Ephesus (Hittite: Apasa Greek: Έφεσος, Turkish: Efes) was an Ionian city in ancient Anatolia. The city was located in Ionia, where the Cayster River (Küçük Menderes) flows into the Aegean Sea. It was part of the Panionian League.
Today's archaeological site lies 3 kilometers south of the Selçuk district of İzmir Province, Turkey. The ruins of Ephesus are a favorite international and local tourist attraction, partly owing to their easy accessibility from Adnan Menderes Airport and via the port of Kuşadası.
Ephesus hosted one of the seven churches of Asia, addressed in the Book of Revelation of The Bible (2:1–7). It is also the site of a large gladiator graveyard.
Did you know there's a "secret room" in the basement of the Central Library where extra copies and little used books live? Thanks to compact shelving we can fit more into a smaller space. Hard to believe our vibrant new Children's Room used to be filled with storage!

The Library of Birmingham is a public library in Birmingham, England. It is situated on the west side of the city centre at Centenary Square, beside the Birmingham Rep (to which it connects, and with which it shares some facilities) and Baskerville House. Upon opening on 3 September 2013, it replaced Birmingham Central Library. The library, which is estimated to have cost £188.8 million, is viewed by the Birmingham City Council as a flagship project for the city's redevelopment. It has been described as the largest public library in the United Kingdom, the largest public cultural space in Europe, and the largest regional library in Europe.

Shot by my nephew. Yes, it's blurry. But my own shots wasn't better. Should have used a tripod in the low light...

Shields Library, UC Davis. I have wanted to draw a curvilinear perspective sketch for a while and this very flat roofed but interesting building, which I've never managed tio get a good angle of to sketch, was the perfect choice at lunchtime. I had a lot of fun with this one! I've made it look a bit like a baseball stadium.
Notes from the Rethinking the Library event at the P'unk Avenue in Philly.
The place was packed with passionate people, who sent their ideas flying around the room about the unique institution of the American Library.
Some threads:
The importance of diverse space within libraries (for quiet reading, spirited conversation, teen hanging out, etc.).
The challenge of working with 100 year old buildings from the Carnegie era when it comes to contemporary usage.
Librarians as guides and coaches.
Confidentiality and libraries.
The library as a uniquely open institution.
The varying needs in different neighborhoods.
Defining the comparative advantage of libraries in the age of Amazon and Google.
Libraries as places where stuff is created.
The library as an outpost.
How central are books in the mission of libraries.
Innovation idea: charter libraries.

This wonderful library is important for its rich, historical collections and for the remarkable, innovative building, which was designed by Henri Labrouste from 1842-50.
