As a part of our stargazing sessions, we like to include a live-stack of a deep sky object using EAA for our guests.
While we are out on our back Observing Deck guiding visual observing sessions through 8-9 instruments, we have an imaging session going which we share with our visitors on our 75" TV screen when we come back inside.
This galaxy group consists of the main galaxy NGC 7331, a pure spiral located in the constellation of Pegasus and the four "fleas"; galaxies which appear in the same field of view but are much farther away and not associated with each other gravitationally. While NGC 7331 is about 40 million light years away, the fleas range in distance from 290-370 million light years away, which makes them appear much smaller. The "fleas".. galaxies NGC 7335, NGC 7336, NGC 7337 and NGC 7340 are shown to the left of the primary galaxy.
So what's up with the name? "In the 1980s, amateur astronomer Tom Lorenzin was observing in the mountains of North Carolina, at the Deerlick Gap Overlook. Because his view of NGC 7331 and its surrounding galaxies was so memorable, he christened them the Deer Lick Group."
This is 105 sixty-second images taken with our 26" f/4.8 Newtonian Reflector Telescope and ASI6200MC camera on 9/18/2023.
This stunningly beautiful galaxy group would be fun to get a lot more data on and to shoot in narrowband, but the purpose of this image is to give our guests a connection to the cosmos within the couple of hours they spend with us.

C&BL 104 traverses a section of their trackage very early in the morning to move a single car closer to its destination. On this day they were on duty and moving for no more than an hour and a half making this a very elusive railroad to catch working.
One of my favorite shots to take, with the historic French Lick Resort in the background. First time I've taken this shot near dark. I was trying out the hand-held twilight setting on my camera. Not too bad, but no replacement for a tripod.
The gazebo-like structure you see by the hotel is the main entrance. This Valley has changed so much in the past few years due to a casino that sits in the hotel yard. Mostly the changes have been good.
portrait: wild red fox
This "wild" fox is pretty tame. He comes to fossick for our food scraps and to play chasey with my little girl at the back door every evening on dusk. It is really special to watch the two of them frolicking around and we all look forward to his visit. He will even take food from the hand.
He is a fantastic subject and it is indeed a privilege to be able to collect a substantial stream of intimate portraits using a variety of standard 50mm focal length lenses and in beautiful, late autumn light.
Taken with a Canon EOS 5D Mark 3 DSLR coupled to the legendary vintage Carl Zeiss Planar T* 50mm/1.4 (Contax/Yashica mm mount) using a third party Leitax adapter. Hand-held with manual focus and settings. Shot fully-open using available light only @ ISO 100.

1st day was in pursuit of the road (more on that tomorrow) up to the Lick Observatory (out of San Jose, CA) and then on down the other side, eventually hitting Livermore.
Founded in 1888 this is the world's first permanently occupied mountaintop observatory, valued for its elevation (over 4,ooo ft) and isolation. Still a working site, although budget constraints and light pollution are both hitting hard, it is overseen by the University of California.
Even tho I had delayed my trip one day because it's only open on weekends, I would have been pissed if visiting the observatory was my main objective--turned out to be closed for a "Private Event" couldn't even access the parking lot !
Silly in the pool.

This handsome specimen continues to use my neighborhood's woods (where he was discovered earlier) as his hideout.
BTW: If you only knew how difficult it was to coax the subject into striking this pose... 😀 😎 😉
