ESSENTIALS:
•Parka (Windbreaker) or Insulated Water Resistant Coat: Some ships provide parkas – please ask your Program Manager. Parkas should be large enough to wear over insulating layers.
•Waterproof Rubber Boots (“Wellies” or “Wellington Boots”), (12”-15”) with strong rubber-ridged, nonskid soles that fit well. These specifications are VERY IMPORTANT. You will be stepping into cold water up to 10” deep during wet landings. Moon or leather boots are not appropriate. (Note: Be sure your boots fit with one or two pairs of heavy socks – tight boots will be cold and uncomfortable). Suggested sources for rubber boots: sporting goods, army surplus, or camping equipment stores in your area. These boots are often referred to as “Wellies” or “Wellington boots.” Many good outlets are available online.
•Waterproof Pants/Rain Pants - Pull-on waterproof pants are very important for spray in the Zodiacs and wet landings. They should be roomy enough to wear over thermal underwear or regular pants.
•Cap and Neck Gaiter/Balaclava – Fleece is excellent since it is light and extremely warm; wool is also recommended. Hats with a brim to shade your eyes as well as flaps to protect your ears are ideal.
•Waterproof mittens and/or gloves – While gloves are convenient, mittens are warmer. Thin glove liners under thick mittens work well, since mittens can be removed to operate camera equipment.
•Sweaters – Medium weight wool or polar fleece
•Turtlenecks
•T-shirts/Warm Weather Clothes – Casual warm weather clothing is practical for layering and wearing aboard the ship.
•Warm Trousers – Wear wool slacks, cords, sweatpants, jeans, or expedition-weight fleece thermal underwear under your waterproof pants.
•Long Underwear – 2 sets; Capilene, Polypropylene, or Lightweight Silk
•Warm Socks – Bring several pairs of knee-length heavy socks and thin sock liners. For heavier pairs, rag wool is an excellent choice. Liners can be synthetic or silk. Remember that rubber boots are not well insulated, so you will rely on the warmth of your socks.
OTHER USEFUL ITEMS:
•Daypack that is sturdy, lightweight, and waterproof – extremely useful for taking extra clothing and camera gear on shore visits.
•Sun Protection – Sunscreen with UV filter, sunglasses, and lip protection
•Bathing Suit – For hotels and maybe a polar plunge or hot springs
•Camera – with extra batteries and twice the amount of film/memory you think you need
•Extra pair of prescription glasses or contact lenses
•Prescription Medicine – and a Personal Medical Kit with remedies for seasickness, upset stomach, allergies and pain relief
•Binoculars – compact ‘travel-size’ binoculars general do not perform well; we recommend magnification of at least 8x, weatherproofing (resistant to fog and/or water), multi-coated lenses, and a large focus knob for ease of use with gloves
•Collapsible Walking Stick/Trekking Pole – for negotiating uneven ground; some trekking poles feature a camera mount and can double as a monopod
•Electrical Converter & Adapter Plug – power aboard most ships is 220-volt with recessed European-type outlets; US standard 110-volt equipment with flat-pronged plugs require a voltage converter and a round, two-pronged European adapter plug
•Ziploc Bags – or a small dry bag to protect cameras and film when going ashore
•Woolite/Laundry Soap – if you plan to do any hand laundry
•Small Beanbag – to use as a camera tripod (reduces shake aboard ship)
•US $1 Bills – for taxi rides and gratuities before and after your cruise
•Pocket Calculator – for currency conversion
•Notebook, Pen and Address Book
•Toiletries
•Travel Alarm Clock
•Hand Warmers
Items we Recommend Keeping in your Carry-on Bag:
•Change of clothes (in case of luggage delay)
•Camera, flash, extra batteries, film or memory cards (NOTE: many airports around the world
have installed high-power detection machines that can damage exposed or unexposed film. Carry your camera and all film in your carry-on bag, and request that they be searched by hand. Film packed in clear Ziploc bags is easier to inspect.)
•Prescription drugs, if applicable. If you are taking prescription drugs, take along a prescription signed by your doctoring case you need an emergency refill.
•Extra pair of prescription glasses or contact lenses and sunglasses.
HELPFUL NOTES:
•Comfortable and casual clothing is recommended while onboard the ship and ashore.
