Mucking about with my new Magilight. As evenings are getting shorter and I have to up for work early, I haven't been able to get out at night to put it through its paces in the dark, but shooting inside didn't turn out too bad. Quite happy for a first attempt but I have realised I need a new perspex sheet.

Lawrence East Station has an architectural style that was ubiquitous in the mid eighties - I remember so many restaurants, stores, and municipal buildings having the same curved windows shown here, and the same kind of feel to them. The station itself is above grade, like the rest of Line 3, and the platforms are open to the weather. It definitely feels like it's a 37 year old building - there is a lot of wear and tear showing. When I was there, it was far from busy, and there seemed to be no amenties around the station at all, which was surprising. Seeing all the construction that is happening along the Eglinton LRT line, and seeing the development happening along the Sheppard subway line, I figured that a station build 37 years ago would have prompted some local development to serve the people in and around the station, but apparently not.
According to my research, the station served approximately 7500 passengers a day for 2021, a far cry from the 100000 per day at Union Station. Given the low-density of the area, and the relative inaccessability of the station itself, it's not surprising, though.
Protesters gathered at the Minnesota State Capitol asking for Governor Walz or President Biden to stop construction on the nearing completion Enbridge Line 3 pipeline in Minnesota.

Making Art for the Earth

With a huge street mural, native people tell Wells Fargo they will not be bought off with greenwashing grant $$ while the bank extends huge lines of credit to Canadian oil corporation, TransCanada, to build the Keystone XL pipeline and others investing in fossil fuel infrastructure projects.
Grandmothers from the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe in South Dakota join native people and allies in the Bay Area to bring Thunderbird Woman back to Montgomery Street where she made an appearance November, 2017. While sharing stories of struggle for clean land, air, water and for Indigenous Sovereignty, they call for divestment from Wells Fargo and for Wells Fargo to divest from the fossil fuel industry.

Located just to the east of the Lawrence East Station, The Door Factory was a business that built and installed windows and doors. According to the entry on homestars.com, the company is now out of business, leaving their sign behind. I find it interesting to see the things left over and left behind when a business moves or closes. This picture to gives a good snapshot of what the area around the station is like. There is a pretty sparse mix of industrial businesses, like The Door Factory, strip-mall style commercial sites, and some high rise apartment buildings. Being inaccessible, for the most part, by foot, the area seems pretty empty.
I do love the contrast between the peeling, decaying sign, and the shiny new-ish buildings in the background, though. I have a feeling that when the Line 2 Extension finishes, you're going to start seeing more commercial development in and around the new station. Apparently, the new subway station is going to be on the southwest corner of Lawrence and Midland, instead of the current location. (The current station is located to the south of the intersection, through the industrial park, and on the far side of the SRT tracks.)

Climate activists from 350 Mass and other local climate change groups held a protest at the Danversport Yacht Club where the North Shore Chamber of Commerce was holding its “Business Insight Breakfast: Energy Forum.” The breakfast focused on renewable energy and featured speaker from Enbridge and National Grid. According to protesters both Enbridge and National grid have failed to transition to clean energy and are greenwashing the public by refusing to make hard commitments to immediately transition off fossil fuels. Enbridge and National Grid continue to fund fossil fuel projects. Enbridge built a gas compressor in Weymouth, MA despite local concerns about safety of the surrounding community and constructed Line 3 in Minnesota through untouched wetlands and the treaty territories of Anishinaabe peoples and is currently under investigation for aquifer breaches while National Grid is constructing pipelines and replacing liquified natural gas vaporizers as well as investing billions in gas pipelines.
