How did I know that it would come to this?

ST-117 is definitely running amok with his present that he got recently. Just wish ST-498 comes back from his adventures in time soon, maybe he can put ST-117 back in line...

It had been some time since the miniaturised Incredible Shrinking Iron Man had run into his fellow Avenger, the Mantis, who was peeved that her friend and colleague had not kept in better touch. Mantis had put on a little weight since their last close encounter, which was only natural, since she was now eating for 200....

You could cut the air with repulsors or foreclaws.....

MANTIS:

iron man

you not call this one

(bad tony!)

IRON MAN:

well, so now

you bite my head off?

oh, wait, no!

I took this one with the old Olympus point and shoot, as opposed to the Pentax SLR. This was a climb-up-a-ladder shot, to where the wee beasty was sitting on the wall. She was quite friendly towards Tony, and after a little bit of puzzled antenna grooming, stalked back out through the open door of the (since demolished) house we used to live in.

En nuestra aventura por tierras chinas, Wall-E se trajo a un par de amigos. Así que antes de que estos se fueran a desear suerte a sus nuevos dueños, estuvo jugando un ratito con ellos.

"S'okay Officer...I know I'm in no shape to fly it home....."

Having sculpted the new S.H.I.E.L.D helicarrier flying headquarters (as seen in Marvel Comics "The Mighty Avengers" Issue #1, May 2005) I decided it needed a trailer to dock in so it could be transported when grounded. Also, it would make for a nicer display than just tossing the "Thunder Child" in amongst my other custom built Iron Man toys.

It only took a couple of hours to throw together out of the parts box. I decided to go with tank treads taken from an unidentified armoured vehicle for a NASA rocket crawler type look. Some other major components came from a battleship (the "Tirpitz") kit that I've been raiding for spares for years. There's also odd bits of broken art pens and the tow bar is made from some kind of Robotech type figure's gun. The cradle that's clamped onto the hull is a cable holder and fits perfectly and is very secure, allowing me to pick up the whole model without always having to touch the ship and dirty up the paint.

Tow bar? Well, yah, I figured it looks Marvel Comicy/Thunderbirdy making the trailer a towed vehicle rather than self powered. I'm still working on the more conventional tug/support vehicle but for this shot went with an idea I had to use the Iron Man Monster Truck to haul the whole rig....

What a beast that Monster Truck is! Working suspension for those chunky tyres, roll back and release drive! Just the brute for pulling a helicarrier. The Monster Truck toy was produced in 2002, in Series #1 of a general Marvel Comics Super Hero themed line licenced by Maitso International Inc, a Chinese based maker of die-cast vehicles. They also made a pick-up truck and a prime mover Iron Man tractor and trailer rig.

I don't quite know why I put the Iron Man Mighty Beanz collectible in the truck tray...just seemed to make sense at the time! Curiously, the company that made Mighty Beanz, Moose Enterprises, has its H.Q here in Melbourne, Australia, in East Bentleigh, only a stone's throw from where I sit now! The wee characters have little magnetic spheroids inside them that keep them upright but also make them 'jumping beans' and the toys, which seem to be pretty collectible, started being produced back in 2002. They hit the U.S in 2003 but are no longer being made. This one's from Marvel Comic Super Heroes Series #1 and is #9 in a set of 56, released in 2004.

I shot the piccy against a blue sky and then pulled the elements out and dropped them onto a plate of a cityscape I did some time ago. The road and low wall are built up out of concrete paving and building facade elements suitably tweaked.

"Share this with no one! The Federation would pay dearly to obtain these plans..."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Having determined the scale of the model in comparison to the full sized space-ship and knowing the dimensions of the Medium Density Fibreboard sheets stocked at the local hardware warehouse I was able to accurately transfer the panel shapes and sizes from the model to small pieces of paper. I cut the shapes out, shuffled them around a bit and made scale templates that minimised wastage of the M.D.F. Because I knew I would end up with quiet a few components that would be confusingly similar I was quite particular about labelling each piece and transferring all orientation marks.