•For Captain’s Welcome and Farewell parties/dinners, moderately dressy or “smart casual: attire may be appropriate. As each ship is different, please contact your Program Manager for specifics.
•The principle of layering: air is a great insulator, so trapping air in several layers of clothing will keep you warmer than wearing one or two very heavy items. You can also add or remove layers easily to remain comfortable at all times.
•Wool and silk clothing is recommended instead of cotton because they can trap warm air. Synthetic fabrics spring back into shape after compression and have excellent wicking properties. Polar fleece is popular and recommended. Polypropylene and Capilene wick moisture away from your skin and keep you warm without adding bulk.
The Grade I Listed St Edmundsbury Cathedral, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, East Anglia.
A church has stood on the site of the cathedral since at least 1065, when St Denis's Church was built within the precincts of Bury St Edmunds Abbey. In the early 12th century the Abbot, Anselm had wanted to make a pilgrimage along the Way of St James to Santiago de Compostela. He was unsuccessful and instead rebuilt St Denis's and dedicated the new church to Saint James, which served as the parish church for the north side of Bury St Edmunds.
This church was largely rebuilt, starting in 1503, with more alterations in the 18th and 19th centuries. When the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich was created in 1914, St James Church was made the cathedral. In 1959 Benjamin Britten wrote the Fanfare for St Edmundsbury for a "Pageant of Magna Carta" held in the cathedral grounds.
From 1960 onwards, there was renewed building work designed to transform the parish church into a cathedral building, with the rebuilding of the chancel and the creation of transepts and side chapels. The cathedral architect from 1943 to 1988 was Stephen Dykes Bower and he left £2 million for the completion of the cathedral. In the cathedral grounds a new choir school and visitor's centre were built which were opened in 1990. A Gothic revival tower was built between 2000 and 2005.
The font was designed in 1870 by George Gilbert Scott, constructed on a medieval shaft, with a cover by F. E. Howard of Oxford. The decoration was added in 1960.
In addition to guided tours of the cathedral itself, visitors can view changing exhibits of art in the Edmund Gallery, and an exhibit of historic and religious regalia and artefacts in the Cathedral Treasures display. The painting "The Martyrdom of St Edmund" by Brian Whelan hangs in the Lady Chapel.

List was originally a Danish settlement, consisting of two farms. List was part of the royal enclaves, which were small areas of the Kingdom of Denmark situated within the duchy of Schleswig, the latter also being governed by the Danish king. After the Danish-German war of 1864, List became part of Prussia. The plebiscite of 1920 drew the border just north of List, with the next island (Rømø) being returned to Denmark. After World War I, List became a naval air base. Many buildings were built during the Nazi period. Since the 1950s, List's economy has been heavily based on the tourist industry. Tudor and Jacobean motifs in abundance distinguish Shrewsbury's grand railway station of 1848, once a major confluence of the Great Western and London & North Western (later LMS) railway networks, and providing key links to all corners of Wales. The visionary architect was a local man, Thomas Mainwaring Penson. Shrewsbury station has been Grade II listed since 1969.

History
A late C18 or early C19 house, first shown on the 1889 Ordnance Survey.
Exterior
A 2½-storey 2-window house of whitened pebble-dashed front, black-painted smooth-rendered plinth and thin architraves, slate roof and brick end stacks. Openings are offset to the R. On the R side is a panelled door under an original small-pane overlight, and pediment. On the L side are 16-pane horned sash windows to ground and 1st floors, and narrower segmental-headed 16-pane 1st-floor sash window above the entrance, but not aligned with it. A 2-light small-pane attic window is carried above eaves and is under a gable.
The rear is cement rendered. It has 4-pane horned sash windows on the R side, except for an escape door and stair in the upper storey. A 1-storey projection is on the L side, above which is an inserted 1st-floor window. Another 1-storey projection on the R side is partly against the rear of No 1.

I thought about getting the bus to Bearwood (on the Outer Circle) and wasn't sure what was there to take. After I arrived I headed towards the Bus Station, and behind that was this park - Lightwoods Park.
I always thought that Bearwood was within Birmingham, but now it appears to be in the district of Sandwell.
The park was run by Birmingham until November 2010, when Sandwell took over running it.
There is signs here of it's Birmingham past.
