This panorama was taken from River Road in Tonawanda NY. This storm was fascinating. It was so tightly localized to south Buffalo and was 20 miles or so wide. Outside of the zone (under the clouds see above) the weather was sunny and pleasant, although very windy, which was driving that flow of moisture from Lake Erie to the shore. Locals know this weather pattern as "Lake Effect Snow" and I guess the nation now knows that term as well. It comes and goes all winter as moisture is swept up from Lake Erie. As that moisture laden air hits shore it is driven up high into the atmosphere where it condenses and falls as snow. Lake Effect snow can be a few minutes of flakes or a blizzard as seen in the recent storm. Although as a passionate lover of Buffalo I always it necessary to let people know that Buffalo is FAR from the snow and cold capital of the world. People jokingly ask me if we have snow shoes in July (answer is NO). I think the best description of our weather is that it changes on a dime. It can be sunny and mild and a few hours later snowing a blizzard and then as fast as it starts it can blow away. Winter temperatures can get into the minuses but I have also seen 60 degree days in January. Occasionally the winds and moisture align just right and produce a storm like that seen on November 14.

In northwestern England, there is an extremely localized musical phenomenon. It's called Donk, and it's basically the best worst thing we've ever heard. Think cheesy rave music with bleeps and bloops put on top (these are the "donks") and the UK equivalent of a trailer park boy band rapping over it. Sounds amazing, huh? Our five-part Donk-umentary gets to the heart of the craze and examines this odd regional mania that most chaps in southern England don't even know about.
The Blackout Crew pose in the Harmony Center, where they formed and became the most popular group in the Donk party scene of northwestern England. Their song "Put a Donk on it" has been viewed on YouTube almost four million times.

Although very localized to very south central Montana in open dry settings, Astragalus hyalinus (the bluish green mats) occurs on a diversity of substrates and in different sagebrush communities, including those dominated by Wyoming big sagebrush, black sagebrush, and birdfoot sagebrush, Artemisia pedatifida, as shown here. Eriogonum pauciflorum, Stipa comata, Platyschkuhria integrifolia, and Machaeranthera grindelioides are also common in this view. This site is in the sagebrush steppe just to the east of Warren Montana.
Belgian artist Lawrence Malstaf will unleash a cyclone right in the middle of Automobil Forum. Rousing and hypnotizing at the same time, “Nemo Observatory” puts installation visitors under its spell. Using five fans and a walk-through PVC cylinder, Lawrence Malstaf creates a localized tornado in which the installation visitor occupies the eye of the storm. Nevertheless, the effect is incredibly calming. The chaotic spectacle suddenly becomes a uniform, almost hypnotic sensory impression.
Lawrence Malstaf was honored with a 2009 Golden Nica in the Prix Ars Electronica’s Interactive Art category. The Belgian artist began his career by studying industrial design and then worked in the theater. His efforts evoke multi-sensory physical experiences that are by no means limited to the audiovisual. His current work occupies a place at the nexus of design and stage set design.

When you type an address or zip code into Everyblock, the website presents you with a variety of localized information. You can find up-to-date news items, restaurant reviews or even CraigsList postings all laid out on a map. You can even subscribe, so updates for an area of interest get sent to you.
They also offer a selection of localized government data, such as building violations and restaurant inspections. But this information comes from publicly accessible databases. And as the folks at Everyblock seek to expand the available information on their site, they’ve begun reaching out to the city and other governments to provide more information than they can scrape from the Web. But the site’s founder, Adrian Holovaty, told the Fimoculous blog, “We’ve run into many roadblocks there, from the political to the technical.”
Currently, they are focusing on getting crime data for New York City. Everyblock is the direct decedent of Chicagocrime.org, so it may be no surprise that they start here. They haven’t been having luck getting that data from the NYPD, however. “I have attempted to get incident level crime data from the Police Department, but was denied,” says Daniel O’Neil, Everyblock’s resident People Person.
No comment was available from the police by the time this post went up.
The CompStat program has gained national accolades for mapping out crimes. But unlike Chicaco’s CLEAR system, the CompStat statistics are not released to the public on a block by block level.
“We commend the Chicago police for doing that,” says O’Neil, “We think it should be the standard”
Everyblock’s next step is a Freedom of Information Law request.

The fungal pathogen Phomopsis causes a localized canker in ‘ōhi‘a, Metrosideros polymorpha. Visual symptoms include branch mortality and swelling and cracking of bark at the infection point. Symptoms are similar to symptoms of Rapid ‘Ōhi‘a Death (caused by Ceratocystis spp.), but Phomopsis canker usually just kills smaller branches and not the whole tree. Ceratocystis infection typically does not produce branch swelling and cracked bark. Branches infected by Phomopsis may be pruned off, and in areas where Ceratocystis is present it is recommended to use a pruning paint or wound sealer on the wounds.

Small Group Discussion: Localizing Agricultural Value Chains for Shared Prosperity
The world’s agricultural economy exceeds $2 trillion, yet much of the production, processing, and manufacturing for high value food products that could be energizing developing economies instead takes place in developed countries, reducing opportunities for local livelihood improvement and economic growth. Some companies have identified an opportunity to strengthen their own businesses and invest in local livelihoods by keeping high-value processing and manufacturing in the low-income countries where their agricultural products are sourced. Others are localizing their supply chains, ensuring that food products they sell within developing countries are made using locally sourced ingredients. These trends can empower smallholder farmers, strengthen small- and medium-sized enterprises, and mitigate the climate footprint resulting from the transportation of goods across the globe, while at the same time reducing companies’ sourcing and production costs. To ensure that localized supply chains and value chains can function sustainably, businesses must cultivate ecosystems that support this type of business environment and the human capital needed for growth and prosperity.
In this session, participants will:
• Explore the economic, environmental, and social opportunities that can be achieved through local value chains and the partnerships that can make these possible.
• Examine case studies of successful efforts to localize supply chains serving domestic markets and create value chains in low-income countries to serve global markets.
