This moment happened at the end of a walk put on by the leukemia and lymphoma society. We walked with colored lanterns. Red represents supporters, white is for survivors and yellow is carried by friends and family of those who have passed. It was a beautiful moment to see thousands of people coming together to raise money to help find a cure.

This microscopy image provided by Dr. Carl June, shows immune system T-cells, center, binding to beads which cause the cells to divide. The beads, depicted in yellow, are later removed, leaving pure T-cells which are then ready for infusion to the cancer patients. Scientists are reporting the first clear success with gene therapy to treat leukemia, using the patients' own blood cells to hunt down and wipe out their cancer. They've only done it in three patients so far, but the results were striking: two appear cancer-free up to a year after treatment, and the third had a partial response. Scientists are already preparing to try the approach in other kinds of cancer.

Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's annual "Light the Night". It's pretty incredible to look at, but they REALLY need to lose their sound system.

"Is there anyone in the room who doesn't have a Mercedes?" comedian Jay Leno queried on Saturday, before helping raffle off a few, including a CLS550 model valued at more than $68,000.

The occasion? The 21st annual ball of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the largest non-political fundraiser in the Washington metropolitan area.

The setting? The Walter E. Washington Convention Center, transformed for the night into a glitzy, jazzy space for 2,500 guests in keeping with the ball's Roaring '20s theme.

"This is the event that sets the standard," said benefactor Bennett Zier, CEO of Red Zebra.

The crowd arrived to the sight of white-garbed flappers high-heeling it to Charlestons and other beats familiar to an earlier generation of bright young things. Upstairs, a slightly older but no less bright assemblage of local business community leading lights, including ball co-chairmen Fernando Murias of PricewaterhouseCoopers and Joe Kelley of Eli Lilly, circulated among the hundreds of silent auction items that included travel getaways, meals donated by top restaurant chefs and plenty of VIP tickets to local sporting and entertainment events. There was even a miniature red, pedal-operated Mercedes for the toddler who simply must get to the end of the driveway in style.

The cause of all the hoopla, of course, was the organization's efforts to fight blood cancer, the No. 1 disease killer of young Americans. At the chairmen's pre-dinner cocktail reception, the talk was mostly about the society's fundraising accomplishments, all the more noteworthy this past year because the recent economic downturn has left many longtime funders strapped.

Still, the event raised $3.3 million, so there was a lot to celebrate.

Partygoers talked their way through beef tenderloin, crab medallion and an art deco dessert "bombe." Vice President Dick Cheney sent his regards via video, helping to honor Sen. Craig Thomas, who died last year after a short bout with acute myeloid leukemia. Mr. Thomas' widow, Susan, was in attendance.

Mr. Leno provided comic relief with extensive riffs on Michael Jackson, cats, elderly relatives, American eating habits and taxes. ("If you think health care is expensive now, wait 'til it's free.) By the time he drew out the final raffle ticket for a pricey Mercedes, '20s-era sensibilities gave way to 21st century realities. Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes took the stage, dinner jackets disappeared, black ties loosened, and ball-goers who stayed past the end-of-auction flurry partied as if the night were young.

A bag full of blood stem cells for a Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (bone marrow).

The donation is anonymous,

I do not know who's gonna get it - the recipient does not know who I am.

Maybe I will be informed if everything went okay... we will have to wait for X-mas...

Two weeks after my donation of stem cells (bone marrow) I am still doing very well

see details here (preparations) and here (donation).

Today I received a little 'thank-you'-box from the centre that coordinates all the bone marrow donations for western Germany (http://www.wsze.de") and an additionall address that I did not know yet.

The DKMS 4th Annual Gala: Linked Against Leukemia, held on April 29 at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City, raised over $1.7M to support the fight against leukemia and other blood related cancers. The money raised jointly by Coty Inc., a leading global beauty company, and DKMS, the world's largest bone marrow donor center, will help register over 20,000 bone marrow donors and work to save lives worldwide.