Behind all this scaffolding is the Grade II listed Lightwoods House. I think it is supposed to be getting restored, but there are demolition signs around it. It appears externally to be in poor condition. I hope Sandwell Council restore it, and turn it into a museum.
House. Late C18, re-fronted mid-C19. Brick with stucco dressings and slate
roof. A symmetrical composition of two storeys and five bays, with chamfered
quoins. The three central bays project, also with chamfered quoins, and with
a pediment. The ground floor windows have rusticated surrounds and keystones.
The first floor windows, above a cornice, are sashed, have segmental heads, and
are flanked by pilasters with triglyphs over. Each has an apron with blind
balustrade and a segmental pediment with scallop shell motif. The porch has
rusticated engaged columns, triglyph frieze, and balustrade. The doorway has
a round head. Set back to the left is a one-bay pedimented pavilion, remain-
ing from the C18 building. At the rear is a Venetian stair window with Doric
columns as mullions. The VCH gives a sketch plan and elevation of the original
house, showing the extent of the C19 alterations. They state that a brick to
the east of the porch is inscribed: "Jonathan Grundy, June 19, 1780". (VCH,
pp 101, 102).
Lightwoods House, Lightwoods Park, Bearwood - Heritage Gateway
The demolition sign is on the left.
Lightwoods House in the south of Smethwick near the Harborne boundary took its name from the tract of woodland in the area. The house is said to have been built by Jonathan Grundy in 1791, but a brick in the wall immediately east of the entrance porch is inscribed 'Jonathan Grundy, June 19, 1780'. Grundy, the eldest son of Jonathan Grundy of Wigston Parva (Leics.), is the first known occupant of Lightwoods House and lived there until his death in 1803. His widow Hannah lived there until her death in 1815, and their daughter, also Hannah, lived in the house until she died unmarried in 1829. The house and its land then passed to Jonathan Grundy's niece Eliza, the wife of Henry Goodrich Willett. In 1842 Willett, whose wife had died in 1837, owned 38 a. of land in Smethwick; most of his estate lay immediately around the house, but part was between the present Bearwood, Waterloo, and Grange Roads. Willett lived at Lightwoods House until his death in 1857. His nephew, Captain H. J. Willett, occupied the house for a few months after his uncle's death, but in 1858 it was leased to George Caleb Adkins, a local soap manufacturer. Adkins bought the house with some land from Willett's trustees in 1865 and lived there until his death in 1887.
Taken from British History - Smethwick - Other estates
In 1902, on the death of Caleb Adkins, apparently his son, Lightwoods House with its 16-acre park was put up for sale, and it seemed likely that the house would be demolished and the land used for housing. Mainly through the efforts of A. M. Chance, however, the house and park were bought for the public. In October 1902 the committee which had raised the purchase money handed over the property to Birmingham corporation as a public park. About the same time other land was added bringing the boundary to Adkins Lane and Galton Road, and further subscriptions enabled the committee to buy more land in 1905. A feature of the park is the garden, opened in 1915, which contains specimens of the plants mentioned by Shakespeare. Since the opening of Lightwoods Park the house has at various times accommodated a public library, public refreshment rooms, and rooms for the Sons of Rest. In 1971 it was being converted into studios and offices by the lessees, John Hardman & Co. Ltd., stained-glass artists.
The original house was of brick with stone dressings and had a pedimented central block, with detached wings which housed the kitchen and stables. During the 19th century the symmetry of the original design was obscured by several extensions, the interior was remodelled, and the main front was enriched with stucco decoration in an early-18thcentury style.
At the Market Hall in Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, South Wales.
It is housed below the Town Hall.
One one side is also the Borough Theatre.
As well as the indoor market, there was some market stalls outside at the back.
The main entrance is on Cross Street.
It is Grade II listed as the Town Hall.
Location
Situated on the main commercial street which runs from south-east to north-west across Abergavenny. This is easily the largest, tallest and most dominant building in Abergavenny, visible in the countryside for miles around.
History
1869-71 (dated), by Wilson and Willcox of Bath after a competition; the contractors were S J Moreland and Sons of Gloucester. The tower clock was presented by Crawshay Bailey of Maindiff Court and is inscribed 'Gilbert and Bland, Croydon 1871'. The northern clock face is said to have been painted black to commemorate the death of Prince Albert, but he died in 1862. The assembly room was re-fitted as a theatre in 1906 and this was modernised in 1996. The building remains remarkably unchanged externally; the market hall is also unaltered.
