I shot the Dixie Rock 20 indoor climbing event this past weekend here in Chapel Hill. From the two day event, which included both amateur and professaional competitions, I was there for a few hours at lunchtime, catching a lot of the locals. Two shots from the assignment made into the paper with this article: Dixie Rock celebrates 20 years and climbing. More details and a blog post to come shortly.

Everyone was climbing the walls at the Chapel Hill Community Center on Saturday during the Dixie Rock 20 Climbing Competition. The competition, geared toward all climbing skill levels, include several youth categories for ages 5 and older.

On Saturday, March 26, 2011, Novella Carpenter, author of Farm City: The Education of an Urban Farmer addressed over 100 people at the Hayward Public Library, for the Library’s first Book-to-Action program.

Read "Urban Farmer Tells it All in Her 'Farm City' Book" in Hayward Daily Review, March 28, 2011:

www.insidebayarea.com/dailyreview/localnews/ci_17714175

Farm City is a national best-selling memoir about Carpenter's experience running an urban farm in an abandoned lot in downtown Oakland. On her small plot, Carpenter not only grows a wide variety of vegetables, but also raises bees, goats, rabbits, geese, and other farmyard animals.

The Book-to-Action program gathers community members to discuss a timely book, meet the author, then volunteer for a local organization that implements the ideas you have read about. Download the Book-to-Action brochure at:

Novella Carpenter writes about urban farming and sustainable food production for various publications, including her blog, Ghost Town Farm. She studied with Michael Pollan at U.C. Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism, and has written for Mother Jones, Salon and SF Gate. Farm City was named a best book in 2009 by the New York Times and other media.

Pastor Kimberly D. Moore stands at the pulpit at Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church in Gastonia NC, on Sunday December 21, 2008. Moore is one of the first female Senior Pastors at a Missionary Baptist Church in the region.

Since traffic on 101 has been getting worse--and since it gets ridiculously backed up on Friday afternoons before 3, I decided to leave work a bit early on Friday.

Around University or so, traffic came to a standstill. At 1:30, this could mean only one thing--an accident.

Benson called around this time, and I told him how aggravating it was leaving early and getting stuck behind an accident--especially, I said, because most of the time accidents are caused by "someone doing something stupid."

Traffic inched along, and I felt more and more agitated. After a while, I tried to do the whole "think of the big picture and relax" thing, and it worked for a time at least.

I called 511, but it just said that there was a "slowdown" in the area, but no accident report. I saw a couple of cop cars pass on the shoulder, so assumed 511 just hadn't been updated yet. Then I passed one of the traffic conditions signs, and it indicated that the two left lanes were closed. Shortly after that, this Caltrans truck arrived and started laying down cones.

It was interesting to watch it. The truck would slowly edge over, with a guy on the back putting cones farther and farther into the lane.

Finally, I could see the police lights near San Antonio Road, and became happy I was reaching the incident--whatever it was.

As I passed the scene, I looked over and saw a yellow tarp over a bulge on the ground. I knew it could only mean there had been a fatality. On NPR, the traffic report was starting to call it a "major accident," but still no reports of fatalities, though.

When I got home, the traffic reports online were still just calling it a major incident--but on the front page of the Merc, I found out what had actually happened. A woman had jumped off the San Antonio overpass onto the highway, killing her and causing a seven car accident. At the time, there were no reports on whether a car had struck the woman, but later on the report was updated to indicate that a driver did strike her.

It's odd for me to be so close to death outside of the formal confines of a funeral. That I couldn't see the body--and only the yellow tarp over the bulge--made it a bit sanitized, but powerful nonetheless.

That this was a suicide also made me feel guilty about (and put into perspective) my feelings of agitation at being stuck in traffic.

At the same time, a somewhat orthoganal feeling of anger at the woman who jumped crept in. I wasn't angry at her for causing the backup. I was angry at the idea that she would jump onto the freeway, either causing injury to someone else or causing someone else to strike her--and lead to emotional trauma in that unfortunate driver.

Thank you Mayor Nickles,

You are a genius, I can not believe we are so blessed to have you as our Mayor! I love not having clear roads, I love not being able to get anywhere, and I especially love getting stuck when I do try to get some place.

It really is a good thing we did not salt the roads this year, we all know have devastating a few days worth of salt would be to our delicate ecosystem..Who needs to go to work, or go shopping, or go to the store, or get gas? Oh wait a minute, we can't get gas because they are out! Nevermind all of that, lets eat some salmon!

Oh and bravo for utilizing those snow plows with rubber tipped blades, those sure were effective! How about that "packed ice theory" that worked out well...I am sure that we saved at least another 10 years on the life of our already outstanding pavement by allowing it to become an ice rink. I am sure glad our leaders have their priorities straight... I am pretty sure the bus drivers who's buses nearly crashed onto I-5 near Melrose Street agree!

Well done Mayor, you did great! Sure there is room to improve, but I'd agree that it was a B effort.... After all, it is only December, you may get another crack at it. Maybe next time dig deep down and find that little extra and earn that A.

