London transport RT20 as post war livery driver trainer in 1/50th scale a modified Solido model .

This is type! Pirated type, to be more precise. Many of the typefaces shown in this catalog are noted as “Similar to…” Transfertech was a Chicago-based transfer lettering producer who was known for copping the designs of Headliners, ITC, Phototype, VGC, and the fonts of Phil Martin, whose 2004 interview produced this comment from Joseph Treacy, current Headliners owner:

“The ‘Transfertech’ copies of Headliners designs that Mark refers to were copies stolen by a company, who, according to what I was told by Headliners’ management, actually bribed a livery driver and similar workers like office cleaners, to go in on weekends and surreptitiously make ‘bruning’ (brownline or blueline) copies of proofs.

The thefts apparently started about 1965, and at least in Headliners’ case, finally did at one point go to court, I believe in the Chicago area, around 1970.

The first round of determining the suspects occurred by investigating the pirated copies themselves.

After the thefts were uncovered, Headliners actually produced a range of different filmstrips for each type family, with some letters changed, and adding some other identifying marks to filmstrips, for different markets.

It worked. Suspects were detained, and lie detector tests were actually administered to get to the culprits.

Not a pretty picture, since some of the suspects were Headliners franchise operators.

That the copies were made from brunings explains why the letter quality suffered from so much ‘generation loss’ (a look similar to camera overexposure). They never, at least in the case of Headliners, got to the actual originals.”

The XTS is Cadillac's largest current offering, and has proven a hit with livery drivers in New York.

Livery driver's SUV and UPS truck on the left, NYPD Transit District 30 vehicles blocking the entire bike lane on the right. You can also see some of their "combat parking" in action. That driver who looks like they're doing a U-turn is backing onto the sidewalk. Vision Zero!

Yes, this photo really was taken on 5th October 2012.

Several waiting passengers were discussing a breakdown earlier in the day, and Arriva put out 7624, an ex-London Country Volvo Olympian in yellow livery (driver training ?) in revenue service on Gravesend-Chatham route 136.

The bus is seen here at Gravesend Garrick Street.

I remember commuting on these vehicles when they were brand new with London Country on the 409.

I rode on this bus to Rochester where I saw a sister vehicle, 7630, also in yellow livery, in service on the 191 to Grain.

Livery: Drivers Wanted

Thousands of miles away, driving home after working the

Graveyard Shift as Night Auditor at the Homewood Suites

Hilton in Clear Lake Texas. I reached my front door and was

about to turn the key when my next door neighbor told me in his

most sober voice, "They done rammed a plane into that big

office building in New York" in his normal Texas Slanguage.

I staggered in already tired, turned on the TV and left it on till I

went back to work that night at 10:30 pm. Only overnight work

fatigue drove me to shut my bleary eyes that fateful day.

One of the last things I did before leaving the NY/NJ area

5 years earlier was to drive a Limo to the front doors of

Building No.1 of the World Trade Center. The VIPs that I

drove to and from the Twin Towers often arrived by Private

Jet around 7:30 am and by 8 am we were at their usually

scheduled meeting inside the WTC. They remained inside till

early afternoon and I then drove them to their hotels or

sometimes back to their Private Jet or Helicopter. In the interim

between 7 am and 4 pm I ate breakfast, drank lots of Coffee,

smoked lots of cigarettes and strolled around the area, often

shooting the breeze with the numerous other Livery drivers

parked all around and under the area of the WTC.

Our clients were Stockbrokers and CEOs at all the major

financial institutions like Chase Manhattan, Merrill Lynch,

Bank of America etc., and they paid handsomely to keep

us booked all day when all we did was barely an hour's worth

of actual driving for them.

The pic above was not a B/W shot originally. I decided to present

it that way to convey how it contrasts with the original.....read the rest here:

Many livery drivers may now respond to hails outside of, and some parts of Manhattan. This shot was photographed near the corner of Flatbush and Fulton in downtown Brooklyn.
