Baby carrots in a bowl on an orange sheet of paper for Looking Close…on Friday theme of “The Color Orange.”
“Remembrance, like a candle, burns brightest at Christmastime.” – Charles Dickens.
The theme for the 18th of December “Looking Close… on Friday” is “one single candle”. Lighting candles at Christmastime is special for me, not only because it casts a beautiful warm glow, but also because we have a European tradition in our family that when we light a candle on Christmas Eve, we remember those who are no longer here. Then, because they are alive in my heart, they are with me to celebrate my most favourite time of the year.
As this is the last “Looking Close… on Friday” before Christmas, I should just like to wish everyone in the group a very happy Festive Season. It may be a different one this year, and there may be more people to remember in our hearts, but may it be filled with happiness and joy for you all.
For Christians, a candle is lit at Christmastime to represent the Star of Bethlehem, guiding the Magi to the stable where Jesus was born. For those of Jewish faith, a menorah in the window is a Jewish custom symbolising the miracle of Chanukah (when a single jug of oil burnt for eight days).
For many years, I used an atelier to make me beautiful clothes with whom I developed an amazing bond. She understood me, knew my likes and dislikes, was creative and could bring my designs to life, since I have aptitude for the designing of clothes, but not for the sewing of them. Imagine my horror when she moved, first to Sydney, which we could manage, and then to Berlin! Even the deepest pockets couldn’t justify the price of flying to Berlin for multiple consultations and fittings! I never thought I would find another, that is until I was introduced to Kathryn, who altered an evening dress for the daughter of a friend of mine and made a silk purse from a sow’s ear. After meeting Kathryn I found her to be the perfect new atelier for me. She is friendly, an excellent sewer, consultative and very willing to try new ideas, be dynamic and work with some tough fabrics! What more could I ask for from an atelier?
The theme for “Looking Close on Friday” for the 4th of February is “clothing labels”. This label from my atelier, Kathryn Ellard, seemed the perfect choice. Sewn inside a jacket I had made for a wedding three years ago, the label is luxurious and features a nice vignette of Art Nouveau swirls, which for anyone who follows me will know is perfect, as I love Art Nouveau design. I hope you like my choice for the theme, and that it makes you smile.
This agressive fish is in fact a pencil sharpner, the background is an address book.
There is some pencil sharpening on it's nose :)

Nuii is made by Froneri, the second largest ice cream company in Europe and the third biggest in the world. Froneri are trying to tap into the growing market for, as they call it, indulgent adult ice cream and with the Nuii range, they have produced sticks made with ice cream, coated in a thick layer of chocolate and, as they describe it, “a more artisanal finish”.
There are four different flavours in the range with this being just one of them and my favourite! Froneri said the cocoa used in Nuii products supports responsible, sustainable cocoa farming. The Nuii range is trying to build on the success of Froneri’s Connoisseur brand in Australia, one which some of you Aussie members might be aware of.
Froneri are totally English, with their headquarters in North Yorkshire in the U.K..
The theme for “Looking Close on Friday” for the 26th of November is “lips”. In recent months, I have been exploring a new avenue in my creativity, that of portraiture photography. I used my sitter for the “Smile on Saturday” theme of “nose” a little over two months ago and again a little over a month ago for “Looking Close on Friday’s” theme of “dots and stripes”. My elusive sitter has agreed to return for a third time, and has kindly shirked his usual garb of a smart suit and tie in exchange for a tulle ruff. When combined with a special plaster mask layered with torn paper given to me as a gift by an artist friend who made it especially for me, I think they give my shot something of a commedia dell'arte feel. In keeping with the Italian feel, I have given my photo the title of “Baciami”, which I am told is Italian for “kiss me”! I think he has a rather lovely set of lips which are quite kissable, don’t you? I do hope that you like my choice of this week’s theme, and that it makes you smile!
These Japanese Maple leaves, dressed in their most vibrant autumnal colours look almost too good to be real: instead, made of paper with edges cut and crimped with pinking shears. However, I can assure you that they are very real.
Autumn in Melbourne is always beautiful, with many wonderful deciduous trees aflame like this well established Japanese Maple which I photographed on a walk through the inner northern Melbourne suburb of North Fitzroy. Melbourne had a beautiful and vibrant autumn display of leaves this year which were simply glorious.
The theme for “Looking Close… on Friday!” is “leaves”.
As soon as I read what the theme was, this was the first photograph I thought of. It was one I meant to put up in Autumn, not long after I took the photograph. Yet like so many photos, I just ran out of time and I moved on to other things in my photostream. Now I’m glad that I held it back. I hope that its flame brightness brings you as much joy and delight as it did me! Enjoy!
Fitzroy North has a distinct character, noted for its prevalence of wide streets and avenues, intact Victorian and Edwardian era terraced housing and for the Edinburgh Gardens, a large inner-city park formerly home to the Fitzroy Football Club. Fitzroy North is adjacent to, and shares a postcode and neighbourhood character with Clifton Hill, both being government subdivisions set on elevated ground and to the same layout by Clement Hodgkinson in the 1870s, and distinct from the earlier narrow and more crowded private subdivisions in the lower lying areas of Fitzroy and Collingwood to the south. Most of Fitzroy North is single and double storey Victorian and Edwardian housing, comprising rows of terraces, with a mixture of semi-attached and freestanding houses on small to moderately sized blocks. Large parts of the suburb are protected by heritage controls. The suburb is relatively intact and consistent in character, having had far less industrial and commercial development in its formative years than its southern namesake.
I had to get out my DSLR for this one. I used a +4 Tameron lens filter to get in close with a narrow focal point. I need a macro lens, and to get my camera checked. It keeps freezing up with an error message...ugh! Anyway, the unblurred medallion is 1" wide by 2" long. For Looking Close on Friday "jewellery selective colour". Full color photo in first comment. Happy Friday everyone!

These were given to us by a client who raises chickens. He told us the tiny egg on the bottom left is called a virgin egg. First egg a chicken produces. We did not eat it!
