The right-hand power strip powers the Apple display, printer, etc., and can be shut off to save power. The other strip has the network things I need to stay up.

The empty spot held the Apple display power brick, which unfortunately has to be no more than two feet or so from my laptop due to poor design. A DVI extension cable will fix that.

Blog post

"What?" You asked.

Yes KOLO is synonymous with archival/presentation and most often associated with photography, scrapbooking and art projects. Their Essex Travel Book released this year seems like an odd addition to their product line-up but when you think about it, the whole idea of the Essex series is to bring the KOLO aesthetics and these associations from your archive to your everyday life. You don't carry a typical KOLO product everyday, but you can carry an Essex all the time and treat it as a process to create your final archive/project.

How does this lead to the KOLO-GTD association? If you've been a follower of Scription or lifehacker, you've probably seen my mind.Depositor and its subsequent version as a GTD index card cover. Well, months ago when I received a long awaited Essex in leather, I decided that I wouldn't want to put it into rough use as a notebook. So I employed the law of subtraction, took away the refills and elastic loops and made the cover my new GTD tool.

The medium size Essex is just right for the 6x4" index cards. Since the elastic enclosure is quite strong and I don't intend to walk around dangling this, even though the index cards are not secured inside any pocket, I feel safe enough.

The back side of the window pocket becomes very useful to hold a notepad as a temporary drop box too, how perfect! With a few more creative twist, you can secure the cards when enclosed, unfold the cover all the way to make an "A" stand so you can see your top index card in standing position, etc... I will leave this to you for fun. Don't forget to share here or at Koloist.com if you decide to GTD this way.

June '18. I've added a Dell 21" monitor in portrait mode for easier viewing of my work calendar

This is a repost of my earlier Come Together desktop with Winamp open. I am using the Winamp Cpro plugin with the Cpro Ebonite Skin (at 70% opacity) and the Album List plugin for album art. Aside from that the desktop is the same. I have darkened the windows visual style colour to have it further match the bars and winamp.

---------------------

OS: Windows 7.

The top bar is a customised CD Art Display skin called 'Subject Matter' that is compatible with virtually every major desktop resolution.

The left bar was created in photoshop using the CAD skin base image.

The icons on the left bar are Lucid Icons on Rocket Dock

Bottom right of the taskbar is a customised Enigma Rainmeter skin and Winamp tray controls.

The desktop is fairly customisable with plenty of bar space to put plenty of rainmeter configs or whatever else you want.

Here is a zip file I have uploaded containing the customised skins and configs, the dock and tray icons and various resolution wallpapers which I have photoshopped the left bar onto. You can then slip CD Art Display into place. I have also included the clean wallpaper (not bars) and the bar PNG files if you wish to do something yourself. Secondary MediaFire link here if you are unable to access MegaUpload.

I recommend right clicking the CAD skin and pinning to the desktop and locking it onto position so you do not move it around accidentally. Also put the Enigma taskbar configs to 'stay topmost' so they don't fall behind the taskbar when you click on it.

Enjoy, if you need any help just ask.

Here is my lonely go pack all packed up and ready to go. I travel and visit various company manufacturing facilities as Corporate Lean Engineer. Basically, my job is to try to help processes work as efficiently as possible. Much like lifehacking or minimalism, it is breaking the work down to its core.

So back to the bag, it has four basic pockets. The biggest which carries the "work" items: laptop, notepads, reference books, etc for work. The middle pocket is for my "personal" items: my books, mags, sometimes a light jacket or hat. I like that I can separate the personal and the work, it is handy. The top outer pocket houses all the chargers, USB memory sticks, cables, MP3 Player, and headphones. The bottom outer pocket handles the laptop charger, pens, mouse, and it is where I stuff all the receipts for the expense reports. Everything is fairly simplimatic.

My desktop inspired by lifehacker website.

fences for hiding desktop icons

After creating the original mind.Depositor with clips and used it for a while, I found a small problem but it bugs me on regular basis. To insert and pull out the cards, it requires force, no matter how small it is, it creates stress. That's why superior Japanese stationery designs often put into considerations how to reduce user efforts. They call the practice "Universal Design".

So I set out to do a simpler version by using two pieces of leather only. I also have a practice to carry a small notepad or Field Notes to capture to-do inputs temporarily before transferring them to GTD index cards. So I'm adding a slit for the notepad and a slit to store extra blank index cards.

