That is the distance to the Shard from the spot I took this shot. The Shard for those not familiar with London is the tall pointy triangular building on the horizon just to the right of centre. It sits very near the river Thames and very close to Tower Bridge. There are two radio transmitting towers shown as well. On the right is Crystal Palace transmitting station, the tallest in south London, and sits 9.25 km (5.75 miles) from where I stood to take this. The tower on the left, the Croydon transmitting station, is 7.73 km (4.8 miles) from me here. I know all this from the technical wonder that is Google Earth. Oh, and in case you were wondering, the golf cart you see bottom centre is 0.93 km (0.58 miles) away.
This view was taken from a small area of woodland called Selsdon Plantation.

Looking across South London from the roof terrace at the Tate Modern during a cold evening.
I'm planning to make a photo video in the next month or so, and upload it to Youtube, if you'd like to watch it, then subscribe to Sights and Scenes. It would be great to see some of you over on Youtube too.
Another one from the top of the Shard in London, this picture was made from 5 shots, focus stacked and aligned in PhotoShop, and tweaked in Lightroom.
I went up the Shard hoping for Tower Bridge to open; it was supposed to a little after sunset but unfortunately for whatever reason it didn't.

when I look at this pic it gives me an association with hope, probably because of majestic architecture or the bright sunlight associated with sunrise
or the real reason is New Year’s Eve and the magical atmosphere when you want to believe in miracles 🙏

St Paul's Cathedral (1675) sits above its surroundings on Ludgate Hill, the highest point of the City of London. This is the view from the roof terrace of the Switch House at the Tate Modern art gallery, a new building in Central London, which opened last year. Behind St Paul's, the Barbican can be seen (the 3 tower blocks).

Protection by Massive attack:
Give me the majestic Architecture of The Old Royal Naval college in Greenwich or St Pauls cathedral any day, but I have grown to love this artistic, futuristic space age, functional protector of London.
The Thames Barrier prevents the floodplain of most of Greater London from being flooded by exceptionally high tides and storm surges moving up from the North Sea. It has been operational since 1984. When needed, it is closed (raised) during high tide; at low tide it can be opened to restore the river's flow towards the sea. Built approximately 3 km (1.9 mi) due east of the Isle of Dogs, its northern bank is in Silvertown in the London Borough of Newham and its southern bank where this photograph was taken is in the New Charlton area of the Royal Borough of Greenwich where both sides of the barrier are flanked by two wonderful unique parks.

The Old Royal Naval College can be seen in the foreground - designed by Wren and built between 1696 - 1712. It was described by UNESCO as - "finest and most dramatically sited architectural and landscape ensemble in the British Isles".
The light has been fantastic lately. All that unsettled weather and showers can, sometimes, be a good thing. In the background we can see City skyscrapers.
