Notes from the Rethinking the Library event at the P'unk Avenue in Philly.

The place was packed with passionate people, who sent their ideas flying around the room about the unique institution of the American Library.

Some threads:

The importance of diverse space within libraries (for quiet reading, spirited conversation, teen hanging out, etc.).

The challenge of working with 100 year old buildings from the Carnegie era when it comes to contemporary usage.

Librarians as guides and coaches.

Confidentiality and libraries.

The library as a uniquely open institution.

The varying needs in different neighborhoods.

Defining the comparative advantage of libraries in the age of Amazon and Google.

Libraries as places where stuff is created.

The library as an outpost.

How central are books in the mission of libraries.

Innovation idea: charter libraries.

Architect's plan from A Note on the New Building of the Withington Public Library, published by the City of Manchester, Public Libraries for the opening on Monday 30th May, 1927

This wonderful library is important for its rich, historical collections and for the remarkable, innovative building, which was designed by Henri Labrouste from 1842-50.

Have yet to think of a better title, but this is the Law Library at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.

P.S. This isn't HDR, it's all natural.

Taking a careful look at this two-year old photo I just discovered one of my Moleskine notebooks under the cd case. My version of "finding Waldo."

The "stacks" are the areas in the library in which books are stored. Here students come to find materials to reference for classes and for personal reading.

The Spanish Revival library is a landmark in Edgewood, a leafy historic railroad suburb of Pittsburgh. The library is one of the few non-Carnegie libraries in the area and may have originally been a private library and club.
