Here you can really see the space limitations of being in the top of the house.
The sloped roof is the main reason for the floor bed. That and I just like it that way.
I started numbering my eggs because I have always been bad with math. This is why I went to MIT and majored in History. The fact they come in boxes of 15 instead of 12 in Denmark is killing me! Now I always know how many eggs I have left! Thanks to my sharp mind I will never run out of eggs again.
Day Bag
The point of this bag is to get me through the day. I usually have a bag or toolbox close by as well for generalized storage and quick cleanup, but mostly these bags are used for things that I rarely use or don't need all the time. The effect gives me places that I can drop off things that I'm not going to need, and leaves me to have only the essentials with me.
The size of this particular bag is nice because it's so limited, I can only really afford to carry things that I'm going to use. I might switch the psp for an ipod nano 5g if i'm planning on going to the park or the gym.
Having two smartphones allows me to keep both pretty clean and uncluttered. The Note is for calls, maps, evernote, and all things utility. The S3 is an alternative gaming machine, used for google hangouts, and is the device that I normally hand off when kids in the family want to play with my phone.
I also use hair ties for just about everything because they're a lot nicer than rubberbands to hold my stuff together. 22c in particular is where I hook my keys and waterbottle if I'm walking a ways. This is connected to the strap. The ones on the wallet hold a credit card in place, especially if I'm strapped for cash and I want to use one card over another.
Finally, I'll actually use my bluetooth headset. I'll initiate a tasker sequence using my pebble and dictate notes while driving, or if I'm just brainstorming and the words just won't come out on paper.

UPDATE: Download my Flip Clock Rainmeter port off my website: architectrio.com/projectvirus.html - CD Art Display skins now uploaded as well. Thanks for the feature Lifehacker!
Just a new concept I'm playing around with. Inspired by an old desktop by Skarhead187. Information task bars that are always visible aren't too useful to me as I'm constantly minimizing windows before opening another application. Leaving this information behind the application I'm using doesn't decrease functionality for me. Got a couple more ideas for this theme that I'll throw in later.
Progams:
Snackr:
- Scrolling Rss Feed
Rainmeter:
- Personal port of Fliqlo screensaver as first seen by Skarhead187
- Moxaweather
- HUD Vision horizonal calendar
- Enigma system stats
CD Art Display:
- Displays music information from iTunes
Objectdock:

I was somewhat surprised to see this guy leaning against a bicycle stand, propping up his laptop in the bright afternoon sunlight. What could he be doing here, on the east side of Broadway between 80th and 81st Street?
I suppose I could have asked him, but he looked pretty focused on what he was doing ... so I looked around for an explanation. Aha, yes, there it was, right behind me: one of the many Starbucks coffeeshops in the neighborhood. Starbucks has a publicly-accessible Wifi network, which most people use indoors (that's the whole point, obviously: you go inside, buy yourself a ridiculously expensive latte, and then sit there and sip it while you surf the Web). But this guy had figured out that he could access the signal from outside, and was probably too cheap to go indoors and pay for a cup of coffee.
I'm sad to report that his laptop was a Dell computer, rather than a classy Mac Powerbook that I would have preferred to see ...

**********************
This is part of an evolving photo-project, which will probably continue throughout the summer of 2008, and perhaps beyond: a random collection of "interesting" people in a broad stretch of the Upper West Side of Manhattan -- between 72nd Street and 104th Street, especially along Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue.
I don't like to intrude on people's privacy, so I normally use a telephoto lens in order to photograph them while they're still 50-100 feet away from me; but that means I have to continue focusing my attention on the people and activities half a block away, rather than on what's right in front of me.
I've also learned that, in many cases, the opportunities for an interesting picture are very fleeting -- literally a matter of a couple of seconds, before the person(s) in question move on, turn away, or stop doing whatever was interesting. So I've learned to keep the camera switched on (which contradicts my traditional urge to conserve battery power), and not worry so much about zooming in for a perfectly-framed picture ... after all, once the digital image is uploaded to my computer, it's pretty trivial to crop out the parts unrelated to the main subject.
For the most part, I've deliberately avoided photographing bums, drunks, drunks, and crazy people. There are a few of them around, and they would certainly create some dramatic pictures; but they generally don't want to be photographed, and I don't want to feel like I'm taking advantage of them. I'm still looking for opportunities to take some "sympathetic" pictures of such people, which might inspire others to reach out and help them. We'll see how it goes ...
The only other thing I've noticed, thus far, is that while there are lots of interesting people to photograph, there are far, far, *far* more people who are *not* so interesting. They're probably fine people, and they might even be more interesting than the ones I've photographed ... but there was just nothing memorable about them.
Speed tip: Use a long chopstick or a ruler to make individual portions of ground foods right in freezer bags, so you can break off just as much as you need when cooking small amounts. Full details and variations here.
I usually create desktops that are a bit more slick and less... human, but I couldn't help myself after finding the screengrab (from the movie Easy A starring Emma Stone).

