South of Öræfajökull there are large glacier floodplains created by endless sediment deposits from the many glacier rivers in the area. Parts of these floodplains get covered in thin layer of water. Knowing this I drove the 4 hours from Reykjavík to the area. My friend Einar from Localguide.is knows this area well helped me find and access this spot safely. All to many people have gotten their cars stuck in quicksand here so local advice was essential.
What I did not know is that the area only gets flooded after rain (its not the rivers that flood it but rain) but I was lucky enough that it had rained heavily for the first time in weeks just before I got there.

This is an ice cave I visited at the end of December 2013. This cave is in the Öræfajökull outlet glacier which is part of Vatnajokull, the largest ice cap in Europe.
It is not that easy to touch this cave. We began with an exciting off-road ride and walk over a dry riverbed full of ice and puddles, then hiked up to the glacier until we reached the cave entrance. The rough part is you have to walk against 20m/s to 30 m/s wind. However, it was totally worth. As you can see, a deep crystal blue with all sorts of neat definition and contrast in the ice suddenly appeared in your eyes. Most beautiful thing is various reflections of ice through sunlight produce a gradient blue inside the cave. It is definitely one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen in my life.

I wouldn't dare to venture into glacier ice caves such as this one without my trusty lantern. I mean with what else is there to light up my path? 🏮😜
