Picture taken at Everglades National Park (FL, USA)

Everglades National Park is a national park in the U.S. state of Florida that protects the southern 25 percent of the original Everglades. It is the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States, and is visited by one million people each year.It is the third-largest national park in the lower 48 states after Death Valley National Park and Yellowstone National Park. The park has been declared an International Biosphere Reserve, a World Heritage Site, and a Wetland of International Importance, only one of three locations in the world to appear on all three lists.

Unlike most U.S. national parks, Everglades National Park was created to protect a fragile ecosystem instead of safeguarding a unique geographic feature. The Everglades are a slow-moving river originating in Lake Okeechobee, fed by the Kissimmee River, and flowing southwest at about .25 miles (0.40 km) per day into Florida Bay. The wetlands in the park are an interconnected network of marshland and forest ecosystems that are maintained by natural forces. Thirty-six species designated as threatened or protected live in the park, including the Florida panther, the American crocodile, and the West Indian manatee. The park protects the largest U.S. wilderness area east of the Mississippi River,[5] is the most significant breeding ground for tropical wading birds in North America, and contains the largest mangrove ecosystem in the western hemisphere.More than 350 species of birds, 300 species of fresh and saltwater fish, 40 species of mammals, and 50 species of reptiles live within Everglades National Park. All of South Florida's fresh water, stored in the Biscayne Aquifer, is recharged by the park.

Although humans have lived in the Everglades for thousands of years, not until 1882 did the region begin to be drained for agricultural or residential use. In the 20th century the water flow from Lake Okeechobee was controlled and diverted to the explosive growth of the South Florida metropolitan area. The park was established in 1934 to protect the quickly vanishing Everglades and dedicated in 1947, the same year massive building projects across South Florida began to restrict the natural flow of water. The ecosystems in Everglades National Park have suffered significantly from human activity, and the repair and restoration of the Everglades is a politically charged issue in South Florida.

Day 2

In UNICEF's effort to build back better the lives of Acehnese localized Integrated Health Centers were built through out the province under the Health Units program. Known as Posyandu Plus, the health centers provide pre-natal training, check ups and immunization for pregnant mothers as well as health services for children under five. Built upon a preexisting government program, the Posyandu Plus activities have built upon institutional knowledge for greater sustainability and effectiveness.

At the Posyandu Plus Ie Masen, in Banda Aceh the monthly children's chek up's were underway, involving children under the age of 5. Monitoring weight, height, and health of the children monthly helps in the long term development and well being while vitamin A drops and immunizations help keep the kids healthy. Along the way the mothers receive training and are given the opportunity to allow their children to socialize.

We interviewed Sanawiyah, 28, and her daughter Shafira, 10 months. Sanawiyah is a survivor of the tsunami and moved to the village of Ie Masen, Banda Aceh after her home was destroyed in tsunami. (after a two minute interview we realized she wasn't going to talk…but at least there is one nice moment where she is smiling)

Salwati,25, is an Early Child Development Care Health Cadre trained by UNICEF and now working at the UNICEF built Posyandu Plus in Ie Masen, Banda Aceh. The two children on her lap were born shortly after the tsunami in emergency camps. (left) Misrina Huwaida was born 13th March 2005 and (right) Bunga Mafirah was born 15th April 2005.

Diasabled since birth Ainul Mardiah and her daughter one-and-half year old daughter Zaidah, travel from a neighboring village to participate in the monthly health check up's at the Ie Masen Posyandu Plus in Banda Aceh. Birds. Crowned Lapwing. Madikwe Game Reserve. South Africa. Nov/2020

Crowned Lapwing

The crowned lapwing (Vanellus coronatus), or crowned plover, is a bird of the lapwing subfamily that occurs contiguously from the Red Sea coast of Somalia to southern and southwestern Africa. It is an adaptable and numerous species, with bold and noisy habits. It is related to the more localized black-winged and Senegal lapwings, with which it shares some plumage characteristics.

The crowned lapwing is easily recognized by its combination of brown and white colours, with most tellingly, a black crown intersected by an annular white halo. Adults are noisy and conspicuous.

Males measure on average 3% larger than females. Juveniles are dull versions of adults, vermiculated on the wings and mantle, the legs yellowy rather than red and the bill lacking the red base.

Madikwe Game Reserve

The Madikwe Game Reserve is a protected area in South Africa, part of the latest park developments in the country. Named after the Madikwe or Marico River, on whose basin it is located, it was opened in 1991 and comprises 750 km2 of bushland north of the small town Groot-Marico up to the Botswana border.

