Widespread Holarctic breeder, here at the southern limit of its breeding range. The dark, forest-bordered lake has given strong contrasts in the bright sunlight and the image required deliberate underexposure.

I had a rough week at work last week, but that was OK because I had something to look forward to on Saturday morning - meeting Gaylon Keeling [ www.flickr.com/photos/gaylon/ ] for the first time and making my first visit to the Blackwater Conservation Area, a setting I only knew about through some of Gaylon’s excellent nature photography.

I had a great time hiking the trails with Gaylon and learned these lessons from him:

(1) You gotta shoot in RAW. (Your storage limits permitting.) (I’m not shooting in RAW yet. It might be time.)

(2) Spot metering is a great tool.

(3) If someone asks you unexpectedly to shoot a wedding, think long and hard about whether it’s something you want to do.

(4) Whatever you do, have fun doing it!

Another lonesome city walk.

While doing a bit of night photography I decided to push the D3s a bit. Normally when taking Milky Way shots I use 6400 ISO. This image was taken at ISO 12800 for 30 sec. to gather as much light as possible. I did need to use a bit of noise reduction but there was considerably more detail in the sky than the similar image taken at ISO 6400 (see inside). Both images were taken for 30 sec. at f2.8.

Next stop ISO 102,400 but I'm afraid I will blow out the Milky Way! ;-)

The theme is the hermetical law of correspondence (we exist in all planes, astral as well as physical) I discovered the scape_lands in the urban environments, the streets of Berlin.

I was listening to the daily NSW Health update which abruptly finished while taking this photo as the Premier, Ministers, Commissioners and Chief Health Officer went to a Crisis meeting. 2 hours later they came back and placed Greater Sydney, and surrounding regions into a snap 14 day lockdown due to massive Covid-19 breach. Hopefully we eliminate it again, anyone affected by Lockdown please stay safe.

Location: Drone Haven

Drone Haven stands as a somber monument to humanity’s fleeting reign, a forsaken city overtaken by the relentless march of nature. Towering, rusted skyscrapers—once symbols of progress—now crumble into the earth, their skeletal frames bound in a suffocating embrace of vines and moss. Faded posters and the echoes of forgotten graffiti serve as grim premonitions: “The End is Near!” On the fringes, a last-ditch survivalist camp briefly defied extinction. Dreamers, with fragile hope, planted gardens and built shelters in a futile act of defiance. But disease, depletion, and discord swiftly snatched away their fleeting defiance, leaving only silence and creeping green. At the city's heart, the butcher shop—a relic of human industry—stands decayed and broken. Its walls, softened by moss and pierced by vines, speak of a once-vibrant world now swallowed by time. The eerie message lingers: “The End is Near!” A grim echo of human ambition, now lost in nature’s quiet dominion. Among the ruins, drones—mechanical phantoms—still wander, remnants of their creators' ambition. They dutifully plant life during the Echocycle, maintaining the city as both a testament to human legacy and nature's quiet triumph. But even these tireless machines, bound by the limits of their energy, will one day cease. The paradox is clear: humanity’s imprint, though indelible, is as ephemeral as the machines it birthed. Drone Haven whispers a haunting truth: humankind, for all its perceived significance, is but a fleeting echo against the eternal backdrop of nature’s vast, unyielding cycles. In the city’s rust and bloom, it mourns the inevitable collapse, the fragility of life, and the inescapable reality that all things—natural or artificial—are bound to fade into silence.

I Give My Tears 😢😭

Sometimes things don't feel right or unbelivable. There were many sculptures like this on the beach. Its amazing but just looking at them was so relaxing while the sun set down.

just a quick hello to wish you a good weekend - too busy, sorry - i will come back soon :)

A visit to Gloucester Docks and I managed to get this image moments before we were descended on by the local security, to be informed that we can't take photographs here! The Mariners Chapel, which apparently is off limits to anyone with a DSLR.

This isn't a staged reenactment. On many of the former USSR's less modernized lines, rail traffic is still governed by flags at stations and yard limits. In this scene, a switchman raises a yellow flag to indicate 'proceed', as 2-10-0 L-3958 enters the yard at Ostashkov.

To stimulate tourism in this economically depressed part of the country, in fall of 2018 Russian Railways made the decision to operate the regular local passenger train (6697/6698) from Bologoye to Ostashkov with steam power on Saturdays. While the idea behind it is to increase tourism, make no mistake - this a regular passenger train whose primary job is to serve as a form of local transportation. The vast majority of passengers aren't tourists, but little old babushkas just trying to get from village to village with their jars of mushrooms and pickled tomatoes. This is as authentic of an experience as you can get with a steam-hauled passenger train in the 21st century. The train takes three hours to traverse its 70-mile route and travels at speeds of 30-40 mph, making 13 stops in various villages along the way.

A photograph taken as I was exploring the surrounding around Budva, Montenegro.

When we overcome the fears, the rancors, the failures ... when we are we themselves ... where our limits are?

View On Black