This is the first desktop that I am submitting to this pool. League of Legends is one of my favorite games, so I thought that I would incorporate it into my second attempt at a Rainmeter desktop. The background image is Diana, one of the many champions in League. While I do not play her in the least, I thought that this image fit the bill of the look that I was going for.
I hope you all enjoy it! Comments are more than welcome.

I found this cool Polaroid making app on lifehacker.com.. That is all it takes for me to get distracted for 10 minutes theses days.
Check it out. www.poladroid.net/
Update: for those of you who called me out on the extra work of the polaroid.. what can I say.. "Busted" So to be fair.. here is how I did it. I do these little recordings for clients all the time. You might get something out of it.
Cam
Galison 4x6 accordion file in which I keep my cards. My system evolved from a checklist grid inspired by Edward O'Connor's personal unit tests, Ben Franklin's weekly table of virtues, templates from DIY Planner and the original Hipster PDA all via Lifehacker.
After creating the original mind.Depositor with clips and used it for a while, I found a small problem but it bugs me on regular basis. To insert and pull out the cards, it requires force, no matter how small it is, it creates stress. That's why superior Japanese stationery designs often put into considerations how to reduce user efforts. They call the practice "Universal Design".
So I set out to do a simpler version by using two pieces of leather only. I also have a practice to carry a small notepad or Field Notes to capture to-do inputs temporarily before transferring them to GTD index cards. So I'm adding a slit for the notepad and a slit to store extra blank index cards.
On the left hand side of the cover, I can put a notepad by inserting it to a slit, put blank GTD index cards in the pocket and insert a Field Notes.
On the right hand side I can put two categories of index cards (Personal and Work) into different pockets.
There is also a flap used as a bookmark or enclosure.
The whole thing becomes more compact and functional. It requires less effort to use, it is a simpler design with pleasant leather as the only material, I'm so happy with it. I especially like the color contrast of the outer white and inner brown. So check out the sections below and learn how to create your own.

A place for work... And a place for relaxation...
A long day at work, a lot of work around the house, combined with a few requests to see the entire workspace - well. Here is a bit more.
In addition to the macbook and dual monitors, below the TV is my (media)server setup. Mac Mini, with a total of 5 external Western Digital MyBook drives with a combined 6,3 TB of storage.
Yes. There are two airport extremes, one 1st generation and one of the latest generation. Yes. They are on their side, just to provide some more cooling. They create a LOT of heat when stacked on top of each other.
Below that, is the NAD amplifier, with a cambridge audio DAC which is connected to the Mac Mini via USB to provide a lot better audio.
I made this low tech DIY smartphone camera stand out of two binder clips and a business card, and Lifehacker published it. lifehacker.com/5875653/make-a-simple-smartphone-dock-out-...
I made this desk out of an Ikea closet organizer. I needed something with a pretty small footprint and the dimensions of the organizer fit the bill. I just added a keyboard tray. This system has two added benefits. I can turn it into a standing desk without too much difficult, and I can add storage as needed. The chair is a fully adjustable Sayl from Herman Miller. This chair is advertised as inexpensive, but is more than double the base price once one adds all of the ergo adjustments. I had an Aeron for several years before this and much prefer the Sayl for its adjustability, size, and colours.
After: 3 days, 5 friends, a whole lot of stuff. A quilter's paradise.
Read how we did the $1,200 "Quilty As Charged" Garage Makeover on the Atwater Village Newbie blog.
It took me 18 months to finish the extension on my home. Even then, with a newborn son I wasnt in the financial position to finish my mancave of the way I wanted it.
I got there eventually though and now its a place I love to spend my time, either editing photos playing computer games or reading a book.
I designed the bookshelves on google sketch up before i even started the house and my father in law who is a joiner built them for me. The lefthand most shelf is hinged and on caster wheels with my closet full of junk behind it.
The desk is actually a ladies vanity table because finding new versions of old fashioned desks is harder than you would think.
I've spent the past day making heavy modifications to some Rainmeter scripts, and this is the result. I've got a thing for the Rockwell font at the moment.
EDIT: Thanks, Lifehacker!
EDIT2: I've uploaded the scripts; see the link in the comments. As for the wallpaper, it's a modified version of Eos by elusive.
EDIT3: Wow, thanks for the follow-up post Gina!