CAROL- "So I said to Cap, You know how to whistle, don't you, Steve? You just put your lips together and blow...."

TONY- "Everyone wants to be Tony Stark. Even I want to be Tony Stark"

CAROL- "Find me an Iron Man who's interesting enough to fly with and I'll be happy."

TONY- "My father used to say, 'Let them see the suit and not you.' "

BOTH- "Sorry....what did you say?"

Office romances. So unprofessional. And yet....Tony Stark and Carol Danvers do strike sparks off each other every time they meet and especially so when they've got each others backs when teamed up in the mighty Avengers.

Iron Man and Ms. Marvel.

Whew.

"Evil doers prepare to be evil don'ters."

Meanwhile, the top is up, the sun is shining and the open road's ahead....

" 'Nuff said."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After a little consideration I decided to go with this pic as my Valentine's Day shot for 2009.

Gail and I went for a drive in the country and had fun shooting a series of travelling toys. Specifically, Ms. Marvel and one of the Iron Man movie figures sitting in the Hasbro Iron Man Roadster. I held them up on the dashboard and shot through their windscreen and ours. Experimented a lot with altering the depth of field and then played with the footage afterwards in Photoshop. This particular frame is a composite of a sequence shot on the run out of Melbourne, just south of the Docklands on the run up to the approaches of the West Gate Bridge. The windshield of the toy car is steeply raked and when bouncing around throws off all kinds of interesting and hard to predict distortions.

It was a fun trip, I felt a bit like we were filming a couple of stars in a classic movie, hence the cross purposes dialogue filched from Cary Grant and Lauren Bacall from various contexts.

The toy car is configured for left hand drive, U.S style, which is wrong for Australia. Then again, if Tony built the car, then he maybe doesn't NEED a steering wheel at all, and can perhaps control it via his armour's interface anyway.....I wonder if he's told Carol that yet? ;)

LOL. Obviously, this is well before that time Carol punched through Iron Man's chestplate, and, y'know, killed him....

TRANSLATED FROM THE KLINGONAASE-

"THAT WAS NO LADY, THAT WAS MY KNIFE..."

Klingon female: "HEY!! Handsome, that's MY Heart!!! Hunt your own trophies!!"

Klingon male: "What?!! Oh. You are indeed correct Fair One. An honest mistake! I thought it was one of my Kills. But stay, there are more than enough Humans to go around. I will share MY heart with you."

Klingon female: "I'd wager you say that to ALL the females, you heartbreaker you!"

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You know, I think I'm getting the hang of this human Valentine's Day ritual!

This set up was thrown together in my light tent. The backdrop is a sheet of leather, and the stage is made from polystyrene foam, plaster and assorted rocky crystals from my mineral box. There's a fair bit of photoshopping going on especially rescaling Milady Klingon, additional lense flares and a bit of jiggery pokery with the food colouring blood to enhance it.

The three dead Feddies are all Riker variants....ohdearhowsadnevermind!

(BEST VIEWED LARGE AND FROM AN ALTERNATE DIMENSION NOT PLAGUED BY ZOMBIES)

In the early days of the apocalyptic Zombie Outbreak Tony Stark's employees at Stark International were startled when the C.E.O called a company meeting to launch the latest model of his Iron Man armour.....

It seemed odd that the Chief would pull them off the anti-Zombie munitions production line just to indulge in a corporate 'High Five' but how could they refuse Mr Stark's warm, personal invitation?

"I'd like to have you all for lunch....."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yatta!!

Well, here he is at long last True Believers, my Iron Zombie action figure, inspired by the Marvel Zombie comic book titles.

Mwuhahaha!

Before I unveil the horror in all its macabre gory I thought I'd have a little fun first, considering how much work I had to do to get to this stage.

It feels like it would have taken less time to make a full size costume instead of this 7cm high plastic toy!

But, there y'go, such is life. Or, in this case, Unlife...

Anyway, as I was sculpting the character it occurred to me that if I shot pictures from a discrete angle and with the figure's helmet visor down that you wouldn't be able to tell that he had gone Zombie....though there's a subtle hint if you look through the eyeslits and see that the whites of his eyes are just that....all whites!