The highlight of the night is the “Moment of the Match”, when a leukemia patient and donor meet for the first time. This year’s moment united three-year-old leukemia survivors Keane and Ethan Denke and their parents with Monika Rasche, the twins’ life-saving donor match, and left few dry eyes in the room. In 2007, at just four months old, identical twins Keane and Ethan Denke were diagnosed with Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH). Their parents, Xander and Carrie Denke, immediately began searching for one bone marrow donor to save both of their sons, and found support through the Coty-DKMS Linked Against Leukemia partnership.

“When I met Xander and Carrie Denke during the twins’ donor search, I was blown away by their determination and strong will,” said Bernd Beetz, Coty CEO. “Three years later, Coty is honored to stand beside two very healthy boys and their proud parents as they meet the woman who saved Keane and Ethan. This is the reason we are committed to DKMS, saving lives one donor at a time.”

During the Gala, Coty CEO Bernd Beetz and Oscar winning actress and Coty partner, Halle Berry, presented Island Def Jam Chairman, Antonio ‘LA’ Reid with the “DKMS Linked Against Leukemia Award” in honor of his tireless work in fighting cancer.

"I'm thrilled with my partnership with Coty, a company that has such a great sense of social responsibility, in supporting DKMS in the fight against leukemia,” said Halle Berry.

Access Hollywood’s Shaun Robinson emceed the black tie event, which included a special performance by legendary music icon, Jon Bon Jovi. Vera Wang, Carmindy, Solange Knowles, Kylie Minogue, Melissa Etheridge, Estelle, Eva Mendes, Anja Rubik and Coco Rocha also attended.

In honor of the Coty-DKMS Linked Against Leukemia partnership and the DKMS 4th Annual Gala: Linked Against Leukemia, the Empire State Building illuminated the iconic New York City landmark in red and white lights on Thursday, April 29.

Coty joined DKMS in October 2006 in the fight against leukemia, one of the leading causes of cancer deaths worldwide. Leukemia also touched Coty Inc. in a very personal manner in 1991, when the wife of longtime Coty Inc. Chairman Peter Harf succumbed to the disease. Each year, more than 140,000 people are diagnosed with a blood cancer, including leukemia, which is the most common cancer among children and adolescents.

All proceeds from the DKMS 4th Annual Gala will go directly to enrolling life-saving bone marrow donors, and furthering advancements in cancer treatment and care.

“We are moved by the support of all our long term supporters, especially our legacy corporate sponsor, Coty,” said Katharina Harf, Executive Vice President, DKMS Americas. “The money raised will further the DKMS mission to save lives around the world.”

ABOUT THE COTY-DKMS LINKED AGAINST LEUKEMIA PARTNERSHIP

In October 2006, Coty Inc., a global beauty leader, joined DKMS, the world’s largest non-profit bone marrow donor center, in the fight against leukemia by establishing the Coty-DKMS Linked Against Leukemia partnership. Led by CEO Bernd Beetz, Coty has leveraged its strong celebrity partnerships to raise awareness of the disease and help recruit thousands of donors around the world. Additionally, Coty has assisted DKMS in establishing independent DKMS organizations in the Americas and Poland with plans to open offices elsewhere in Europe in the coming years. Leukemia, one of the leading causes of cancer deaths worldwide, personally affected the Coty family when the wife of longtime Coty Chairman Peter Harf succumbed to the disease in 1991.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Man & Woman of the Year (MWOY) campaign is a fundraising competition in communities across the U.S. in which participants vie for the title of Man, Woman or Students of the Year. They raise funds for blood cancer research in honor of local children who are blood cancer survivors, the Boy & Girl of the Year. The titles are awarded to the men, women and students in each community who raise the most funds during the ten-week campaign; the top local fundraisers in the country also win the national titles.

I used Pocket Wizards to actuate the strobes. Both strobes were in the back of the room to prevent light washout from pointing the camera directly at the strobes.