Does anyone out there have any experience with Magic Lantern
I work from home so I spend a lot of time in this room. We are currently renting and did not want to paint so the color had to come from accessories. I settled on green as you can see.
It's bright and cheery which is keeps me from going crazy looking at plans all day (I work for a company that manufactures custom animal enclosures for zoos, veterinarians etc.)
Almost all of the furnishings came from Ikea, so it's all affordable. Still need to clean up some wires but it's getting there. There are notes in the other photos if anyone is curious.

No major changes this month. Added a monitor riser for the workshop (on the left), a set of drawers I inherited and finally got my files back from the accountants, so they have gone back to where they should be.
Jordon gave me a "go bag" for our anniversary. Lifehacker has been raving about them for a while and they are bad that is full of your essentials so you are prepared to go at a moments notice and do something cool.
He put it together himself and picked up a canvas bag at Quinn the Eskimo. It's a parachuters shoulder bag so if I need to jump out of an airplane, I'll be fine.
In it he got me a case for my iPod Nano and a new LowePro case for my beloved (and aging) Fuji Finepix J10 camera. It's battery was dying so he got me a replacement battery as well so I can take photos all day now. Since I am horrible with keeping track of SD cards, he got me an Optex media holder in it as well.
In the next compartment was some pens and a new journal to keep notes on my adventures. For energy there was a Jersey Milk chocolate bar.
He also put in a funky water bottle and a Starbucks Tea Press. In case I got bored, he bought me a National Georgraphic Travel magazine (which just listed Saskatoon as a great place to travel to)
I've worked very hard on this office and added several custom built items... visit danielheth.com/office for my complete write-up.

This is my first attempt messing around with geektool, however I'm pretty satisfied with what I have done. Just leave a comment if you have any questions about it and I'll let you know. :)

In GeekTool: sh [location/]news.sh -[number] i.e. sh ~myname/bin/news.sh -4
The location is just where the news.sh file is located and the number is
how many post you want shown. It is possible to change the RSS feed
by opening news.sh and changing the url inside. Make sure the new url
does not have feed:// before it, if so just erase it.

LIFEHACKER FEATURED ME... THANK YOU SO MUCH!
This is the current desktop setup I use. I find it's very usable and all the lighting you see in the photo (minus the desk lamp sticking out to the left) was only fifty dollars added together.
Coolest part is the IKEA Dioder LED strips. There are two behind the monitor (stuck on diagonally in an upside-down V shape), one under the desk for keyboard lighting, and one hanging down from the top of that vase-shaped lamp.
The reason for a LED strip under the lamp is that the lamp seems to block off the light to the top part of it because of its shape. To compensate, I dangle a LED strip over the top and route the wire through it and to the bottom.
On the desk there's a Harmon/Kardon 2.1 speaker set, a 24-inch SyncMaster P2570 screen, a generic work lamp, and an Upek Eikon fingerprint reader. The keyboard is a Kensington SlimType (a joy to type with) and a Logitech MX wireless mouse.
The entire setup is powered by my HP computer. Out of this picture to the right is another desk (my dad's) with a 22-inch screen and a HP computer... other than that, there's nothing much to tell.
(Lifehacker editors: if I do get picked for feature on the website (YIPPEE) then it'd be nice to have a mention that I'm a 12-year old (shh) "web designer" with a website at brandonwang.org)
Londa and I were reading the lifehacker posts on top photography tricks and she wanted to try one of the examples of covering the face and drawing attention to the eyes while leaving the rest to the imagination. I thought it turned out pretty cool.
I have no idea what this guy was looking at, but he was certainly staring intently into his Macbook laptop.