On the left hand side of the cover, I can put a notepad by inserting it to a slit, put blank GTD index cards in the pocket and insert a Field Notes.

On the right hand side I can put two categories of index cards (Personal and Work) into different pockets.

There is also a flap used as a bookmark or enclosure.

The whole thing becomes more compact and functional. It requires less effort to use, it is a simpler design with pleasant leather as the only material, I'm so happy with it. I especially like the color contrast of the outer white and inner brown. So check out the sections below and learn how to create your own.

I lied.

Like Fata Morgana, this isn't what I'm using, so much as a prototype of what I'd like to use. Imagine if Launchy popped up with a broad HUD like this - like an ultra-light version of Dashboard. Between that and the taskbar - which I toggled off in this shot, but would probably keep visible in practice - I'd have very few unsatisfied desires.

Full-size view recommended for this one.

- Wallpaper: Bloom.

- Rainmeter theme: Enigma, modified.

- Icons: "ecqlipse 2", modified.

- Launchy.

- Yod'm 3D 1.4.

In the near future, I'd like to try a fuller, situation room-esque config in tribute to jacquesblondes' submission this morning. So maybe I'll think of this as a temporary exorcism of my minimalist muses.

This is my desktop, a pretty organized one. The template isn't actually mine. A friend sent it to me, I just don't know where did he found it, but worth sharing cause of its ingenuity, though.

A closer look—here you can see a few extra details. The desk is actually made of a desk and a dresser pushed together, and the cord to the logitech charger is hidden by squeezing into the seam. The speaker stands were made with few screws, washers, nuts, and some pieces of metal available at most hardware stores.

My old desktop before i switched to windows 8. my first time spending time modifying font sizes and colors for something unique.

Uses a number of things from rain meter.

Modified Serenity for the clock, date, and chronophage and system info.

customize.org/rainmeter/skins/87801

modified Trans rounded for the weather

customize.org/rainmeter/skins/41754

i can't remember or find what internet meter i have, but i know i modified that too, i just know its title is "black' and there's also a "white" version.

as for the task bar the icons (which to find out what they were i had to REALLY dig) is iconpack2 by aablab.

i think my start orb was this...maybe, maybe not...

joaofernandojfmx.deviantart.com/art/Start-Orb-Windows-8-N...

and the desktop theme was called Slave, i changed the header text to blue along with some other colors to help it match better.

guillendesign.deviantart.com/art/SLAVE-for-Windows-Seven-...

and the wallpaper is actually cycling through a bunch of darker, and night themed wallpapers so the text doesn't fall into the background.

but this wallpaper was featured on life hacker somewhere before :D

Also note a number of icon have a little tab over them, thats bins holding the bulk of the apps i use.

For LifeHacker Workspace Show & Tell

Should really have tidied up first...

This is yet another picture of my Workspace, but I revamped it yesterday, cleaning drawers, shelfs and well, the, eh... WORKSPACE!

The actual desk is pretty minimalistic

- 2 pen pots, one pot for black pens, and pencils, second pot for colored pens.

- 20" Dell Screen

- Logitech Wireless Keyboard

- Razor Mamba wireless mouse with dock.

- Ipod Touch

This workspace works for me because I do a lot of work on the computer, so I do not want nor need clutter on my desk, It also works for me, because when something comes up and I need space, I know I have it and it's there ready to roll!

As a fellow Lifehacker User/Commenter I think it is my duty to have a minimalistic desktop, after all the advice they gave me, it was not that hard, I will probably take pictures of the 'under desk' to let you guys have a look at my wiring. And a picture of my entire workshelf: desk+ 2 side Storages.

Cheers,

Rolfmaomachizlin.

Video

...with apologies for the terrible framerate; my 3-year-old laptop CPU is not a big fan of Jing. The actual cube rotates at about 10 FPS.

- - - - - - -

This cube, with my Arcs skin superimposed on one side, was created by Alex2539 as an experimental demonstration of Rainmeter's graphical capabilities. Rather took my breath away when it popped up on my screen. Alex is brilliant at integrating complex mathematics into Rainmeter; his work made a number of Enigma skins possible.

This skin uses zero external images or resources; it is generated entirely using color gradients, numerical calculations, and live transformation matrices. It is made possible by the newest Rainmeter beta, which now includes primitive support for "dynamic variables" - setting object properties to ever-changing values and having them update in realtime.

