And again later this is what I found. The egg after the hen left.

A stunning small ornamental grass which holds interest throughout the year. One of my favourite plants at RHS Harlow Carr. A lot of grasses are big but you could fit this one into a small space.

Under the corner bunk beds for the goats, I put up a frame and pile hay and straw on the floor and in cold weather the young kids pile under there to sleep all snuggled up against each other. I put the kitten under there one time and now I find it there quite regularly, sometimes it is about buried so I can hardly see it.

Camera-shy kitten. This cat became Dad's favorite, spending hours on his lap.

2 or 3 weeks ago I had a hen that was laying eggs up on the hay. When I remembered to check the nest, in the half dark all I could see was this writhing mass of something down in the dark hole. My first thought was, “did that hen hatch out some chicks and leave them”. I shined a light in and saw 4 baby kittens lying among 9 or 10 eggs. I took the eggs and left the kittens. I still get an egg out from among the kittens every day or two. Today I thought to catch the hen in the act and this is what I found.

Legend

Fairies are tiny, humanoid, supernatural creatures with wings. They are extremely long-lived beings known to possess magical powers such as the ability to fly and cast spells. They are also cited for their mischievous nature.

Fairies are pagan in origin and are found amoung all branches of the Celtic families. Once known as pagan gods and goddesses, the tradition to worship these little beings spread to France, Germany, and the British Isles. The Welsh peoples originally worked within a matriarchal society. They worshipped The Mother Goddess, and they called fairies The Mothers. Hence, Fairyland was always the Land of Women and fairies are often depicted as such since the Males are rare.

The Irish still say fairies live in the pagan sidh (burial mounds and barrow graves), several hundred of which still stand in the Irish countryside today. Fairies are thought to have a connection to the deadlands as well as to heaven. They have the ability to freely weave in and out of the heavens, the earth, and the underworld. Fairies are still thought to come out of their hills (fairy hills) at Samhain.

Fairies are also often found in wooded groves. Whether in hills or woods, they all reside in the land of Tir na nog which is the Land of Eternal Youth. Mortals cannot often see fairies because of the division of the worlds, but every now and again they get a precious glimpse of them. This often will happen at twilight when the veil of the worlds is briefly parted. Travelers must be wary, however. Entering Tir na nog can be very dangerous as few mortals have been known to escape alive.

Mischievous fairies have been known to lure travelers into Tir na nog, and few of these travelers have returned. Travelers that did return often described a dreamlike state in which they spent most of their time in a curious fog. Sometimes a traveler would come back decades later only to find his loved ones had passed away, while the traveler himself was still as young as the day he entered the grove. Will o' Wisps are illuminated fairies, pretty lights, which lead unwary travelers into this strange land, and can be avoided by refusing to follow them.

Tomi and Buttons help me try-out an impromptu 3-light setup using my new flash.

Strobist: Bare Canon 580ex II on camera as Master, dialed way back and bounced off of the ceiling. Bare Canon 430ex as Slave to camera right and 90° to the models. Vivitar 285hv to camera left attached to a cheap optical trigger, firing through a white shoot-through umbrella, also 90° to the models.

I was later disappointed to find that this didn't work as well with the 580 off-camera. It would seem that there is just a bit of lag with the 580 when its set to be the Master and fired by wireless trigger (at least my Cactus trigger). If the shutter is set to about half the max-sync speed, everything is fine but if I decrease the exposure time beyond that, the shutter curtain will already be closing by the time the main flash pops leaving a shadow along the edge. I found some information about it which will hopefully lead me to a solution because I'd really like to be able to slave some 430s as opposed to needing separate triggers for them when the 580 is off-camera.

Legend

One of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World-The "Hanging Gardens of Babylon" this rendition built by Special04 Magic - Unicorns & Butterflies

The ancient city of Babylon, under King Nebuchadnezzar II, must have been a wonder to the traveler's eyes. "In addition to its size," wrote Herodotus, a historian in 450 BC, "Babylon surpasses in splendor any city in the known world."

Herodotus claimed the outer walls were 56 miles in length, 80 feet thick and 320 feet high. Wide enough, he said, to allow a four-horse chariot to turn. The inner walls were "not so thick as the first, but hardly less strong." Inside the walls were fortresses and temples containing immense statues of solid gold. Rising above the city was the famous Tower of Babel, a temple to the god Marduk, that seemed to reach to the heavens.

While archaeological examination has disputed some of Herodotus's claims (the outer walls seem to be only 10 miles long and not nearly as high) his narrative does give us a sense of how awesome the features of the city appeared to those that visited it. Interestingly enough, though, one of the city's most spectacular sites is not even mentioned by Herodotus: The Hanging Gardens of Babylon, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Accounts indicate that the garden was built by King Nebuchadnezzar, who ruled the city for 43 years starting in 605 BC (There is a less-reliable, alternative story that the gardens were built by the Assyrian Queen Semiramis during her five year reign starting in 810 BC). This was the height of the city's power and influence and King Nebuchadnezzar constructed an astonishing array of temples, streets, palaces and walls.

According to accounts, the gardens were built to cheer up Nebuchadnezzar's homesick wife, Amyitis. Amyitis, daughter of the king of the Medes, was married to Nebuchadnezzar to create an alliance between the nations. The land she came from, though, was green, rugged and mountainous, and she found the flat, sun-baked terrain of Mesopotamia depressing. The king decided to recreate her homeland by building an artificial mountain with rooftop gardens.

The Hanging Gardens probably did not really "hang" in the sense of being suspended from cables or ropes. The name comes from an inexact translation of the Greek word kremastos or the Latin word pensilis, which mean not just "hanging", but "overhanging" as in the case of a terrace or balcony.