A word about the paint job. As you know I cast the figure from TC-808 A/B 78 Shore D white urethane plastic. After refining the components, sanding and cleaning I base coated them with Tamiya grey spray primer. The signature metallic red is more Tamiya spray, and the iconic gold is Champion Sprayon 24 kt Gold. I like the extreme shine that the Champion spray produces over most other metallic gold paints. The uni-beam emitter on the chest plate gave me a bit of trouble. Intially I painted it with white acrylic and then coated it with clear FIMO sculpture glaze. It's been a while since I used the FIMO glaze and forgot an old lesson, that it can sometimes cause the base coat to crack, which it did in this case. Although I liked the surprise 'shattered' effect that created it wasn't what I wanted so I cleaned the lens out with a craft knife and started again, this time coating it with Liquitex High Gloss Varnish.

I'm pleased with the way the figure articulates, having pinned it with sections cut from fine aluminium tubing and also a number of nylon/brass ball and socket joints. The articulations are relatively loose, though it would be easy to make them tighter, and I may do that if it becomes an issue during photography. However, I appreciate the 'like a puppet with its strings cut' effect that the loose joints create for certain applications. It's easy enough to jam the joints for posing, so, no worries!

For this picture I drew up a version of the "Stark International" logo that I saw in the 2007 Issue #2 of the Marvel Adventures comic. It's drawn in photoshop and then printed out on gloss card. It had just the configuration to backdrop the pose, though there was a lot of mucking around getting the figure placed in front of it 'just so'. Well, you know the drill!

For a wonder, I refrained from sticking a repulsor ray blast flare in the palm of Iron Zombie's raised hand. A rare example of restraint on my part!

Lighting wise I used a desk lamp high and to one side and no flash and of course shot with my dinky but sturdy Olympus Camedia C-450 Zoom.

TONY'S REALLY LOST IT!!!

Nursing more than the usual walloping hangover, Stark ruefully admitted it to himself.

He'd been drunk while flying the armour again.

Last night, returning from an International mission, weaving his way across the sky he'd collided with something out over the ocean..

At the time, he hadn't even been sure it had really happened, it had all blurred by at alcohol fuelled supersonic speed.

Now, in the clear light of day...the damning evidence lay close to hand.

He'd have to get rid of it. Erase his flight recorder. Use the vast resources of Stark International to eliminate investigations...and, have another drink.

-----------------------------------------------

This set up was done on the Stark Lab set, slightly redressed. I drew the Oceanic Airlines logo in Photoshop and printed it out on heavy, gloss stock so it would look like aluminium, and backed it with silver foil so it would show a little like metal backing beneath paint. Not that it does much, but it seemed like a good idea at the time.

Again, this is the Silver Centurian Marvel legends Iron Man armour, which has the best articulation of all the I.M figures I've got, except for War Machine. Speaking of whom, that transparent plastic like arm thingy in the shot is the flying stand that holds the War Machine figure up in the air for display. I reckon it looks much better here than plugged into poor Rhodey's arse!

I've done a wee bit of photoshopping, mostly working on Tony's face; raising an eyebrow a bit, sharpening it up slightly. Adding a slightly ill looking cast to it.. I've also replaced the Old Fortran bottle with a sharper image I took seperately, and also added some light highlights to it. Subtle effects more than 'special' really, but still important to the composition.

I experimented with silvered light reflectors on this one, to try and bring out certain highlights and to 'ironically' wash out some of the reflected glare from the white Oceanic flight wreckage.

Which is, of course, Oceanic Flight 815, from the telly series, Lost. Now y'all know what happened! Tony must have had just enough wit to slow the fall of the wreck with his repulsors, which explains how anyone survived the plane coming apart in mid-air at all.

Sorry, I'm a geek, it's my job!

Doing T’ai Chi puts me in a state of utmost bliss. Connecting with my chi is so balancing, invigorating, and peaceful.

