I am in the process of renovating a space in Detroit's Eastern Market to live in. It started off as a dusty, completely unfinished cube. Goal is to be done by January 1st.
The former School for the Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA) is being renovated into an apartment building called Alumni Lofts. The surrounding Ziegler Park and Cutter Playground are also being renovated.
There was almost no insulation in the loft when we bought the house. In the central section, we installed beams perpendicular to the existing beams, laid insulation between them and in the rest of the loft, and boarded over the newly laid beams to provide loads of storage space.
The insulation made the bedrooms feel noticeably warmer in winter. Installing central heating made more difference though!
Installing the perpendicular beams was a pain as the existing beams were all slightly warped and variable thicknesses. We ended up padding most of the crossing points with several small wedges of hardboard (from an old sheet found in the loft) which seemed to work well.
