Here is an aisle of books that have not been cataloged in the online catalog yet. Notice how books from this photo are shelved end to end on the shelf. There is no growth in this collection from our rare room, so there is no need to keep extra space on the shelves for new things. Items are filed using an older AGS regional classification system based on geography. When they're returned, they're classified using LC and end up in a different arrangement.

An all-new interactive Digital Library from Vodafone and the British Library, giving the public free access to Shakespeare’s iconic classics through scanning QR codes on the spines of virtual books..

On the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, Vodafone and the British Library have made some of the earliest and rarest editions of Shakespeare’s plays available to all, allowing people to innovatively download the Bard’s most popular works from specially-designed wallpaper featuring virtual library bookshelves. The pop-up Digital Library will provide new access to free digital copies of the quartos by allowing people to simply scan the QR codes printed on the virtual books as the ‘Digital Library’ tours the UK from Edinburgh to Penzance from April 25th – 30th.

There's nothing like a guided tour to open one's eyes. I'd heard of the Portico Library, but didn't know where it was. But that's partly because the downstairs frontage in Mosley Street is a pub. The entrance is in Charlotte Street.

Opened in 1806, their web site says: "Leading exponent of the classical revival and architect of the earlier Liverpool Lyceum, Thomas Harrison was chosen to design the building. Builders David Bellhouse and Sons realised Harrison’s plans and delivered the resulting building for £6,881 5s. 3d."

Up a few flights of narrow stairs is this imposing reading room and exhibition space. Unfortunately the exhibition currently on prevented my showing the whole expanse of the interior. But see their web site for more details - and if you are local - visit and support it!

The newly installed library in our home office.

The old Birmingham Central Library in better times on 2nd March 2010.

It is currently being demolished, rather hurriedly, which may not be unrelated to the fact that the building's exemption from listing runs out on January 1st.

This sort of architecture isn't everyone's cup of tea but I strongly suspect that the demolition of the library will be regretted after the passage of a few decades. We treated our Victorian architecture with similar contempt until recently.

Celsus Library was erected in honor of Tiberius Julius Celsus Polemaenus by his son and was to store 12000 scrolls and to serve as a monumental tomb; Celsus had been consul and governor of Asia and was one of the earliest men of purely Greek origin to become a consul in Rome ...