Interior
The building was designed as a multi-purpose one to provide municipal offices and a council chamber, a general market, an assembly room, the corn exchange and the poor law offices; and it still houses all but the last two uses, now out-dated. In the main the interior is plainly finished and a number of spaces have been altered, there remain a number of internal features of note.
There are two main staircases, a stone one in short flights around a central core and a decorative iron one with hardwood treads and a continuous mahogany handrail; this latter one has been partly altered. The assembly room, now the Borough Theatre, has an open roof with very large and elaborate pine trusses with Gothic decoration and a decorated balcony front. It was converted to a theatre in 1906 when it accommodated 600, but it now seats 250. The council chamber, Mayor's Parlour and the committee rooms have deeply coffered ceilings but are otherwise plainly finished and have been altered. The tower houses two fine bells and a clock made by Gilbert and Bland of Croydon, which was presented by Crawshay Bailey in 1871. The corn exchange is top lit and has a 4-bay open-trussed roof. The market hall has a main nave with aisles and a subsidiary nave under a smaller and lower roof. The main roof is supported by two lines of six very tall cast iron posts which support wrought iron Warren girder rafters carrying light wrought iron purlins running the length of the roof; the apex is glazed.
Exterior
Built of coursed, rock-faced Old Red Sandstone with Bath limestone ashlar dressings, natural slate roofs. Large rectangular block at the centre of the town and with show fronts to Cross Street and Market Street, with a market hall in the angle behind. The style is rural Early French Gothic, but with some Italian touches. Three storeys, five windows to Cross Street and three windows to Market Street with a tall clock tower on the corner. The ground and first floors are contained within an arcade of five Gothic arches of a transitional pattern, the centre bay containing the main entrance through to the market hall and the left hand arch under the tower the entrance to the main stair to the council chamber and assembly room, now the Municipal Theatre. The arcade is of steeply pointed Gothic arches divided by Romanesque piers with stiff-leaf capitals. The stair door has colonettes, plank doors and an elaborate rose window with six vertical recesses below in the arch head. The other arches are slightly wider, with the market entrance closed by iron gates and the other three shop windows, glazed in three vertical lights, with the lunettes over glazed as triple sashes and lighting the mezzanine. The second floor has five 2-light windows with 1 over 1 pane sashes, divided by a central colonette, Caernarvon heads and paired cinquefoils in the tympanum. Double cill band with shields between. Eaves on stone brackets, large pitched roof hipped at the Market Street end and gabled at the other and with three vent cowls on either side of the ridge.
The lower stages of the tower are part of the main elevation. The first free-standing stage has three arrow slit windows to each face, over which is the clock dial, white with block letters (illuminated at night), black on the north side (see History), over this is the belfry stage with bell louvres, each 4-light with colonettes. Of these features only the clock face appears on the rear elevation of the tower. The top of the tower has machicolated battlements, a fretted balustrade and corner tourelles. These, and the central pyramid roof, are covered in copper and the bright green hue makes them easily visible at distance.
The Market Street elevation is in three bays with the features as before.
The far gable end looms high above The Kings Head Hotel and has a large plate tracery rose window with a central quatrefoil surrounded by eight smaller ones. Arch braced tie-beam gable truss, stack on gable.
The rear elevation is mostly covered by the market hall roof, but the Market Street end has an additional second floor window as before and the top half of a second one. There is also a large central stack on the rear wall.
The market hall projects across the whole rear and has two gabled roofs, the smaller on the left. Plain blind long walls. The large gable has seven graduated windows with a circular window above the largest and widest one in the centre. The smaller gable has three windows. The roofs have a wide glazed section along the ridge.
Reason for Listing
Included for its special interest as an the largest and most prominent secular building in Abergavenny with good architectural qualities as the design of Wilson and Willcox, well known West Country architects of the Victorian period.

Erected around 1900, the shelter by the Marine Lake is in cast iron and glass with a lead roof, it has an H-shaped plan, and is in s single storey. The columns have crocketed capitals and foliated brackets, and the panels contain Art Nouveau motifs. In the shelter are slatted wooden benches.
