Localized thunderstorm in Lost Hills as we were passing through -- very humid and close.

This panorama was taken from a parking lot in Amherst NY about 10 miles north of the storm. This storm was fascinating. It was so tightly localized to south Buffalo and was 20 miles or so wide. Outside of the zone (under the clouds see above) the weather was sunny and pleasant, although very windy. That wind was the driving force of the snow. The wind was so straight and strong that it created a line, like a conveyor belt picking up moisture from Lake Erie and dropping on South Buffalo. Locals know this weather pattern as "Lake Effect Snow" and I guess the nation now knows that term as well. Lake Effect Snow is common occurrence up here. Moisture from the lake gets picked up and brought ashore where it is driven up high into the atmosphere where it condenses and falls as snow. Lake Effect snow comes and goes all winter. It can be a few minutes of flakes or a blizzard as seen in the recent storm. Although as a passionate lover of Buffalo I always find it necessary to let people know that Buffalo is FAR from the snow and cold capital of the world. People jokingly ask me if we have snow shoes in July (answer is NO). I think the best description of our weather is that it changes on a dime. It can be sunny and mild and a few hours later snowing a blizzard and then as fast as it starts it can blow away. Winter temperatures can get into the minuses but I have also seen 60 degree days in January. Occasionally the winds and moisture align just right and produce a storm like that seen on November 14.

This picture says it all for me. The antenna system was fixed, the weather was right, and I was ready. Here FC 98 is doing a low pass on the Localizer backcourse. To check the system out, we had to have clear enough days that the aircraft could see all the terrain around him, yet still fly in on instruments only. He's checking the validity of the signals that the system is sending him. Mt Frosty, Baldy and rough terrain are all around this approach. In bad weather it makes a highway in the sky to bring the aircraft down to the runway and on center. But before I can bless it, we check it out completely. 10 hours later, I was home in North Pole.

I love to see small localized ecosystems. In rain forests a single tree, or even a branch, can harbor an amazingly complex web of interconnected organisms. These were in a Costa Rican cloud forest near Monteverde. There was the possibility of taking a zip-line tour in this area, but we opted for the swinging bridges. I'm glad we did. It was quieter, slower, and less crowded, and we were able to stand and watch sights like these.

Several decades ago Costa Rica underwent a violent revolution and subsequently decided to eliminate their military. Upon hearing this, a group of Quaker families wishing to step away from the military draft in the US went there to begin a community in a country without an army. The Quaker community eventually started a dairy, but were concerned about protecting their watershed. So they protected what is now known as the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. Next door is the State-owned Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve. This photo was taken in the latter.

Eastern Tailed Blue - Cupido comyntas – is a native butterfly that is very common in the eastern United States and southeastern Canada, scarcer and more localized in the western U.S. and Mexico and south to Costa Rica. It often visits flowers in gardens, parks, roadsides, forest paths, and meadows and is frequently seen on lawns. It flies spring to fall and often produces 3 broods. It is the only tailed blue butterfly (tribe Polyommatini) in the east, though the tails may be short or missing on worn individuals. The hindwing has one to three orange spots near the base of the tail. The male is bright blue above, the female mostly blackish blue with blue basally in the spring. Both have one or two orange spots near the tail when seen from above. 23-28 mm wingspan in United States; 16-26 mm in Canada. Tribe Polyommatini are all very small butterflies, mostly blue above though the females of many species are browner. In general the fieldmarks of these species are on the underside of their wings. They tend to fly slow, with lots of up-and-down fluttering. They may rub their hindwings together while perched. Males often gather in “puddle parties” around wet soil. Larval foodplants include the flowers and seeds of many legumes including White Clover (Trifolium repens), Red Clover (T. pratense), and Cow Vetch (Vicia cracca). . Males patrol near the host plants during daylight hours. Females lay eggs on flower buds; caterpillars eat buds, flowers, and seeds. This butterfly has a low flight and a short proboscis, thus is found at flowers close to the ground which are open or short-tubed. These include white sweet clover, shepherd's needle, wild strawberry, winter cress, cinquefoils, asters, and others. Unlike most butterflies, this species has thrived where its habitat has been encroached upon by human activities. It is common along freshly mowed roadsides, flying to puddles. Western Tailed Blue (Cupido amyntula) is larger, has fewer wing markings, and is paler beneath. It occurs throughout most of the western half of North America. This is the only other species of this genus in the New World though 16 additional species can be found in the old world. Jim P.