I am perfectly balanced when finished. I could do T’ai Chi for hours and while doing it, time seems to stop; I am at peace and feel as if I am one with the Tao, if that were possible.

(Tao denotes something that is both the source and the driving force behind everything that exists. It is ultimately ineffable: "The Tao that can be told is not the eternal Tao.") It is at once the beginning of all things and the way in which all things pursue their course.

I taught Ballerina T’ai Chi. Being a dancer, she caught on quickly. However, we do have to work on her hand positions, though…

"Knight Cycle" (Check out my retakes--similar, but better focused)

Skybridge

Davenport, Iowa

Aside from taking tons of pictures of bald eagles and backyard birds, I've had a creative block for photo ideas around the Quad-Cities in these winter months. One of the relatively new attractions in the Quad-Cities is the Davenport Skybridge:

Destination Quad-Cities article on the Davenport Skybridge

Wikipedia article on the Davenport Skybridge

My previous Skybridge photos were pretty ordinary, or looked like copies of the great photos that many others have captured.

I decided it would be fun to try photographing action figures in the Skybridge to make them even more dynamic. This Batman Knight Cycle is about 7.5 inches from the front tire to the rear tire, so I had to come up with a way to make it appear more life-sized. I laid down on the ground to get a low perspective (made easier by the point-and-shoot Nikon Coolpix P5100's LCD screen), messed around with different camera angles, and used an inexpensive Opteka close-up filter to try to pull off the life-sized illusion. Many of my other Knight Cycle images were sharper, but I liked the perspective in this the best. I might try to replace this with a sharper image at another time, but for now I'm pretty happy with the way this came out.

Feel free to check out my photo of The Terminator action figure on the Skybridge.

A quickie but a Hulking great fun photoshoot!

I used one small torch for lighting a Hulk figure I picked up cheap at a market and arranged a couple of spuds against my camel coloured "Firefly/Serenity" Browncoat. What could be simpler?

I considered actually mashing the 'taters up but decided that I liked the decisive moment more....I think the potential energy has more value than the aftermath would.

Taken January 2019

Clawful enjoys the garden, paticually the feel of this blue flower.

The Blizzard finally stopped once Batman found the main culprit behind it: Mr. Freeze

After accidentally being exposed to miniaturising Pym Particles (T.M) Tony Stark, the Invincible Iron Man, finds himself confronting all manner of challenges in the microworld.

Now Read On!

Iron Man's armour proximity sensors 'pinged' an alarm as the strange creature stalked closer. He felt a rush of anticipation

The exotic green insect and the armoured Avenger both paused, recognising the decisive moment.

Friend?

Foe?

Food?

-----------------------------------------------------

I was working in the backyard when I spotted this tiny mantis slowly moving across the gate. I needed to move the wee beastie to safety before he got squished so I cast around for something soft he could crawl onto to be transported.

I'd only just finished customising this very small Iron Man figure so of course I scuttled off to grab him and the camera.

It was a particularly awkward picture.

The gate was threatening to blow shut, and I was juggling it, the camera and the figure (I'm holding it behind the gate) with too few hands. Doctor Octopus where were you when I needed you? Anyway, it may not be in perfect focus but I was happy to capture what I knew would be a special moment.

The figure, by the way, is a mere 23 mm tall and was 'found' embedded in a Marvel Series Smoby Magic Ball. Smoby is a European toy company, this particular toy hailing from France, though it was made in China. Anyway, I recently purchased two of these from a local Safeway supermarket and cut one open to extract the figure that was embedded in the clear 'rubber' that formed the bouncing ball. The figure itself looked three times as big embedded in the ball, due to the magnifying effect of the clear rubber. It's made from a moderately hard plastic and so I was able to repaint it with enamels a little more neatly than it was originally.

Oh, and yes, this figure is the perfect size to pilot the Iron Manmobile!

I 'figured' that Iron Microman will be the perfect way of combining two of my passions...photographing insects and Iron Man!

The mantis, by the way, was even smaller than Iron Man, I don't think it was more than 15 mm in length, and yes, it is looking at me!

