This Monday for a change I thought I would post a nature shot
A couple buffalo males fighting for dominance in the group.
They locked horns and butted heads …hmm, sounds like politicians.
So today’s HBM stands for Happy Bison Monday!
Thought I'd try it in b&w..

A lock is a device used for raising and lowering boats, ships and other watercraft between stretches of water of different levels on river and canal waterways. The distinguishing feature of a lock is a fixed chamber in which the water level can be varied. (thanks Wiki)
Zoos have evolved over the years to make the life of an animal less and less traumatic, although it is still a prison for entertainment. Unlike those parks where the work to preserve species and recover those at risk of extinction seems to me to be an extremely important social and environmental job. Seeing that there are still zoos where you see that it is simply a prison makes me sad and angry, seeing the aggressive attitude of many animals in these zoos already gives you an idea of the discomfort they feel there and in those conditions. I have mixed feelings, but I am clear that if they gave me the option to choose, I would release them all. I dedicate this series to all those animals that in one way or another live in a prison, or simply have their freedom stolen from them.
Los zoo durante años han evolucionado para que cada vez sea menos traumática la vida de un animal, aunque sigue siendo una cárcel para entretener. A diferencia de aquellos parques donde el trabajo para preservar especies y recuperar aquellas en riesgo de extinción me parece un trabajo social y ambiental sumamente importante. Ver que todavía existan zoo donde ves que simplemente es una cárcel me genera tristeza y rabia, ver la actitud agresiva de muchos animales en estos zoo ya te dan a entender el malestar que tienen estando allí y en esas condiciones. Tengo mis sentimientos encontrados, pero tengo claro que si me dan la opción a elegir, los soltaría a todos.. Esta serie se la dedico a todos aquellos animales que de una u otra manera viven en una cárcel, o simplemente les roban su libertad.
Lock gates on the Forth and Clyde Canal, near Falkirk. I'm always impressed with these feats of historic engineering (even more impressive when you see a series of stepped locks, like Neptune's Staircase), allowing boats and barges to move onto a different height level of the canal. The water constantly sluicing over the top of the gates was just crying out for black and white pics.
Sometimes graffiti isn't always enjoyable but this spray created an interesting shape and colour. I returned to take another image a few days later and it had been 'repaired' so this is never to be repeated!

It was a beautiful autumn day to shoot some Polaroids at the lock.
While not accurate the title seemed to work better with horns than antlers.....more commonly used, for many reasons.
These 2 elk bulls put on a good show. More in play and practice then harming each other. Prep for future battles to come over lady elk against bigger bulls.

This image was the only heavily edited picture in my new series, Fourth Wall. Because I couldn't afford so many keys, I used five and transformed them into 4,000.
I lith printed this photo, many moons ago. I didn't however scan it, or print it in b&w. Was curious to see how it came out. Quite like it.
This was developed when I started experimenting with Moersch Tanol as a film developer. My main problem with it was, I didn't have a clue as to what I was doing! Did get some nice negatives though. Might experiment with it again in the future :)

A love lock in black and white that I saw on Monteliusvägen in Stockholm. I wonder if they're still together?
Triptych of a railway arch lock-up door in London. I'm not sure what originally attracted me to it; the locks, the graffiti or the layers of old paint. I thought it had a Jackson Pollock feel to it so I have attempted to create three images that could either stand alone or together as a triptych.
Castlefield, Manchester
When the Rochdale Canal was built it terminated at a basin at Dale Street, Piccadilly, because the Duke of Bridgewater would not agree to the Rochdale linking into the Bridgewater Canal. However when proposals were made to extend the Manchester Bolton and Bury Canal past Rochdale to Sladen and on to Sowerby Bridge, he realised that trans-Pennine traffic would by-pass his canal with a great loss of potential revenue.
He changed his mind and allowed the Rochdale Canal Company to construct the link, which consisted of nine locks over a mile and a half. He did, however, insist that his own workers constructed the final lock linking into his canal at Castlefield, and that he maintained control of this lock, which is still known as the Duke's Lock or more commonly as Lock 92.
I like the way all the iron gets the same color after being exposed to the elements for some time, even the padlock.