While this is really just a demonstration - I'm sure the future will bring a more refined version - it's entirely usable. With the math already done for you, it's easy to add meters to any face of the cube just by adding the following lines:

DynamicVariables=1

Hidden=[Show#]

TransformationMatrix=[MeasureA#];[MeasureB#];[MeasureC#];[MeasureD#];[MeasureTX#];[MeasureTY#]

where # is the face of the cube (1-6) on which the meter is to appear.

Try it for yourself (really, please do - the motion is much smoother than it appears in the video). You'll need:

- The latest Rainmeter Beta (r192 or higher). [Edit: looks like people are having problems with this on 192. I'm looking into it, but for the moment, consider yourself warned.]

- Cube skin by Alex2539, modified with Arcs meters.

And that's it. :)

Well, I may be just a little slow in uploading this desktop (*whistles innocently* - you mean it's not June anymore?) but better late than never. No major changes, just fiddling with the colours, fonts and wallpapers.

Like? Dislike? Thoughts? Comments?

As usual, want to know anything - just ask (it will make me get off my ass and find out the info)

What my work-space (at least, the virtual one) looks like at work! Yeah, this pool is going to make me clean up my desktop even more, I can tell....Now, if only I could figure out a way to get rid of the undeletable icons that our network insists we keep!

Put this together around the Enigma theme for Rainmeter. I can't remember where I got the wallpaper from though. :( The dock is the lovely Rocketdock and the Trillian skin is Enigma as well, designed to work with the sidebar on the Enigma Rainmeter skin.

The monitors are slightly different sizes, so it makes the taskbars look weird when I take a screenshot. Looks perfectly fine to me when I am sitting here looking at it.

For the past several years, my family has spent a week, in early January, at the Club Med village in Punta Cana, on the southwestern shore of the Dominican Republic. (Our first visit to Club Med was back in 1985, and some photos of last year's trip can be seen here.)

This year's visit coincided with the awful earthquake that struck Port-au-Prince, Haiti -- about 260 miles away, on the eastern coast of the island of Hispaniola. From what I understand, the fault line went straight west, in our direction, but then cut south at approximately the border between Haiti and the Dominican Republic. In any case, none of the vacationers at Club Med felt even the slightest tremor; we got all of our news of the ensuing events just like everyone else, by watching CNN. But because we expected the capitol city of Santo Domingo to be chaotic and congested with relief efforts, I decided to skip a daylong trip that I had tentatively planned to photograph the churches and markets of what turns out to be the oldest city in the Western hemisphere (settled in 1497 by Christopher Columbus' brother).

In recent years, most of my photographic efforts have focused on the vacationers who fill the beaches and pool -- especially the children, who come from Canada, France, Venezuela, and various other parts of the world besides the United States. So I decided to focus on something else this year, and ... well, you can judge the results for yourself...

My music production/gaming/general purpose computer setup. I mainly use Reaper for my DAW, guitar rig 3 so I can plug my guitars in and record, a condenser mic (not pictured) for vocals/acoustic guitar, NI Komplete for various keyboard VSTs, and Garritan Steinway for my main piano VST. The hardware to the left of the keyboard is the NI Audio Kontrol 1 and NI Kore 2. The speakers are a pair of KRK RP6 and a KRK K10S for the sub. Keyboard=Studiologic SL990XP. Keyboard tray slides in for easy piano access. There is LED rope lighting behind the desk of course (thanks lifehacker!). The monitors are 2x 22" mounted on arms so that they can be easily rotated and repositioned. "Smart" power strip that shuts all gear off when computer is shut down.

An intermediary shot of the office, still using the old crappy case in this photos. Now using a 22" Dell monitor with a 19" Dell Monitor rotated to portrait.

Ikea desk and storage additions.

My new pegboard layout with the wires attached by Velcro straps to make it easy to add remove things. Fan to keep networking stuff cool. and lots of other things.

This is my desktop. Lots of stuff to do, but not overwhelming.

Alright, so questions answered. Thanks caelyx for answering srossi's question. That is the correct water widget. I love it. nparker13, TVTad is a background rss reader that integrates with your torrent client. It uses the backend of some of the best tv torrent sites out there to automatically get the rss feeds and download the torrents for you. You can get that here www.tvtad.tk/ . And roboaustin, I got the iTunes in my taskbar by rightclicking my taskbar, then going to toolbars and selecting the iTunes. Then everytime I minimize iTunes, it drops down like that. It is the same way for Windows Media Player.

Here's the mount with my old Droid X. The rubber from the cord really holds the phone securely.

