A balmy unseasonably warm night in Big Sur. Looking at the heart of Big Sur into the heavens lit by a nearly full moon. My new look at an old friend, having photographed these lands for over 35 years.

New ideas for old friends.

I really had to wait for a train to speed by to make this shot. There's no second chance unless, I decide to wait for another train which would not necessarily drain my patience but definitely freeze me to death at the middle of a windy winter night.

Portfolio & Services

After being forgiven for posting my bridge shots first, Kendra and I decided to trade in concrete for granite and head south to Big Sur, specifically Garrapata State Park. The plan entailed stopping along many of the dirt pull outs along Highway 1 south, hopping out, and exploring some of the short coastal trails to the ocean.

The trail down to the popular sea stacks closer to Soberanes Point is fairly tame until you get right to the end, then you have to do your best mountain goat impersonation for a short 15-20' drop to the rocky beach below. Our very first stop, north of the above mentioned cove, we headed down some freshly laid dirt and log steps, and thought "this is nice!". We quickly realized the end of this trail was very similar with steep granite cliffs but with plenty of hand and footholds for a smooth descent.

Hiking around this new rocky cove, we were amazed at all the potential and found no need to go anywhere else. Looking around, I noticed a lot of large boulders strewn about. Some had tell tale signs of cracking in two after tumbling down the cliff. Peering upward, I could not help but think how squashed I would be if one of these big rocks above decided it was time to finally let gravity take over. Yikes!

The only problem with being content with our spot was we had allotted more time to explore. I am overall, pretty impatient, so we went back up to the car, sat around for a bit, and finally drove down to pull out a half mile down the road. You may ask, "why not just walk?". Well, Highway 1 in this area is very narrow, there is only about 1-2' of shoulder between pull outs and there were plenty of "Sunday drivers" out (it was Sunday, after all). This second spot seemed very promising as well, maybe for sunrise, but we'll save that for when it actually happens.

We finally head back down to our original vantage point, checking out how our lenses are seeing the world, and my impatience rises to the surface. No vantage point is really making me get the warm, fuzzy feeling. The cliffs and pounding surf below meant careful placement of...everything, from camera bag, tripod feet, my feet, you name it. One false move, and tumbling into the sea like the big boulders above would be a certainty.

I finally knew where I wanted to shoot, and I had my "out" in case the waves came too high. No rogue waves today, although I did get a tad wet. Dinner in Monterey consisting of Newcastle, curry fries, and a bleu cheese bacon burger warmed my belly, if not my feet.

Note: maxxsmart's image of this rocky shore inspired me to get out and really look around, as this is one of the most photogenic parts of the California coast. Although I had no idea at the time, it turns out I think my shot is from the same cove.

Taken with Sony NEX-5, Rokinon 12mm f/2.0 lens, and a Lee Big stop filter. Comments and critique are much appreciated!

There was absolutely no room for error getting this shot at Dillon Falls this morning. I was standing in the water on the edge of the precipice you see in the photo, with a pitch of 76.5° and a 40 foot drop over the edge to the raging Class 5 rapids below. But. Worth the shot.

It looks like a whole new bridge! On Friday night I found out they would be testing the new lights, so why wouldn't I go shoot it. The lights dance however, but it's not the easiest shot to get, unless you shoot at a crazy high ISO to capture the light patterns. Either way, the lights look awesome.

Starting March 5th (Grand Lighting) they will be for a couple years, or even longer if people petition to keep them up like the last set of lights!

The Bay Lights is an iconic light sculpture designed by internationally renowned artist Leo Villareal. This stunning fine arts experience will live for two years on the San Francisco Bay Bridge West Span, starting with the Grand Lighting on March 5, 2013. Visit www.thebaylights.org/ for more information on the project. It will also become world's largest light sculpture. — at Bay Bridge.

I was revisiting files from our honeymoon and realized I'd never worked up THIS angle of Cenote X'keken, where you can see the amazing water better and all the fishies.

We're planning our third annual trip to the Yucatan, and I'm already drooling over what awaits us.

Four solid days of rain in the Redwood National Park. Maybe five. Don't know, I've gone stir crazy. Ready for a sunset. Sheep Pen Creek, Redwood National Park, Smith River National Forest. Hiouchi, California USA.

this blue hour image was captured the night before the supermoon event...earlier that night, the moon was partially covered by thin clouds but it eventually cleared up and i was able to capture several moon shots that night...this scene was shot on the DuSable Bridge along Michigan Avenue looking east towards Lake Michigan...love the reflections of the lights on the Chicago River in this scene...i wanted to do a bulb exposure but the passing traffic on the bridge was causing too much vibration that a really long exposure was kind of difficult to do...pls. do try to View On Black

The river was flowing at roughly 20,000 cubic feet per second when I got there, and that was half of what it was doing an hour before. These are long exposure photos shot from on and around the Main Street bridge in DTLA. Now I know why they paved over this river: If they didn't, we'd all die. I saw a refrigerator being carried along at about 40 MPH. It was smashed into oblivion when it hit the next bridge. On a happier note, I believe that some of these waves are surfable. If you don't mind dying, that is. Ugh. Well, Happy Xmas or whatever to y'all, me and the chihuahua are going to Death Valley to kick it. Seriously.

Took a road trip with a good friend of mine today. We scoured the countryside looking for Texas sized landscapes. This was the first we saw and my favorite. We didn't take many images, but we had a wonderful time. The funny thing is the broken windmill actually resemelbes the shape of Texas on the top of it.

this is another long expsoure at f7.1 for 22 seconds

My second attempt at milky way photography. Definitely an area I want to learn more about...

Smith River, Redwood National Park, Smith River National Forest. A mere days ago, I was able to drive on this rock bar along the Smith River. After days of steady rain, the river reclaims it as a river bed. This long exposure shot was no easy feat in driving rain, getting a tripod and camera gear into the water while holding an umbrella was quite the fun time. Hiouchi, California USA

Storm Eric provided some great conditions for some Long Exposure photography. Happy Friday :-)

My representation of Tagores famous quote. This was taken using a mobile phone manually on a tripod.

Fort Lauderdale is a city located on Florida's southeastern coast. This urban area is known worldwide for its beaches and miles of boating canals. The Strip is a popular promenade running along the oceanside highway A1A. This city was once the site of raucous spring break parties; however, the Strip is now lined in upscale outdoor restaurants, bars, boutiques and luxury hotels. Port Everglades, in nearby Hollywood, is among the world's busiest cruise terminals which competes with the Port of Miami.
