique in its own way. The stone carvings along the bean above the first and second floor pillar is most notable. The first floor pillar carvings narrate the events of the Mahabharata, while on the second floor there are visual carvings from Ramayana.
The temple was built in 1637 by King Siddhinarasimh Malla. It is said that one night the King saw the LordKrishna and his consort Srimati Radha standing in front of the royal palace. He ordered a temple to be built on the same spot. There are 21 golden pinnacles in the temple. Below the pinnacles are 3 stories. The first floor holds the main shrine of Lord Krishna with shrines of Radha and Rukamini at each side. The second floor is dedicated to Lord Shiva and the third to Lokeshwor(Lord Buddha).
The square is crowded with thousands of Hindu Pilgrims and devotees during Krishnastami.
BHIMSEN TEMPLE
Bhimsen temple was built by Srinivasa Malla in 1680. It is renowned for its three interconnected golden windows. Bhimsen is a great hero in Mahabharata. He was known to be very brave and strong. In Newa Tradition, he is worshipped as a god of business and trade. Tourists are not allowed inside the temple.
VISHWANATH TEMPLE
Vishwanath temple is dedicated to god Shiva. It was built in 1627 during the reign of Siddhinarasimha Malla. The roof supports are decorated with erotic carvings similar to imagery widespread in Shiva temples in India. The temple is guarded by two stone elephants in the front entrance. On the other side of the temple is the sculpture of a bull, Shiva’s vehicle. A stone linga is enshrined inside the temple.
TALEJU BHAWANI TEMPLE
Taleju temple was built by Siddhinarasrimha Malla in 1640 and rebuilt by Srinivasa Malla in 1667 after a fire. Taleju Bhawani was the personal deity of the Malla kings. It is a five-storey temple with triple-roofs. 14th Century chronicle of Gopala kings hint a Taleju temple was built by the Pradhanas before the Mallas.
LAYOUT OF THE PALACE
The three main courtyards in the palace are Mul Chok, Sundari Chok and Keshav Narayan Chok. Besides these courtyards, the complex boasts impressive temples, religious shrines, and historical places, all noted for their exquisite carvings and beautiful display of ancient Newari architecture.
MUL CHOK
Mul Chok is the central courtyard. It is the most famous and largest courtyards among the three main chowks. At its center is located Bidya Temple, and Taleju temples stand around the courtyard. The doorway to the Shrine of Taleju, on the southern side of the courtyard, is confined by the statues of the river goddesses Ganga, on a tortoise, and Jamuna, on a carved makura (mythical crocodile).
SUNDARI CHOK
Sundari Chok is to the south of the Mul Chok. It is designed with sunken tank known as Tusha Hiti. Smaller than the Mul Chok, it is now open to the public. The entrance of the chok is guarded by the stone statues of Hanuman, Ganesh and Narasingha, man-lion form of Vishnu
KESHAV NARAYAN CHOK
Keshav Narayan Chok is towards the northern part with Degutale temple next to it.
WIKIPEDIA
The night before the Pooram, both the participating temples (Thiruvambady and Paramekaavu) showcase the 'kudas' (umbrellas) and 'anachamayam' (elephant caparisons) that will be used the next day. This is Thiruvambady's collection on display.
The 'Cloud' white-balance under artificial lighting tends to make the pictures over-saturated. I had to tone down the saturation a little bit when post-processing.
