Grade II Listed Church of Saint Luke in Holton le Moor, a small village in West Lindsey, Lincolnshire.

The original church was built in the 11th Century but was re-built in 1854 by George Place in Early English style, consisting of a chancel, nave, north aisle, and a bell turret with two bells. It was again partly rebuilt in 1926 by H. G. Gamble. The earlier parts of the church are ironstone, the doorway Norman style, and the stoup 13th century. There are memorials to the Dixon family, Lords of the Manor, painted wall decoration in the south chapel and stained-glass windows from 1893.

The Geo Lister Company was formed by George Lister in the late 1890s. Geo Lister formed a partnership with Charles Flatters and Harry Branch, creating a general engineering, blacksmith and wrought ironwork shop. When the partners retired and his sons Alfred and Horace joined the business, the company's name was changed to 'Geo. Lister & Sons' in 1919. In 1930, Horace became sole proprietor after the untimely death of his brother Alfred, and then their father.

Horace's sons Raymond and Brian later became directors in the company, ascending to joint Managing Directorship in 1954. Brian had an interest in racing and one of his first races was in a Morgan 4/4 sports. Later, he built a Cooper-MG sports car with help from Lister apprentice Edwin 'Dick' Barton. This was followed by the Tojeiro-JAP named the Asteroid.

Brian Lister met a one-handed individual named Archie Scott Brown who would later prove his abilities as a world-class racing driver. When the duo met Don Moore, a local motor engineer, the ingredients were formed for what would become a successful series of Lister sports-racing cars. During the 1950s , their cars would be a dominant force in the 'free-Formula' British sports car category and in Sports Car Club of America national Championship competition. The legendary 'Knobbly' Lister-Jaguars and Lister-Chevrolets are a few of the memorable names that raced during the 1958 and 1959 SCCA series.

A new company was formed by Brian Lister, dubbed 'Brian Lister (Light Engineering) Ltd' with the purpose of building racing cars. They utilized engines and various components from MG, Bristol, Chevrolet, Jaguar and Maserati vehicles during the 1950s. The most famous of their creations was the Knobbly. In total, there were no more than 17 original cars constructed in 1958. Following Scott Brown's fatal accident at Spa, Belgium, in May of 1958, Brian Lister closed his car manufacturing business.

In 1990, four special 'Centenary Edition' Lister-Jaguar 'Knobbly' cars were created to honor the centenary year of Geo. Lister & Sons Ltd. They were made to the same standard as the original. The final products were marketed by Lawrence Pearce in England.

George Washington Birthplace National Monument Additional Documentation

Colonial Beach, Virginia

Listed 12/18/2013

Reference Number: 66000850

The George Washington Birthplace National Monument Historic District is significant at the national level under Criteria A, B, C, and D. It derives its primary significance at the national level under Criterion B as the site where George Washington, a transcendent figure in American history, was born and lived between 1732 and 1735. Under Criterion A, the district is nationally significant in the area of Conservation as the site of several seminal events in the history of historic preservation in the United States. The district also is nationally significant under Criterion A in the area of Archeology- Historic/Non-Aboriginal. Investigations undertaken by National Park Service archeologists in the 1930s and early 1940s firmly established the important role that the nascent field of historical archeology subsequently played in the interpretation of National Parks. The investigations were also key events in the transition of the field from its antiquarian origins in the late nineteenth century to its theoretical and academic maturation in the latter half of the twentieth century. The district also has national significance under Criterion C in the area of Landscape Architecture. Combining the planning principles developed for the western wilderness parks with prevailing interpretive concepts, the National Park Service, with the Wakefield Association, created a historic designed landscape incorporating the setting and surviving features of Popes Creek Plantation within an overlay memorializing Washington's association with the birthplace and providing visitor access. Charles E. Peterson (1906-2004), one of the National Park Service's most important and prolific early landscape architects, contributed many characteristic aspects of the landscape design.

In total contrast to the beautiful Victorian tenement flats around the area where I work, is the garage that I use. I'd never thought much about it until Paul, my mechanic was telling me that he is moving out of the area. Then one day the sign below appeared on a lamppost. Being the nosey person that I am, I went to read it. Well! Honestly I could hardly stop laughing - the listed building that required planning permission to be taken down, was the shack that Paul used as his garage.