While driving Northbound on Highway 17 this morning, I noticed Highway Patrol, Scotts Valley PD, and Sheriff's Office vehicles at the exits looking for someone. I turned on my scanner just as they had announced the suspect vehicle in sight on Highway 17 north, he exited Mount Hermon Rd. in Scotts Valley right behind us.

He approached us quickly just past the Scotts Valley Drive stop light, tires smoking and a line of police cars behind him. I quickly exited the roadway, then waited for the officers to pass before I pulled in to the Peet's Coffee parking lot.

The suspect had pulled in to a parking spot in front of Nob Hill and the officers with guns drawn quickly took him and a female passenger in to custody.

Not sure what this ship is...but it seemd to be tracking the whale for a bit. It looks like it also launched a smaller craft at one point.

Update: I was able to read the name of the ship pictured above as the "Pacific Star". It looks like it is a research vessel (also seen in SF bay) . . . a quick search shows it might be the same vessel described here. According to the article, "The Pacific Star sends a cone of sound waves downward, scanning rocks and the hardness of the bottom." which might explain the whale freaking out.

So, not sure if this sure if this ship was the cause of the whales distress (or if the whale was in any distress), but interesting, for sure.

Update: Turns out that the Pacific Star was involved in the search for Jim Gray's boat, The Tenacious after he was lost at sea back in 2006. Pretty cool.

Wendy Klemperer, an artist who works with salvaged metals, created the figure of a calling elk, according to Sapinsky who said she reported the theft to state police at Richfield Springs on Monday October 14 (2013).

Klemperer, who works in Brooklyn and Keene, N.H., said the stolen elk sculpture measures about 10-by-10-by-4 feet and weighs about 800 to 1,000 pounds. She told troopers the estimated value was about $20,000.

The date of the theft isn’t known but may have been about a week ago, Sapinksy said. The theft must have been well-planned because of the size and weight of the work, she said.

07/02/2009 - After stabbing three people at Westwood Mobile Home Park on Durham Rd. Burlington, North Carolina the suspect fled the scene in a white Jeep. After a short distance a Deputy from the Alamance County Sheriff's Office began to chase the suspect until the Deputy lost control of his patrol unit and crashed into some trees. The suspect continued to flee the area, and at this time his location is unknown. The condition of the three people stabbed is unclear at this time, but they were transported to the hospital emergency traffic with serious injuries. At least one of the victims of the stabbing was stabbed several times including once in the head. No other information was available at the scene early Thursday morning. (Brad Coville/Times-News)

Lots of screens. I was mic'd, positioned at a chair behind the news desk and asked questions by Brad Luck, producer for their tech report, about cell phones in society. I can't remember the exact questions, but they were the usual kinds of things that you'd expect from a large audience television news show that's run by warner bros. not a diss at all, and i enjoy the opportunity to speak to a more public audience about these things without being off the hook and hopped up or super un-nuanced about the complexitiies of social-technical communications practices.

i remember things like..why do people talk so loud on their phones? why do they feel compelled to pick up their phones even when they're in a restaurant or the movies? lots of "downside" questions around such things as the diminishing face-to-face conversations and such all. my main tact was to orient the response around the particularities of social beings who are, you know social and communicative and look at these devices as ways to maintain and knit together their social relations. of course some people are, in their character, more "chatty" than others. (i'm the last person to initiate a call that is just a "hey..howyadoin?..thought i'd just call..", but i've never been that kind of person ever. some people are. cell phones and other kinds of mobile devices are also great "distraction portals" where you can idle away idle time, or awkward time. so, in that sense, some people may be eager to receive or initiate a mobile phone call when they're waiting for a friend to meet them at a restaurant, particularly if they're sitting alone or waiting for a friend to get the popcorn from the concession stand.

Town in mourning after teens are killed in crash

11:26 AM PST on Tuesday, March 14, 2006

By RAY LANE / KING 5 News

LANGLEY - People on south Whidbey Island are mourning after a deadly car crash killed two teenagers on Monday. Police say they died when that speeding car slammed into a tree in the town of Langley. Two other teenagers survived.

"Everybody's lives changed yesterday, and today's the first day to try to figure out what that change means,” said Linda Moore.

State troopers say 18-year old Jayson Jelinek was speeding on Brooks Hill Road in a 1985 Honda Accord when he lost control and slammed into a tree.

The speed limit along the road is 25 mph. Police say was probably going 60 to 70 mph.

Jelinek, who was wearing his seatbelt, was killed instantly, as was 17-year-old Kelly Frantz, who was sitting in the backseat and not wearing a seatbelt.

Micah Petrich, 17 and Miles Sanstad, 16, were injured. Both had their seatbelts on.

All three of the passengers once attended or still attend Bayview School, a small public, alternative school.

It's going to be a tough few days there.

"I know that they're going to be feeling like mother bears protecting those kids in that high school today, and trying to help them cope," said Moore.

The State Patrol said Jelinek had a history of speeding, and witnesses said they saw the car speeding through town just before the crash.

Investigators said they do not think alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash.
