Inside the lock works are the culverts and sluices where the water flows from the upstream water level into the lock. We could've gone deeper into the lock, but for lack of boots/waders. Next time!

Lock No58 on a restored section of the Chesterfield Canal at Retford.

Built in 1777 the Chesterfield Canal known locally as 'Cuckoo Dyke', is widely recognised as one of the most beautiful and varied waterways in England, runing for 46 miles from the River Trent to the middle of Chesterfield, linking the counties of Nottinghamshire, South Yorkshire and Derbyshire.

After the canal was formally closed in 1961 it is thanks to the Chesterfield Canal Society formed in 1976 and since 1997 the Chesterfield Canal Trust that this canal is mostly all navigable and with us today.