Madikwe Game Reserve lies 90 km north of Zeerust on what used to be farm land, but owing to the poor soil type, farming was not that successful. After extensive research, the South African Government found that this land would best be utilised as a provincial park, to economically uplift this otherwise rather poor area.

The process reintroducing wildlife to the area began in 1992 under the codename Operation Phoenix which relocated entire breeding herds of elephants, Cape buffaloes, south-central black rhinos and southern white rhinos along with various species of antelopes. Following Operation Phoenix, Madikwe has also successfully reintroduce rarer predatory species such as lions, cheetahs, spotted hyenas and Cape wild dogs bringing the total large mammal population of the reserve to over 10 000. There are currently more than 60 species of mammal in the park.

Reserva do Madikwe

Racism: The Elephant in the Room (or Park)

Seattle, Washington, August 17, 2015 - People are invited to participatein a public interactive art installation to expose racism as the"elephant in the room".

On Monday, August 17, 2015, from 11:00 am to 1:30 pm, at Westlake Parkin Seattle, the public is invited to join us in learning about racismand white privilege through visually rich, interactive art andengagement in positive dialog and seek skills for addressinginstitutional racism.

At 2 pm, the action moves from Westlake to the City Council chambers. There, activists will challenge City Council members to combatinstitutional racism by protecting Hookah Lounges, predominantly ownedby people of color and currently under attack. They will also call onthe Council to reject zoning that will permit the construction of anexpanded juvenile detention center, misleadingly called the "King CountyFamily and Children's Justice Center," stop the city-sponsoredgentrification of areas in the city that are home to people of color, and to end police brutality.

This interactive art exhibit and challenge to the City Council arecoming from a collection of activists who are from the Pacific Northwestand around the country that met at a Backbone Campaign's Localize This! Action Camp. As a group, we are predominantly white activists who are looking inwardsand reaching out to our peers to join us in this action. We arechallenging ourselves and others to move beyond denial and defensivenessto commit to taking one concrete step towards racial justice and toshare our challenge.

My Memorial Weekend Three Days in the Woods……..Alone…….

But I’m Never Alone……My Mother Watches Over Me…….

The Great Egret (Ardea alba), also known as the Great White Egret or Common Egret or (now not in use) Great White Heron, and called kōtuku in New Zealand, is a large egret. Distributed across most of the tropical and warmer temperate regions of the world, in southern Europe and Asia it is rather localized. It is sometimes confused with the Great White Heron in Florida, which is a white morph of the closely related Great Blue Heron (A. herodias). Note however that the name Great White Heron has occasionally been used to refer to the Great Egret.

The Great Egret is a large bird with all-white plumage that can reach one meter in height and weigh up to 950 g. It is thus only slightly smaller than the Great Blue or Grey Heron (A. cinerea). Apart from size, the Great Egret can be distinguished from other white egrets by its yellow bill and black legs and feet, though the bill may become darker and the lower legs lighter in the breeding season. In breeding plumage, delicate ornamental feathers are borne on the back. Males and females are identical in appearance; juveniles look like non-breeding adults.

It has a slow flight, with its neck retracted. This is characteristic of herons and bitterns, and distinguishes them from storks, cranes, ibises and spoonbills, which extend their necks in flight.

The Great Egret is not normally a vocal bird; at breeding colonies, however, it often gives a loud croaking cuk cuk cuk.

Systematics and taxonomy

Like all egrets, it is a member of the heron family, Ardeidae. Traditionally classified with the storks in the Ciconiiformes, the Ardeidae might in fact be closer relatives of pelicans and belong in the Pelecaniformes instead. The Great Egret – unlike the typical egrets – does not belong to the genus Egretta but together with the great herons is today placed in Ardea. In the past, however, it was sometimes placed in Egretta or separated in a monotypic genus Casmerodius.

Subspecies

There are four subspecies in various parts of the world, which differ but little. Differences are bare part coloration in the breeding season and size; the largest subspecies is A. a. modesta.

Parent on nest in a tree with chicks at Morro Bay, USA.

The Great Egret is partially migratory, with northern hemisphere birds moving south from areas with cold winters. It breeds in colonies in trees close to large lakes with reed beds or other extensive wetlands. It builds a bulky stick nest.

