Lake Don Pedro Reservoir in California. The drought is getting worse. The lake level has dropped severely. August 2014

Gorgeous lines and shadows of a very large tropical leaf. I believe they call this an "Elephant Ear" leaf. I can see the resemblance. (Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum Gardens in San Jose, CA)

This was the view from our 5-star hotel room (a small tent in the dirt). This is my idea of Heaven. How gorgeous! Just in time for the first snow at Tioga Pass.

Mononchrome capture of Cedar Breaks National Monument at evening. Happy Fence Friday!

A spring moon provided the perfect lighting for this shot of Mt. Whitney and the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains lit up with brilliant Orion setting behind. The Mojave desert is a magnificent place to view stars and the heavens. Excellent clarity, darkness, and wide open views! An astrophotographer's dream. :)

An autumn maple leaf sits alone on a giant stone face in Zion National Park. The brilliant pink and red contrasted against the rust and gold striated sandstone patterns. Found naturally the way it is shown here, just took time to stop and admire nature's work.

A thick fog creates an eerie landscape, fitting for a dark autumn morning.

Back to photo page : Christmastime is here again!

A beautiful spring day in the arid desert southwest reveals splendid color and a great variety of wildflower blossoms.

Lovely baby pomegranates growing in the warm California sunlight about to bring forth luscious fruit for us to eat.

Chainmail and fire, anvil and hammer, metal and heat. The creative elements of a Medieval armorer. HTT!

A heavenly sunrise seemingly catches the red painted sandstone on fire with warm morning light in Zion National Park.

Ruthie is an 8-year-old Mini-Aussie. She loves traveling and the outdoors. She is always quite happy being in Yosemite. :) She is very "wildlife friendly." :) We made sure to train her that way since we do travel far into the National Forests often and do not wish to put her in harm's way, nor the other creatures who call these wonderful places home.

Yosemite National Park is one of our favorite home-away-from-homes. Though dogs are not allowed off leash or on unpaved trails in the Valley, they are most welcome. :) Be responsible pet parents and our fuzzy children will be welcome in more places. :) A great thing happening for those of us who travel with our furry children. :) Thank you, Yosemite!

Note: We are in a designated area allowed for people to take photographs at Glacier Point. Do not go beyond any marked boundaries in Yosemite. It is for your safety, and the environment's. It's not worth your life to get that shot. :)

Wild Dogwood blooms hang over a quiet forested river bathed in the last golden light of the waning evening sun.

Texture and shadow in monochrome light bring out the elegant beauty of this ancient treasure. The beautiful and delicious fruit of the pomegranate has long been a favorite of many cultures for as long as history has been recorded.

Ribbons of striated painted sand grace the slopes of the magnificent Bryce Canyon walls and hoodoos. Each view here is different, and just as marvelous as the first. (Bryce Canyon National Park, UT)

I am deviating from my usual happy-go-lucky nature photos, because this lady is just too much. Oh my, what a scary thing. Glad I had a good lens, I was not getting too close to this. For me it is an achievement, I'm a recovering arachnophobe. :) I don't think I will ever be fully recovered. ;) I just read however, that in most ancient cultures spiders are considered good luck.

A beautiful, magical moment when Mt. Whitney graces us with her majestic presence, peeking out behind a veiled curtain of clouds and sunset light. Heavenly scene!

*Digging in the archives today (April 12, 2016). I added to more groups. I didn't realize I didn't have hardly any on this one. Such a newbie! :p I love this photo. One of my first photos, and my first visit to Mt. Whitney and Alabama Hills when I started photography a few years ago. Can't wait to go back! :) One of my favorite places on Earth is Lone Pine, CA. John Wayne "The Duke" agreed. ;)

A vermillion sweeping vista of Grand Canyon National Park, golden red cliffs in the foreground, and the dark turquoise blue Colorado River winding through the canyon below complimenting the warm colors.

The iconic Half Dome monolith in Yosemite National Park in winter splendor.

If you haven't heard, they will not be able to use the name "Yosemite National Park" any longer to promote the park due to money and licensing issues with its previous vendor, who claims they own the name "Yosemite National Park." They have begun removing all YNP clothing and merchandise from the shelves as we speak. They will also be forced to rename the Ahwahnee Hotel and Wawona Hotel, among others. For those of us who have special memories of these historical places, it is a big blow.

I'm not sure how anyone can claim to own anything that belongs to all of the people, their history, and to nature. Yosemite National Park is a national treasure, not a trade mark. Hope things change for the Park Service soon.

A beautiful red tree glowing in the evening sunlight on the first day of September. A reminder that autumn is very near.

