Couldn't pass up this floating oak leaf with a tiny feather for a passenger. Well out in the lake so had to crop quite a bit. Unfortunately, the lake is littered with tiny debris from strong winds blowing leaves, etc. Such is nature. :)

Last stop in Maine: The Penobscot Narrows Bridge in Prospect.

When you're used to massive steel girders and bulging suspension cables on your bridges, this thing looks spindly. But I went up to the observation deck at the top of the tower here, 420 feet above sea level, and it wasn't swaying under the weight of passing traffic or blowing wind. Just a little cramped inside.

The Belton Job pulls into the GRLW Yard with U18B 9503 (Ex SCL 251) doing the honors. This particular U18B has a smaller fuel tank than the other 5 (6 if you count 9501) U18Bs on Pickens’ roster. The reason for this is because it was one of the 12 U18Bs SCL ordered for its worst maintained branches, numbered 250 through 261. According to a book, SCL considered ordering them with A1A-A1A trucks but GE was able to lighten the locomotives sufficiently with Floating Bolster trucks. I believe 9503 is the only remaining example of the Ultra Lightweight U18Bs.

This goes with the pic I posted a couple of days ago of the Mount Gambier to Adelaide overnight mixed. At Belair in the Adelaide Hills, the passenger accommodation would be detached and tripped down to the Adelaide station using an English Electric powered 500 class shunt loco.

Freshly-overhauled BR 'Derby Lightweight' DMU in 1958, with car E79024 nearest the camera.

These units had first entered service in 1954, and the last ones were withdrawn from passenger traffic in 1969. Some survived in departmental use, and today (2018) one two-car unit and one single-car unit - and a two-car battery-electric version - have been preserved.

This amazingly fit person was all the way from the USA and had all his needs in a very lightweight package. I cannot remember the exact location here, but it was probably somewhere around Coober Pedy where there can be hundreds of kilometres between settlements.

On our big trip around Australia, we thought we were travelling light using our little Honda Jazz for the long journey, but as you can see, we encountered many other travellers with much more lightweight rigs.
