51/52 Two

Two legs

Two arms

Two flowers in my pocket

The first of two images I took on Friday. I was still a week behind so I went into the woods to take my final two images for the 52 weeks project a few days ago. Number 52 will follow soon :).

Word: Quiet

I love peace a quiet, its actually one of my favourite things. If theres too much noise such as music or a tv on in the background and I'm frustrated, I'll turn it off and I will instantly feel calmer.

Week 3. Morning.

I'm definitely not a morning person. I'm SO not a morning person that this picture was taken at 4 p.m. Which was just an hour after I woke up. No sun here in winter anyway.

Something about this picture seems off to me, but I can't quite place it. Feedback would be much appreciated.

52/52 I will follow

I did it! One year of weekly self-portraits! I am very proud that I kept going, even through the stressful and not very inspiring weeks. And of course I had to create another image with butterflies :).

Thank you very much for following along everyone, your likes and comments mean a lot!!

Let’s Get Creative 2015 — Week 8: soft

#LGC2015 #Letsgetcreative2015 #week8 #soft

There is a softness in the focus, in the looks and in the speech. She’s a woman. She is strong and sturdy, unwavering against the forces that come against. But she’s also soft and tender. One doesn’t exist without the other, she is not just one thing. She will never be just one thing.

Happy International Women’s Day!

I take this day, and this photograph, to celebrate the female visual artists that came before me and who allowed me to be who I am today.

To all the painters who dared to be in the game with the boys, even though it was barely allowed (I’m looking at you, Artemisia Gentileschi) or to joined the team when they were starting to be appreciated — Berthe Morisot, Mary Cassatt, all the impressionist women who created art that was equal to the men’s, but who, to this day, are still lesser known names. To groundbreaking creatures like Frida Kahlo, my Frida, the one I look to when I need to go back to being fierce, to being bigger than myself.

To the filmmakers. To Sofia Coppola, the first filmmaker who I felt captured my vision, and Jane Campion, who came before her but who I only found later, much later, in her subtleties. To my love, my Melanie. And speaking of her, to writers too.

To the writers, both of novels and of fantastic, wonderful television and cinema. You make my world. It’s to television that I turn to when everything else seems dark. And you make me believe that we can make a difference. I’ll never be able to thank you enough.

To the photographers. To Cindy and Francesca, to Annie and her rides with the cool peeps and her style, unmatchable. To the ones who introduced me to self-portraiture (Lisa/Elle Moss, this is for you and for your beautiful body of work), and to the ones who inspired me to be bolder and brighter. To my friends, especially to the ones who are fighting to break through in a business that when it is such — not just an amateur art, not just a fling, not just a hobby — is still a man’s world. On my first critique in photography school, my teacher — a man I thoroughly admire and who taught me incredible things about my craft — told me I photographed ‘like a girl’. He didn’t mean it as a compliment, but I took it as such. To this day, I still photograph like a girl, like a woman, like the person that I am. I am not ashamed that my sensitivities make me see things in a different way. I’m not worse for my different sense of aesthetics. I am not better for being a woman — I am an equal, and that’s what I’ll always be. Until my work sets me apart — and that has nothing to do with my gender.

Thank you, to all the women who came before. I hope I can live up to your standards and make a difference for the ones that are yet to come.

49/52 Me

Simple portrait with only natural light and hardly any editing. As Paul Jarvis puts it: "We like to complicate things." So this was a great reminder to simplify.

Week 11. Growth.

Ironically, I look even younger here than I usually do. But let my serious expression make up for that.

Week 10. Senses.

L'esprit de l'escalier of the day: should've worn clothes. Had to do a close crop and it's still too sensual.

If this picture seems a bit too similar to the previous one, it's because they were taken a couple of minutes apart. But still counts as another week because I'm catching up :)

10/52 - Growing Home

Week 10: Growth

Moving away from home has got to the up there with the hardest, most proudest times of my life.

Reaching out and growing up has helped me to understand who I am and why I am on this floating earth.

Week 4. Music.

This was originally inspired by Placebo's "Pure Morning", by this extract -

A friend in need's a friend indeed,

A friend with weed is better,

A friend with breasts and all the rest,

A friend who's dressed in leather;

- which is supposed to be playful, but I was moody because my remote control's battery was barely working, so instead I went with another favourite from Placebo, "Scared of Girls", which is a song about self-loathing, according to Brian Molko.

And oops, I said it would be black and white, but it's not. I decided to take advantage of the day between bleaching and dyeing my hair, and took a picture with platinum hair instead of pink. I like it in colour more.

25/52 - Double

I started off with water and then earth got involved in the form of flowers. A very grainy first attempt for #LetsGetCreative2015

48/52 Bleeding

It's getting harder and harder to come up with images that I feel are good enough for this project. The end is so close and it's sad and beautiful at the same time, like this bleeding heart.

This week's lets get creative word was spirit and a image like this immediately came to mind. Because when you're dreaming it's like your spirit is out of your body going on adventures and I've always been fascinated by that concept. So I was like Yes! this should work. But I'll admit, I picked the wrong time of the day to take pictures (as usual). So the place where I originally wanted to take this picture was in full sunlight. Instead I decided to take this picture on the almost dry creek bed (emphasis on Almost). Man I don't know how many bug bites I got trying to take this picture. But in the end I suppose it turned out okay.

13/52 Pride

There is no smell without breath, sound becomes muffled, a murky taste lingers as fading light steals away vision, cold encompasses.