Late in the afternoon of St. Patrick's Day in 2009, I walked into Bryant Park, which is located behind the New York Public Library, between 41st and 42nd Street, facing Avenue of the Americas. There were a few drunken revelers (most of whom looked like high-school kids from New Jersey), and several people basking in the sun. I concentrated mostly on the latter...
First and foremost, I can now officially announce the release of Enigma 1.1 to the Lifehacking community. :)
As I described in the preview, I've added:
-RSS reader.
-Gmail notifier.
- System/battery graphics using ecqlipse 2 icons.
- Tray clock replacement.
- Quick-edit button for Notes.
- Application launcher. Useless to anyone with Launchy or StandaloneStack, but it's pretty, and way too much fun to play with. (You can see what it looks like in the deviantArt screenshot.)
- Assorted doodads and revisions.
- Fixed the Location bug plaguing Enigma and HUD.Vision.
As for this shot, it's nothing dramatically different from my Leaf, so I'll redirect you there for all software/themes. My new toy of the week is the aforementioned StandaloneStack, courtesy of skarhead187. I loves them, precious. Right now, I've added a bunch of them to my Launchy directory, but my real plan is to assign some keyboard shortcuts to them using Authotkey - I'm thinking Win+F1, F2, etc. The creators of Enso once mentioned that the one shortcoming of active-input app launchers like Launchy, Executor and Enso is that you can't effectively browse your options. The Start Menu, quite frankly, is an effective tool for that, and I still use it for that purpose regularly. But I think a method using StandaloneStack may eliminate even that need. I already categorize the programs in my start menu (Accessories, Programs, Media, etc.), so it's a natural progression to assign a hotkey/stack combo to each one.
And after that? They're shortcuts. You can do anything with shortcuts and batch files. You can nest them, for heaven's sake! You could design an interface that used literally nothing but these stacks.
Sadly, classes are starting up again, and I have some other non-Desktop-y projects to work on, so God knows when I'll get to that.

Back in the spring of this year (2009), I decided to pay a visit to Washington Square Park (pictures of which are available here), having earlier stumbled upon some photos I had taken there 40 years earlier, in the spring of 1969 (photos of which are included in this album). I was surprised to see that the park was undergoing massive renovation, and that the fountain was closed off; but some construction signs promised that it would be open once again in the summer ...
So this past weekend, I decided to venture back to the park once again. The renovation was indeed finished; the fountain was operating again, and the warm, sunny weather had attracted throngs of New Yorkers and tourists to spend a pleasant afternoon engaged in all sorts of activities — much of which involved splashing around in the water. But there was also juggling and chess and scrabble, guitar-playing folk-singers and a violinist, two different jazz bands, and an energetic quartet singing old 1950s doo-wop ballads.
I spotted tourists and visitors from Japan, Italy, Scandinavia, and various parts of the U.S. People were sunbathing on various patches of grass around the edge of the park. There were children, students, lovers, families, and old hippies; and there were half a dozen dogs, at least a few of which enjoyed the opportunity to splash in the pool. There was an ice-cream cart and a hot dog stand, and if the park was anything like the old days, there probably at least a few places to buy drugs of every conceivable kind. For those who might have wondered what this place really was like in the "old days," there was a cheerful old guy (named Robert Fogelnest, from what I could find on the Internet) peddling copies of a book titled The Streets of Greenwich Village.
All in all, there was something for just about everyone. If you've got an afternoon free while it's still summer here in New York City, I highly recommend a stroll through Washington Square Park. Remember: summer won't last forever...
