Old Log Cabin; Hwy 190 in Chillicothe; Photo Credit: Belinda Lewis, Licking

The public school on Gabriola Island sponsored a First Nations canoe carving as a way of enlightening the students to the ways and traditions of our First Nations.

The cedar log was found on the island and taken to the schoolgrounds, where a First Nations carver cut the log and started the process of carving the canoe from the log. Modern methods were used to mark the log and a chain saw was used to carve the rough shape. Traditional tools were used to finish the canoe.

I can't recall the last time I saw one of these. They used to be a common sight around here. Seen near Willow Creek Rd in Prescott, Az

I wasn't your typical girly girl growing up. I preferred cars over dolls and give me some Lincoln Logs and I would be content for hours. Of course the same rings true for Lincoln Logs as it does for most things...they just don't make them like they used to. Even this barn, they just don't make em' like they used too.

Taken at the Lincoln Log Cabin museum in Illinois, a living history museum based on the farm of Thomas Lincoln - Abe Lincoln's father - and the farm of his neighbour Stephen Sargent.

This pond really attracted my eye for some reason.

Horse logging in the Mohawk valley, Oregon.

Frank Vaughn with white hat on right. Other two men not labeled.

This is a great photo for examining how the horses were rigged as a team. Each horse is wearing a standard pull collar, the same they would use when pulling any heavy load. If you look closely, can see that each horse is hooked to a separate pulling bar called a whippletree. Each horse also has a strap cross-linking the bit in its mouth with the collar of the horse next to it. This allowed up to four horses wide (any wider and you couldn't pull unless you were on a wide road) to pull a log as a team.

The logs have had their bark removed, or mostly removed (as in the case of hte large log laying cross-wise in the photo). this was done by hand using an axe or bark spud (also called a peeling spud or just a spud). This was make the logs easier to drag and easier to slide on pole roads/chutes.

If you can identify either of the other two men, know the date or the location of this photo, please comment.

Small Logging job we are doing on our ranch

Large log home nestled in the mountains. Log work by Sitka Log Homes.

Trees is a National Trust holiday cottage, a late 1930s log cabin in working woodland near High Wray. I spent a week there.

The timber that built the house came from the surrounding working woodland. It looks out over Lake Windermere - in the evenings there's a fine display of lights from the houses on the east bank. Separated but not isolated.

Ever wonder what it takes to build a log house. These are pictures of the entire construction of our house from October 2006 to Nov 2007. It might take me a few days to put them all up, so if you're looking at these as I am posting them, check back for the rest.

I'll add these all to me log home set, so it might be easier to click that set to the right and go from there (I'll try to get them in order the best I can).

If you have any questions about the construction, feel free to ask. I was there pretty much everday and then I was there everyday after I fired our general contractor and had to finish his work myself.

Feel free to leave comments.

Kenny

"Sorry, it was a long way back to our extraction zone, so I have not had time to log. I am happy too, we are finally getting off Trug. seems that the RA needs us else where.

when we got too our extraction we expected a small cargo to pick us up. we where wrong. seems this war is comming to Trug. a Mass relay ship, picked us up, while it dropped off Tanks, APC's, Siege Tanks and a ton of infantry. I guess the RA had enough of Trugs government. Also the suspicion of them helping UNSD.

after everything was unloaded we where approuched by a high RASF commander. he informed us of our new mission, we where heading to a place called Kol. under the cover of supplies brought in for the forces already there. he asked us a few simple questions about our mission, like had anyone died or was the man dead. we said yes, gave him the cooradantes too the cave and also gave him the account chip. he smiled and walked away.

I guess I had been away too long, becuase I forgot how massive the mass relay ships are. something spanning almost a half mile in length, and a quater mile in width is something one shouldn't forget quickly. with guns that could destroy cities in single shots.

before we entered Cryo, we all sat in the mess hall, us and the APC crew and had a drink. we laughed and chucled at our adventure, that was a few days ago, but now seemed like months. our APC driver informed us that he wouldn't be driving us this time.

I asked him about the planet we where headed too. he just shook his head and smiled. The planet Kol was the Pinical of this War. Fields of green and lush forests are what made most of this planet up. not too mention the huge oceans filled with creatures beyond imagination. from what we have been told. a massive, and I mean massive UNSD control base is there. So the RA decided to take it out. 22 mass relay ships are being sent there. along with 90 battle groupes and about 7000 tanks and APC's. an Invading force no one had ever seen before.

And for good reasons too. If this control base was sieged. we could cut off all communications too the UNSD in this sector, and gather intel on the current locations of them as well.

The only problem is that Kol had been turned into a massive war planet, covered with trenches and bunkers. along with AA guns and everything the UNSD could spare. This was going too be a fight, one that would go down in history books.

we got the que to jump in cryo. we had to stop at a few planets for supplies and forces. so it was going to be in and out of cryo. which really isn't good for the body.

(See links). The first settlers arrived in Elkmont in the mid-1800s. They were homesteaders, hunters, and small-scale loggers, and they formed a community along the Little River. Logging would eventually grow to be a huge industry in town. Lumber from ash, poplar, cherry, and hemlock trees was sent down the river to Knoxville to be processed. Elkmont proper was formally established in 1907.

Elkmont - Roadtrippers.com

Elkmont is a region situated in the upper Little River Valley of the Great Smoky Mountains of Sevier County, in Tennessee. Throughout its history, the valley has been home to a pioneer Appalachian community, a logging town, and a resort community. Have you ever visited the abandoned resort town in the Smoky Mountains? What was once a booming logging camp and resort town for wealthy vacationers slowly became a ghost town. Considered now to be one of the hidden gems in the Smokies, visitors love exploring the abandoned area.

Elkmont - Visit My Smokies

How do I get to Elkmont Ghost Town? Elkmont Ghost Town isn't hard to find! To get there, take US-411 from Gatlinburg to the Sugarlands Visitor Center. Drive toward Cades Cove for about 7 miles until you see a sign for Elkmont Campground. You'll turn here until you see the ranger station about 4 miles down the road. Elkmont is 8 miles / 15 minutes from Gatlinburg.

Elkmont Ghost Town

How Elkmont Became a Ghost Town - When the national park was established in 1934, residents had to decide whether they would sell their homes for full value and relocate right away, or they could sell their properties to the National Park Service for a discounted price and get to stay in their homes for the remainder of their lifetime. Most of the leases expired in 1992, so the Great Smoky Mountains National Park had about 70 historic buildings with no one to maintain them. Because there was no one to take care of the cabins, they started to deteriorate. The large number of abandoned buildings eventually led to the town being called “Elkmont Ghost Town.”