Brian Lister’s genius wasn’t in designing a car from scratch. For one thing he didn’t have the budget, so he used his engineering nous to re-work existing and successful parts. Having won the Le Mans 24 Hours more than any other manufacturer during the ‘50s, Jaguar was the natural place to start.
Lister made use of the proven D-Type drivetrain and its four-speed all-synchromesh gearbox, which gave the car long enough legs to top 180mph without over-stressing the XKD engine. Housed in a tubular steel chassis and wrapped in either a ‘Knobbly’ or Costin alloy body, the Lister-Jaguar package provided a serious challenge to its works entered competition.
Despite a disappointing clutch failure in its first race, the car’s overall performance showed serious potential. A few weeks later at Goodwood Archie Scott-Brown took victory in the Sussex Trophy, thus beginning a six-race winning streak.
Successive Lister-Jaguars upgraded from the 3.4 to 3.8-litre XKD engine and found fortune through to 1959, achieving over 30 wins. But, with World Sports Car regulations altered for 1958 to enforce an engine capacity limit of 3.0-litres, they struggled to remain at the top. Club events and regional races still showed the car to be lightning fast, but its best days were gone.
Originally a 1958-spec works ‘Knobbly’ Lister-Jaguar, BHL3 was successfully campaigned by Scott-Brown. The car won two races at Snetterton in March registered as VPP 9, but the fitting of stickier Dunlop R5 tyres caused steering rack and arm failures. A subsequent crash at Spa required a full rebuild to the updated and more aerodynamic 1959 Costin specification.
Following this work BHL3 left the factory in time for the ‘59 season powered by the necessary 3.0-litre engine. After running strongly early on at that year’s Le Mans 24 Hours, Walt Hansgen and Peter Blond were forced to retire with a technical problem.
Sold following Lister’s closure in 1959, BHL3 adopted the familiar VPP 9 registration and soon found new stardom in MGM’s The Green Helmet. Filming commenced with another Lister-Jaguar, BHL126, but when it sustained damage BHL3 stepped into the breach.
In 1961 the car was involved in an accident during Goodwood’s Whitsun Trophy. The following year Australian Earle Cameron purchased BHL3 and shipped it to Sydney where it was fitted with a Chevrolet V8 and used infrequently. In 1969 Gavan Sandford-Morgan conducted a partial restoration to display the car in his Birdwood Mill Museum near Adelaide.
In 1975 BHL3 was sold to the Gold Coast where it received further restoration for use in demonstrations. Another sale in 1986 returned the car to Sydney where it was driven sparingly over a six-year custodianship. A new owner in 1992 returned BHL3 to its racing roots with outings at the Goodwood Revival and Le Mans Classic.
Offered with a period-correct D-Type engine, this well known Lister-Jaguar represents an exciting opportunity to enter some of the world’s greatest historic meetings.

St Peter and St Paul's Church a Grade I listed Anglican parish church in Burgh-le-Marsh, East Lindsey, Lincolnshire.
The town is built on a large hill surrounded by former marsh land, and the marsh influenced the town's name, Burgh Le Marsh. Both the windmill and church are visible from far distances. A Roman road passes through the town on the way to Skegness and comes from the north-west via Tetford and Ulceby. The town is on the site of a former Roman fort.
Near the church is a large mound, where Saxon burial remains were found during the 1930s. There is a dip in the top of the mound, it is suggested that it was used for cockfighting, and to this day it is known as Cock Hill.
There is a traditional butcher, baker, and convenience shops. There is also a fishmonger, a post office, a Chinese takeaway, a fish and chip shop, a library, a market, an estate agent, and a florist. Local public houses include the Fleece Inn on the Market Square, the Red Lion in Storey's Lane, and the Bell Hotel, White Hart Hotel, White Swan and Ye Olde Burgh Inn on the High Street.
The town has two tower mills, the untarred Hanson's Mill of 1855 (originally four-sailed), now a
residence, and the tarred Dobson's Mill, which is run as a museum. Built in 1813 by Sam Oxley (who also built Alford Windmill a sister mill in the nearby town of Alford, Lincolnshire) it is unusual in being the only left-handed tower mill having five sails. "Left-handed sails" mean they rotate clockwise when viewed from the front - an exceedingly rare type of windmill.
