Established in 1936 by executive order of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the Patuxent Research Refuge is the Nation's only National Wildlife Refuge established to support wildlife research. The North Tract of the refuge was used for munitions testing by the military before being turned over to the refuge. Visitors must sign a waiver and agree to report any unexploded ordnances.
From Vik, we headed east to Jokulsarlon (the glacier lagoon) for the bit of our trip I'd most looked forward to - hiking on the glacier and through the ice caves. We stayed Hof to make the final journey a bit easier, but still had an early start to get to the meeting point. After receiving our crampons, harnesses and helmets, a super-jeep ride through the snow and lava field got us to the start of our hike just as the morning sun started breaking through the hazy cloud.
Bout night fashion! Hats, hoods, and helmets are the head gear must-haves at bout night!