Revisting this piccy, five years later, the gate no longer exists, nor indeed the house or garage in the background. All demolished by the owners. Shame really, it was actually rather a nice house.

NO MANTIDS WERE HARMED IN THE PRODUCTION OF THIS PICTURE

"ARRR, WE BE OUT O' OUR JOHNNY DEPP!"

Caught in the Great Antipodean Storms the plucky crew of the pirate ship, "Horribilus", battled the supernatural Tempest to no avail as they were swept towards the fabled Edge Of The World at World's End. Doomed to die the savage crew of swashbuckling cutthroats yet hurled their rebellious defiance into the brutal teeth of the raging sorcerous maelstrom.

"My compliments to Mr Davy Jones!" Roared Captain Cutlass. "Best he keeps his Locker well guarded, a weather eye on his watery rum 'n batten down his soggy bottomed wenches! Clap on all sails and set course fer Perdition mateys!"

"Arrr! Arrr! Arrr!"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Australia's locked into a long, dreary, dusty drought at present (actually, a default setting really) so when we had a literally gutter-busting, drenching downpour I went a little rain-happy. I was madly hopping round like a kanga with a pocket full of bull-ants!

After I'd got enough buckets set out to collect the water run-off I cast around for something that would look good in the overflowing gutter. Of course, I had a pirate ship handy....as you do.

The picture looks better in sepia than with the ship as garishly plastic

as it is in Primary Colour Land. I was also massively pleased with the way that the raindrops and ripples in the water came out.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was interviewing a sculptor from Pixar and, as usual, had brought in something personal to 'break the ice' and set the interviewee at ease to create a more relaxed and chatty atmosphere. In this case it was my newly finished Iron Zombie sculpture. After the interview, since I was in the studio anyway, I snapped a couple of shots....

I've just noticed that this picture is one of a few that I've got showing the experimental cracked uni-beam on the breastplate. I tried it out for a bit to see what it looked like before scraping it clean and repainting the chest-beam emitter without damage. I found that there was more than enough 'ewwww' factor inherent in the natural Zombieness of the beastie as well as the damage inflicted by the Silver Surfer's cosmic power before Iron Zom and the other Undead Avengers ate the poor bloke.

It's not the first time Zombies have helmed a console at Triple R, of course, as is recorded elsewhere in my photostream....

SHELLHEAD MEETS SHELLBACK

(BEST VIEWED FAMILY SIZED, PAN FRIED AND EXTRA CRISPY)

Tony Stark had been itching for a re-match with the Incredible Hulk ever since he'd tooled up his purpose-built "Hulkbuster" heavy duty armour.

It was time for some Iron Mano-o-Gammamano....

Yessiree!

So, late one night, after yet another marathon binge on the booze, he'd poured himself into his most formidable suit yet and blearily set the armour's A.I targeting for "Mean & Green...."

And then passed out even as the mighty exoskeleton's powerful thrusters kicked in to boost him battlewards.

What happened next was a bit of a martial arts blur.....

Like fighting the Mandarin, Black Widow, Captain America, Iron Fist

and the Swordsman all rolled into one whirling, metal butt kicking, weapon of messy destruction wielding threshing machine.

The feral little bastard popped Tony's armoured hood as if the reinforced helmet was merely the cap on a bottle of no-name firewater.

Tony would've gulped if the Hanzo steel ninjaken blades weren't scissoring his throat with their razored edges.

Waitaminute.

What was that smell?

Pizza !?

Tony had an epiphany.

His on-board water tank was, of course, filled with Sam Adams' Boston brewed Utopias beer.

Maybe they could work something out.....

Cowabunga Iron Dude!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It took me a while to think of an appropriate context in which to deploy the Hulkbuster Iron Man action figure but all it finally took was seeing the new TMNT movie a couple of weeks ago ...

A chance for two of my personal comic icons to meet and beat....

It had to be Leonardo, natch, he's always been My Favourite Mutant.

It's the swords of course. And, well, Leo is just soooo cool. I love that one story where he's ambushed by the whole deadly Foot ninja clan one Christmas and has damn near taken them all down when that mongrel Shredder turns up.....