The books I'm currently reading. I'm really only reading the Milan Kundera book, but I have these others on deck in case I need a diversion from the heavy philosiphy and odd perspective of "The Unbearable Lightness of Being". Don't get me wrong, it's a good read, but I think a lot was lost in translation from Czech.

In case you can't read it, the top one is "Me Talk Pretty One Day" by David Sedaris. (It's hilarious.)

Today on the bus passing the derelict Eastford Square in Collyhurst Manchester.

Back in the 70s this was a thriving shopping parade, the 2nd shop from the right was a post office owned and run by the charismatic ex footballer Bert Lister.

From his obituary Manchester evening news..

LEGENDARY ex-Oldham Athletic striker Bert Lister

(4th Oct 1939 – July 2007)

has died this week after suffering a serious heart attack.

The 67-year-old was rushed for treatment to North Manch-ester General Hospital last week and sadly passed away on Monday.

Lister, who has always retained strong links with Oldham, made 153 appearances for the Latics after moving to Boundary Park in October 1960 as part of a double deal that also saw Ken Branagan make the move with him from Manchester City.

A free-scoring centre-forward who boasted the fantastic career record of a goal in every two games, he bagged 97 goals during his period with Oldham.

Bert would have hit the magic milestone of 100 league and cup goals for the club but a hat-trick against Accrington Stanley in October 1961 was declared void after Stanley resigned from the league months later.

Most memorably, he scored six right-footed goals in one game - still a league record - as Latics romped to a remarkable 11-0 victory over Southport on Boxing Day 1962.

Bert was later voted 'Player of the Year' that season as Jack Rowley's side won promotion and was still regularly seen in attendance on matchdays last season, often carrying out half-time 'Strike It Lucky' draws on the pitch.

The Grade II Listed St Helens Church on the edge of Boultham Park, at 37 Hall Drive in Boultham, Lincoln, Lincolnshire.

The original church built on the site is mentioned when Gilbert of Ghent, a nephew of William the Conqueror, endowed newly founded Bardney Abbey with the Manor or Estate of Boultham amongst many others. Gilbert’s grandson, Robert, Earl of Lincoln, gave the care of the church and the appointment of a Rector to the Abbott and Convent of Bardney.

In 1864 the current St Helens Church was built by the Ellison family of Boultham Hall, by architect Michael Drury to replace the original medieval church. Dressed stone and ashlar with slate roofs and a side wall stack. Nave with western bellcote, and chancel. The nave extended and restored in 1887 by architect C Hodgson Fowler, with new spired turret and seating. The contractor was W Cowper of Campsall near Doncaster, and the reopening was held in November 1887.

The present church contains some elements of the medieval church, such as a 13th-century blocked arcade containing stiff leaf capitals and octagonal pier with detached shafts, double chamfered arches under hoodmoulds with sculpted terminals.

The cemetery was extended to more than an acre in 1928, funded by public subscription. When Boultham Hall estate became a public park, Boultham Park, the church was still used publicly, but its functions were mostly taken over by the new Holy Cross Church in 1940. There are occasional services, such as weddings, funerals, and a Christmas Carol Service.

The churchyard contains a granite memorial, from the fortifications of Sebastopol during the Crimean War. The inscription reads "Brought from Sevastopol and placed here by Major R G Ellison, in memory of the men of his company 47th Regt who fell in the Crimean War".

Cleaning out the car the other day and came across this list I made a while back:

Brass cleaner: check

Bucket: check

Bamboo blinds for bedroom: check

Pirate sword: check

Mosquito bomb: check

Pirate sword?

I'm absolutely terrible when it comes to shopping for groceries. I always seem to forget something. Shopping lists are therefore a must for me. So, just before I head out to the shop, I always double-check if I put everything I need on the list. Today, I spent quite some time checking what I need to get. I used the Braille labels I've made for everything in the kitchen to check which things are running out and what I need to buy. Then, I sat down and carefully wrote my shopping list in Braille. Things do take a little longer when you can't see, but you get such a sense of achievement when you discover that you can make your way around just by seeing with your hands.