Handed out at Saturday's walk... Everyone adorned the pins immediately, so I assume they were liked the most. I'm curious to know what the stickers ended up on, at home?

It's not too late to get your own! Mark your calendar for the morning of the second Saturday of every month, and join our photo walk (in Lincoln, Nebraska).

Also, this shot was taken while experimenting with a DIY $10 Macro Photo Studio (I spent $3, actually), using only outdoor light through a window.

I don't know why, but somehow it seems surprising to me that nuns in an ancient city like Rome would be talking on a cell phone. There's obviously nothing wrong about it ... but still ...

These photos were taken during a week in Rome, at the beginning of December 2008. I was participating in a computer conference, but had some free time at the beginning and end of the trip; unfortunately, the weather was not very cooperative, and my photography efforts were sometimes interrupted by rain...

Here is a wallpaper, inspired by the AMC show Mad Men! After watching five episodes straight with my girlfriend, I was inspired to have my desktop reflect my favorite show. Mad Men always makes me feel creative and productive, and thats what I want in a desktop.

Im running Windows 7 (with the Glass Onion visual style) with Rainmeter

-- WP7 is the bar and the rss reader

-- A very heavily edited version of the SimpleMedia clock is my timekeeper and weather ticker

-- Enigma for uptime, battery, network

-- GoogleBar for the Googler

-- Custom Don Draper office wallpaper

Hope you guys like it!

Designing a Year 1 Plan for a start-up project. I had to go lo-fi. Please note: I've created a group called Evernote Playground, and invite you to post your Evernote experiments there.

Inspired by images found on flickr, I left the computer behind in favor of breaking my One Year Plan for the Alumni Mentor Program at Marylhurst into small components across 5 themes: experiences, partners, research, messaging, AmeriCorps. Each of these themes is examined across 4 terms of Year 1, which starts in Sep 08. Outside the frame are some broader targets and ideas for Year 2 and Year 3.

I executed this project on my office floor at work - everyone who walked by commented on my technique. It was funny to hear that most people reflected on how organized I was and that it looked like "work is getting done!" I'd been thinking what a nut I was, and how working like this was way-fun and reminded me of coloring on the floor when I was a kid! I've tapped into my inner-organizational-geek child.

Seeing how others have worked using this component method encouraged me to experiment with this process - thanks to folks who share their ways of working!!! Old dogs can learn new tricks. Note to self: choose heavier stock once this supply is gone! Luckily no dogs wandered in (it's happened before).

Taken from above, standing in my office chair, with my a717 Samsung cam phone.

Please see the next photo for the description :D

This was created following a tutorial that I read here to give pictures a cinematic effect.

Sox are up ten and a half games in the AL East. Unreal.

Edit: Enigma for Rainmeter now available.

Another minor update to the Lightning Sunset series. I've been experimenting with Rainmeter, and have managed to duplicate and (in my opinion) improve upon my Samurize config. I don't expect to look back.

I strongly encourage you to view this full-size, to get a good look at Rainmeter's gorgeous anti-aliasing.

I'm still using D-Color and Xentient, but the truth is I do prefer a clean, iconless desktop when I can manage it.

- - - - - - -

I realize this gradual progression isn't very interesting for most people, so I'm putting together some ideas for a completely different interface. I'll be dusting off some of my old Samurize experiments for it (probably with Rainmeter ports to come). It'll also be white. Just for fun.

Theme:

- CleanGlass VS. Requires patched uxtheme.dll - patcher here.

- Wallpaper: "clouds" on Social Wallpapering.

- Cube Wallpapers: Temple Street Sky by Mandolux. It's a single seamless skyscape that spans four desktops - ideal, in other words, for a cube. Unlike karindalziel, I use my virtual desktops not as "stations" but as a single cohesive workspace. To each his own, of course.

Startups:

- Autohotkey.

- Launchy.

- Yod'm 3D 1.4.

- D-Color.

- Taskbar Shuffle.

- Start Killer.

Programs usually running:

- Rainmeter. Please see here for a more in-depth explanation of why I made the switch. You can download the skin by clicking the link at the top of this post.

- CD Art Display. I'm still on the lookout for an iTunes plugin for Rainmeter. For the moment, I've taken a CAD skin and made it blend right in with the rest of the Rainmeter layout. It wasn't hard, but I'd be happy to walk you through it.

- Google Desktop.

Feel free to ask questions, as always. This is how I have fun.