A landscape view of the Mt. Whitney and Alabama Hills area in Lone Pine, CA. A truck with a camper shell sits at the base of the rock pile to give some perspective on the size and scale. Camping is free in Alabama Hills, and is a favorite destination for many locals. There is also a paid campground just down the road with facilities for those who don't like to "rough it" so much.

If I ever had a favorite place on earth it would be Lone Pine, CA. Hard to have a favorite on this planet, with all its marvelous treasures of beauty and awesome grandeur. Mt. Whitney, Alabama Hills and the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains along Hwy. 395 stand out as my favorite home-away-from-home.

**Repost: 6-28-16 Happy Birthday to the love of my life!! :) (the man playing the guitar)

Exceptional skill displayed in motion as the musician plays for the trees and birds, who all stopped to listen, on a beautiful mountain afternoon. The musician is playing a well-seasoned Ovation guitar, which sounds fantastic outdoors. Make a joyful noise! :)

A classic view in Bryce Canyon at sunset is set afire in brilliant orange and gold colors. Shadows created from the last sun rays grace the temple area.

No visit to a U.S. National Park would be complete without a nod to Ansel Adams by trying to get a good monochrome shot. This monolithic giant stands watch over the Zion National Park gateway area.

A beautiful daisy backlit by sunlight in monochrome.

A brilliant urban California sunset, with a palm tree silhouette as the center focus.

Remembering California today and all of those affected by the devastating fires. Prayers!

A lone tree grows precariously at the tip of this golden rock outcropping in Zion National Park. A Heavenly view, and a beautiful place to grow tall.

The lack of water in California has not stopped Spring. Drought tolerant plants bloom with unbelievably brilliant color, despite no April showers.

This is Tuolumne Meadows just before the first big snow in late fall. The Tuolumne River is frozen over, while visitors in the distance come to the meadows to enjoy one last outing before winter sets in.

Tuolumne Meadows in Yosemite National Park is not open year round. It closes in late fall, and opens in late spring or early summer depending on the snowfall.

This year's generation of baby squirrels is now growing up, and this brave little one ventured out into the big, big world all by himself. He found my lemon guava plant, and got a big belly full. Later, he sunned himself as he spread out on the warm concrete and took a nap. I watched out for him since he was so small, and we have neighborhood cats. I have never seen one so young by himself. I sat on the ground, and he came up to me, licked my hand, ran up my arm and then promptly ran away. :) Very special. Momma squirrel saw him later that evening, she chased him back to the nest in the olive tree. Next time I see him I will not recognize him, they grow so fast. Very happy to capture the memory. :)

"The Eye in the Fiery Sky"

A red fiery sunset at Cedar Breaks National Monument in Utah. One of the most spectacular sunsets I have seen in my lifetime.

A towering red-golden hoodoo at Red Canyon at Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone! Happy shooting! :)

After a cold and rainy night, the dew and rain drops gathered on the garden in the early morning sunlight, creating a glistening, jeweled dream.

Beautiful and Heavenly blue granite peaks rising above the desert hills and weather rounded rocks. Soaking in the mid-morning sunshine. Inyo National Forest, Alabama Hills near Lone Pine, CA.

A day adventuring in the Mojave Desert can be quite brutal sometimes. In the heat, the sun beating down on you can burn right through you. And if you have a poor furry friend with you, their paws can burn easily in the hot sands. Luckily, the Mojave is not without its hidden oasis. :) In the desert, you better know where the water is.

This is my furry friend's favorite spot in the whole world. She can get in all the way and soak those hot, tired paws. Life-giving water for all in this area. You would never know it is only a small creek surrounded by desert sand and rock in all directions just outside the lining shrubs and trees. This is also the best tasting water (always filter!) you will ever drink, coming down straight from the ancient glaciers of Mt. Whitney.

A clearing evening storm hangs over the rim of the Grand Canyon, just before dark, creating deep shadows and textures in low-light monochrome.

A dramatic clearing storm over the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains and Alabama Hills creates an unusual sunset landscape. The silhouette of a raven, enjoying the evening, can be seen on the rock below the storm clouds.

A large hoodoo in Bryce Canyon National Park is kissed by the last rays of the sunset light.

A wooden bridge spanning the Walker River by Dardanelle, California. During the summer months this bridge is lined with trout fisherman aiming to pick up their trophy fish in the rocky waters below.

Kittens can entertain themselves for a long time! They can also entertain us for a lifetime. How precious are the young.

"When you walk through a storm, hold your head up high, and don't be afraid of the dark." Even though life's ups and downs seem like the waxing darkness, remember that the sun will rise again and light will fill the Earth with warmth when the night passes. The night does pass. Just remember, you'll never walk alone.

So, walk on....

The iconic Watchman in Zion National Park at sunset, glowing in regal crimson regalia. The red stone is lit by the setting golden sun.