I didn't have to buy or make a turtle figure, since I still had Leo from the old days, though I did repaint his ninjaken with good silver paint for the blades, gold for the guards and pommel and red and yellow (Irony!) for the hilt wrappings.

The figures are set up on an old aluminium ceiling panel laid on our all purpose light box on my workbench. It's further sidelit with a halogen desk lamp and spotlit selectively with two small torches.

It took a lot of pictures before I got everything more or less the way I wanted it.

But it was worth it in the end...and a whole lot of fun! I could hardly stop chuckling every time I looked into the camera.

I have to wonder though, if the Ooze that created the turtles might not have been Gamma irradiated....quite possible, since the TMNT origin story has the same canister of mutagenic waste that hit them also striking a certain Matt Murdock like character in a homage to Daredevil's own origin....

Well, y'know, I saw that I had enough Amazon action figures to make up a little group photoshoot...the rest is herstory...I started working on this on International Women's Day, 2007, but it took about a week of fiddling to get it to where I wanted it.

Lots of giggling from the girls and falling over and jostling for the best positions. And I lost three fingers somehow....strewth!

I used the usual overhead fluro lights plus a halogen spot and a small torch. Got some nice flares on the blades which I augmented later with lens flare in Photoshop. Did a little PSing with some of the figures too to tweak it.

Didja know that "The Bride" ("Kill Bill") and deadly little Miho from "Sin City" both have Hanzo steel swords? True fictional story!

Normally I wouldn't spit upon Lursa of the House Duras but in this case she does fit into the Warrior Princess category, so, bugger it anyway. She better not stand too close to K'Ehleyr....

The Tomoe Gozen (Gozen is an honourific, by the way, not a name) figure came from a set of cheap toys I found in a shop...she looks the part at least even if she isn't armed here with the traditional naginata spear she was supposedly a master of. I don't know what the toys were supposed to be; probably Spawnish, but I don't wanna know!

It's a good mix for a team I think. They're all scrappers of course but their special skills would add to the mix. WW would be the natural leader, what with her being royalty and having a lot of command experience in the Justice League. Tomoe Gozen would probably make a good 2IC. Eowyn and Arwen both have strong medical skills. Miho would make a fine scout with her Ninja training, as would Buffy. Arwen, Eowyn and Tomoe all have cavalry skills. The two Klingons come from the most advanced technological eras and would have the best skills with advanced weapons and spacecraft, though of course W.W has her Invisible Jet. The Klingons, Miho and W.W with her magic lassoe would all be great at interrogation. W.W and Buffy actually have super powers, and Arwen has a magic pendant. K'Ehleyr has diplomatic skills, Klingon ones, it's true, but she could still be useful for negotiating with...survivours.

Con el calor que está haciendo estos días, Wall-E ha decidido pegarse un chapuzón en la playa

In our trip to Norway, Wall-E is happy with nature on its way to the top of Kjerag in Lysefjord.

Vivien Leigh as Scarlett O’Hara at Twelve Oaks in the movie Gone with the Wind is by Mattel.

The doll’s face sculpt and likeness to Vivien Leigh is uncanny.

DANDYIRON MAN....

Okay, Tony Stark got the idea for the red component of the Iron Man armour's colour scheme from his second favourite hot rod.

And the yellow?

Wellllllll.........

This is the 23 centimetre tall (8 inch) Toy Biz "Famous Cover Series" Invincible Iron Man figure with its distinctive fabric and plastic costume. Not a bad bit of kit, I particularly like the head sculpt. The figure is patterned after the Bob Layton cover illustration of "The Invincible Iron Man", issue #126.

The weeds are the invasively tenacious Arctotheca calendula. Capeweed (also called Cape Dandelion or Cape Marigold) is a native of South Africa and en masse the flowers are actually quite decorative until they escape from their garden beds and EAT your lawn...

From my "Life in Plastic" series

Picard and Worf get ready to board Shuttle 'Goddard' to head back to the Enterprise. Adverse weather conditions had made transporters inoperable.