Although generally a very successful species with a large and expanding range, the Great Egret is highly endangered in New Zealand, with only one breeding site at Okarito Lagoon. In North America, large numbers of Great Egrets were killed around the end of the 19th century so that their plumes could be used to decorate hats. Numbers have since recovered as a result of conservation measures. Its range has expanded as far north as southern Canada. However, in some parts of the southern United States, its numbers have declined due to habitat loss. Nevertheless, it adapts well to human habitation and can be readily seen near wetlands and bodies of water in urban and suburban areas. In 1953 the Great Egret in flight was chosen as the symbol of the National Audubon Society, which was formed in part to prevent the killing of birds for their feathers.

They are Protected in Australia under the National Parks and Wildlife Act, 1974.

The Great Egret is one of the species to which the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) applies.

Food

The Great Egret feeds in shallow water or drier habitats, spearing insects, rodents, small reptiles, fish and amphibians with its long, sharp bill. They have even been observed to feed on ducklings. It will often wait motionless for prey, or slowly stalk its victim. It is a common species, usually easily seen.

Though it might appear that they feed on the parasites off buffalos, they actually feed on leaf hoppers, grass hoppers and other insects which are stirred open as buffalos move about in water.

The Great Egret is depicted on the reverse side of a 5-Brazilian Reais banknote and on the reverse side of a New Zealand $2 coin.

Backbone Campaign greeted President Obama in Seattle for a Democratic fundraiser with giant banners above his motorcade and life-like representations of the Washington State democratic delegation.

Simultaneously, people outrage by representatives not yet outright opposing the TPP packed the entrance to the Washington Convention Center where the fundraiser was being held and surrounding streets. A Star Wars themed Trans-Pacific Partnership Death Star was inflated and Rebel Alliance Starfighters standing up for sovereignty, human and workers rights, safe climate, affordable medicine and more greeted the democratic donor base as they entered.

We wanted there to be NO mistake - We the People consider a vote for the TPP a catastrophic, unforgivable BETRAYAL. An unaccountable vote planned for the post election Congressional session would add a cowardly insult to the injury of this disastrous corporate coup that shifts power away from governments to transnational corporations and the greedy who hide behind them. Washington State's Congressional delegation, especially Senators Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell, and Congressmembers Denny Heck, Rick Larson, Susan DelBene, Rick Larsen and Derek Kilmer need to know they will NOT be able to show their faces in public if they BETRAY the people they are supposed to serve.

Obama's visit occurred during Backbone Campaign's 8th annual Localize This! Action Camp. Thus, we jumped at the chance to put artful activism lessons into action. Enjoy pictures and video provided by Andrew Sigman, Joyce Marin, John P Duffy and Daniel Lee. #FLUSHTHETPP #TPPisBetrayal

G, Unrooted Neighbor-joining tree of the entire amino acid sequences of rice REM V proteins. H, Unrooted Neighbor-joining tree of entire amino acid sequences of rice REM VIII proteins. I, Unrooted Neighbor-joining tree of entire amino acid sequences of rice REM XIII proteins. Bootstrap values from 1,000 replicates were used to assess the robustness of the trees. Bootstrap values >40 are shown. The scale bar represents a 0.1 estimated amino acid substitution per residue. The phylogenetic tree and exon/intron structure with domain localization of each B3 domain type are shown. Each colored box represent one B3 type domain, as indicate in the figure. The different colours of REM B3 domains per protein were based on different class found in phylogenetic analysis of REM B3 domains showed in Figure 2B, 2C, 2D. MIPS Arabidopsis thaliana and Orysa sativa database was used for exon/intron structure information [87]. As it is not possible to construct phylogenetic tree with less than 4 genes, specific classes with few members of classes were not showed in this figure such as AtREM X and OsREM XII.

FRK.MOD was a public installation that explored the sounds of localized radio transmission. Six radio transmitters were mounted on telephone poles in Millvale, PA, a borough of Pittsburgh. Each transmitter was paired with an MP3 players which contained an originally composed piece of audio and transmitted this audio on the same frequency. The listener was meant to wear a pair of radio receiver headphones, receiving on the same frequency as the transmitters, and walk down the street. As the listener moves between the transmitters, the signals will compete to be received. The result of this interference is a compelling and disorienting sonic experience.

The composed audio was inspired by the science of radio and the propagation of waves in the natural world. Frequency modulation synthesis as well as a technique to step through one waveform using the amplitude of another were used to represent the relationship between the carrier frequency and the modulator frequency, the basis of radio. The audio also used radio samples captured by placing contact microphones on the beams of a bridge. These sounds mimic qualities of the interference between the transmitters, creating elements of continuity for the listener.
