Yet another architecture style in balconies- love the intricate work on those lintels above the windows. We are now on our Amritsar heritage walk down the narrow side streets and by-lanes of the Amritsar old city quarter. But for our guide we may have missed many of these architectural gems. All these gems are on the first floor balconies of the old structures. So one has to look up and around to spot them. As a lay person or tourist, most would simply walk on, looking straight ahead, (and dodging those crazy motor scooter riders zipping through the contested streets at full throttle, finger pressed firmly on the horn). Our guide was lamenting that most of these old structures appear rather decrepit- we were hoping, along with him, that they would be retained and not knocked down mercilessly in the name of redevelopment. Refuse apparently left by the landlord after an enforced termination of lease. Southwark Council will not remove as it is "not on the public highway". Camberwell Councillor Kevin Ahern is on the case as of Friday 22 April 2011.

Our Amritsar heritage walk is almost over now, and as we follow our guide through a maze of narrow lanes and by-lanes, we come across this sign pointing to the Harmandir Sahib/ Golden Temple in one of these back alleys. The entrance was hardly noticeable, and comparison to the gorgeous clock tower entrance we had used the previous night,
this entrance was almost inconspicuous and nondescript! Interesting sign though! (Amritsar, Punjab, northern India, Nov. 2017)

The Souk is the great draw for tourists, including tourists from other parts of Morocco. But these smaller places are where the locals buy goods and services.
Here is another of those gorgeous marble fronted stores outside the Harmandir Sahib/ Golden Temple which sells religious doo dads and stuff related to the temple and which are important for followers of the Sikh religion. More notes in the next caption. Only for the record, we refer to it as the Sikh religion, but the Sikhs themselves do not consider Sikhism to be a religion- it's more a way of life. Anyway, not relevant to the caption, but just for the record. (Amritsar, Punjab, northern India, Nov. 2017)
A tourist poses by a 'bhangra' dance diorama on the pedestrianized street in Amritsar leading to the Harmandir Sahib/ Golden Temple. There was quite a crowd moving towards the temple, with people from all over the country, and on the way, this diorama had become a tourist attraction in itself and an essential photo point. Notes about the bhagra (sometimes also spelled bhangda) appear in the next caption. (Amritsar, Punjab, northern India, Nov. 2017)
It was difficult to get the place free for a selfie, as people were lining up for a selfie. As a result, here are two groups of tourists having their selfies taken at the same time! This large diorama depicts the main Punjabi folk dance for men, called the Bhangra or Bhangda. Although primarily a form of traditional folk dance, Bhangra is associated with fast moves and a terrific pace and beat, due to which it has become immensely popular all over India. Some regional language film songs in the local languages elsewhere in India are also sometimes set to the Bhangra beat- such is the popularity of this dance form. The dances are typically performed at times of celebration, such as Harvest (Visakhi), Weddings, Melas (Festivals) like Lohri, Jashan-e-Baharan (Spring Festival) etc., at which everyone is encouraged to dance. This is the last of the architecture style shots- and this one has a distinct Victorian theme. I decided not to point my camera upwards any more after this, as I think I'd got enough shots of the erstwhile architecture styles. Most of these historic structures were in shambles and crumbling. They are sure to come under the demolition ball sooner or later- in fact we observed that many of these historic structures have already been replaced with more modern structures. My guide, and we agreed whole heartedly, lamented that at least some of these historic structures should be saved for future generations. We did see one modern building with the historic balconies re-installed on it, so we hope that is going to be the trend of things to come. (Amritsar, Punjab, northern India, Nov. 2017)
Opposite was another chap, sitting almost in the middle of the narrow lane. He is seen here finishing another religious doo dad in brass.
Looks like something which will be installed atop a building, maybe a steeple. Maybe it is for use in the Harmandir Sahib/ Golden Temple itself. Like the others, this man was also completely absorbed in his work and did not bother with us crazy tourists gawking at him at work while snapping away with our cameras. Now that's dedication for you. (Amritsar, Punjab, northern India, Nov. 2017)
A collection of miniature model cars is neatly arranged on display in a toy shop. Various colors, including orange, white, and black, are featured, appealing to collectors and children alike.

Another of the historic buildings in the Amritsar old city quarter features this ornate Rajasthan style sculpture on this ancient doorway. The building appeared to be abandoned, it was empty at any rate, and we were hoping that it would not be knocked down soon. It is built in the style of a typically Rajasthani haveli (stately mansion). And what made it more fascinating is that the intricate carving is not on stone, but on bricks! Individual bricks are carved painstakingly and then meticulously put together to form a complete piece of carving which looks as though it was carved on a single block of stone! Fascinating- a close view of this appears immediately after this. (Amritsar, Punjab, northern India, Nov. 2017)

We are moving into the bowels of the congested old city of Amritsar now, and so our heritage walk commences here in right earnest. Some of the heritage structures are unfortunately being knocked down and rebuilt but I was fascinated by how that building appears to be literally crushed between the two newer ones! The Amritsar heritage walk is a guided tour deep inside the narrow lanes and by- lanes of the 400 year old city of Amritsar. One gets to see Katras, Akharas Bungas, Havelis, and Hatties. (these are various names for types of traditional architecture- I don't know what exactly they are myself, barring the haveli, which is a large stately mansion). The walk takes you back in the time as you witness town planning of olden days. You can also see traditional trade and crafts being practiced in the same place and in the same manner as has been done for centuries. It is however, the famous intricately carved wooden facades of many of the older buildings that really fascinate you This walk is an opportunity to feel part of this beautiful, sacred and yet vibrant city.
